The drawbacks include disrupted oxygen delivery to the brain, respiratory alkalosis, overuse of accessory breathing muscles and weakening of the diaphragm. Pavlovian conditioning can initiate these breathing reactions, linking contextual cues or emotional aspects of a traumatic experience with associated breathing changes. The process of generalization further broadens the pool of emotional and situational triggers, and emotional states such as grief, suppressed anger, frustration and anxiety may maintain dysfunctional
