simulation-model for the steel and cement industries. The model covers the full modelling chain from economic activity, to materials consumption, trade, technology choice, production capacity, energy use and CO 2 emissions. Without climate policy, the future projections based on the SSP2 scenario show a rapid increase in the consumption of steel and cement over the next few decades, after which demand levels are projected to stabilize. This implies that over the scenario period, CO 2 emissions are projected to peak in the next decades followed by a decrease below 2010 levels in 2050. There is considerable scope to mitigate CO 2 emissions from steel and cement industries, leading to resp. 80–90% and 40–80% reduction below 2010 in 2050 for a high carbon tax of 100 $/tCO 2 + 4%pa C." } ], "abstractNote": "Several studies were conducted in cities of Liaoning Province, one of the areas of China with heavy concentrations of industry, to investigate the effects of life-style factors and environmental pollutants on lung cancer causation. A case-control study involving 1249 lung cancer patients and 1345 population-based controls was conducted in 1985–1988 in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning. Cigarette smoking was found to be the principal cause of lung cancer in this population, accounting for 55% of the disease in males and 37% in females. There was also a significant increase in lung cancer risk associated with an overall index of indoor air pollution due to coal-burning emission. The population attributable risk (PAR) for indoor air pollution was 13% for males and 17% for females. Risks were significantly increased for workers in the non-ferrous smelter (odds ratio (OR) = 2.6, 95% CI, 1.3–5.1), chemical and drug manufacturing (OR = 3.0, 95% CI, 1.0–8.0), and the glass and pottery industry (OR = 1.6, 95% CI, 1.0–2.5). Studies in the Anshan Iron-Steel Complex showed a significant excess of lung cancer for workers exposed to a variety of dusts. A standardized proportional mortality ratio (SPMR) study of 8887 deaths during 1980–1989 among male workers of the complex indicated a 37% excess risk of lung cancer compared to residents of the city. A nested case-control study was then conducted in that complex. A total of 610 cases of lung cancer diagnosed during 1987–1993 and 959 randomly selected controls from 196993 active and retired employees of the complex were interviewed. Historical monitoring records for dust and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) were collected from 1956–1992 to calculate cumulative exposure for each person. Results suggested that risks were increased for all occupations in which there was exposure to dusts, with the highest risks seen among coke oven workers (OR = 3.5, 95% CI, 2.0–6.4) and fire-resistant brick makers (OR = 2.9, 95% CI, 1.9–4.4). Significant dose-response patterns between cumulative total dust, cumulative total B(a)P and lung cancer risk were observed. Few studies have investigated cardiovascular effects of air pollutants emitted from steel plants. OBJECTIVE: We examined the influence of outdoor air pollution in the vicinity of a steel plant on cardiovascular physiology in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. METHODS: Sixty-one healthy, non-smoking subjects (females/males=33/28, median age 22 years) spent 5 consecutive 8-hour days outdoors in a residential area neighbouring a steel plant, or on a college campus approximately 5 kilometres away from the plant, and then crossed over to the other site with a 9-day washout. Mid day, subjects underwent daily 30-minute moderate intensity exercise. Blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate were determined daily and post exercise at both sites. Flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) was determined at the site near the plant. Air pollution was monitored at both sites. Mixed-effects regressions were run for statistical associations, adjusting for weather variables. RESULTS: Concentrations of ultrafine particles, sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) were 50-100% higher at the site near the plant than at the college site, with minor differences in temperature, humidity, and concentrations of particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in size (PM2.5) and ozone (O3). Resting pulse rate [mean (95% confidence interval)] was moderately higher near the steel plant [+1.53 bpm (0.31, 2.78)] than at the college site, male subjects having the highest pulse rate elevation [+2.77 bpm (0.78, 4.76)]. Resting systolic and diastolic BP and pulse pressure, and post-exercise BP and pulse rate were not significantly different between two sites. Interquartile range concentrations of SO2 (2.9 ppb), NO2 (5.0 ppb) and CO (0.2 ppm) were associated with increased pulse rate [0.19 bpm (-0.00, 0.38), 0.86 bpm (0.03, 1.68), and 0.11 bpm (0.00, 0.22), respectively], ultrafine particles (10,256 count/cm(3)) associated with increased pulse pressure [0.85 mmHg (0.23, 1.48)], and NO2 and CO inversely associated with FMD [-0.14% (-0.31, 0.02), -0.02% (-0.03, -0.00), respectively]. SO2 during exercise was associated with increased pulse rate [0.26 bpm (0.01, 0.51)]. This time period included the closure and reopening of the local steel mill, the primary source of PM10. An association between elevated PM10 levels and hospital admissions for pneumonia, pleurisy, bronchitis, and asthma was observed. During months when 24-hour PM10 levels exceeded 150 micrograms/m3, average admissions for children nearly tripled; in adults, the increase in admissions was 44 per cent. During months with mean PM10 levels greater than or equal to 50 micrograms/m3 average admissions for children and adults increased by 89 and 47 per cent, respectively. During the winter months when the steel mill was open, PM10 levels were nearly double the levels experienced during the winter months when the mill was closed. This occurred even though relatively stagnant air was experienced during the winter the mill was closed. Children's admissions were two to three times higher during the winters when the mill was open compared to when it was closed. Regression analysis also revealed that PM10 levels were strongly correlated with hospital admissions.
