Second, the shows encourage a `rowdy outrageousness' which intensifies animosities between populations (e.g. between gays and bisexuality). Finally, the shows trigger battles over public space. Drawing new connections among disability studies, queer theory, and bioethics, I argue that Life responded to American disability rights activism and the AIDS epidemic of the early 1990s by depicting sex education as disability activism. By portraying fulfilling sexual relationships for its disabled protagonists, Life challenged heteronormative and ableist underpinnings of marriage, sexuality, reproduction, and sex education and imagined transgressive queer/disabled alliances that often surpassed those of activists of its cultural moment. Forty-one transgender individuals participated in semistructured interviews. Results suggested media were instrumental for sensemaking. Participants used media to make sense of feelings, sexual relations, community, and transition options. Participants also used media to meet nonmediated goals or to initiate interpersonal negotiations. Focusing on the media response to Brown's violence, we examine how many accounts of gender-based violence rely on temporal imperatives (i.e. ‘give it time’, ‘move forward’) that are intended to bolster women's agency. Through an analysis of the media response (especially Diane Sawyer and Oprah Winfrey), we argue that the otherwise sympathetic discourse around the incident deploys self-improvement imperatives underwritten by victim blaming. We read Rihanna's response to the violence done to her through the controlling images of black women including the ‘strongblackwoman’ and the ‘island woman’. We challenge the responsibilization of victims of violence and we imagine a solidarity that enables victims of violence to do more than simply imagine a future where one ‘moves on’ and ‘gets past’.
