A high-level survey of the editorial practices of Robert Ross--who edited the first authorized edition of Wilde's works--by Ahmadgoli (whose 2005 PhD dissertation focused on the Ross edition) and Small (the general editor of the Oxford UP edition of The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde). The essay explains the conditions under which Ross produced his edition, inlcuding the expectation of producing uniform and 'clean,' readable texts. It then examines Ross' differing editing strategies in relation to uncollected periodical texts, published books, and unpublished manuscripts. Although only an overview of the editorial issues of the Ross edition, the essay is a helpful introduction to the challenges of both editing Wilde's writings and using Ross's edition as an 'authoritative' source.
