"abstractNote": "How are authors of journal articles paying Open Access (OA) fees or Article Processing Costs (APCs)? What is the administrative burden for authors? And do their research organisations have an accurate overview of all these payments?\n\nThis report aims to share a better understanding of authors’ perspectives on APC payments. This will support the development of an optimal communication and administrative strategy in order to encourage the use of existing APC funding mechanisms by authors. \n\nTo address these research questions, Knowledge Exchange has carried out a study among authors of six research organisations. In total, 1,069 researchers participated in online surveys about their articles published either in OA journals or in subscription journals that offer the option to publish individual articles on OA for an additional fee (so-called hybrid journals).\n\nThe aim of this abridged report is to provide a bird’s eye view of the study outcomes. The focus is on the results of a survey of authors in three large, multidisciplinary universities with rather contrasting OA policies:\n\n\n\tUniversity of Helsinki\n\tUniversity of Göttingen\n\tUniversity of Glasgow.\n\n\nFor brevity’s sake, the results of the other three participating research organisations (Roskilde University, Technical University Eindhoven and Inria – the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation) will only be mentioned if relevant.\n\nThe complete results of the study – including references to relevant literature – are published in a separate report: LINK TO BE ADDED",

\npublications and cost data related to publications,
\nwhich is the focus of this report, was a direct response
\nto the suggestions made in the first Knowledge
\nExchange workshop on OA monitoring held in Utrecht in May 2015, which concluded
\nthat Open Access definitions, workflows and collaboration
\nshould be closely linked in order to keep monitoring
\nsimple and open, allowing best practice to emerge and
\nbe built upon.
\nHence this second workshop was designed to create
\nsome tangible recommendations by gathering experts
\nfrom all the KE countries and beyond to discuss and
\ncompare results and ongoing experimentation in the
\nfields of:
\n`` Monitoring OA publications
\n`` Monitoring cost data for OA publications
\nThe Copenhagen workshop successfully addressed
\nboth topics in a number of ways. Keynote presentations
\ngave useful and general overviews of ongoing initiatives
\nand results while presentations from six different countries
\noffered unique insights into the most prominent activities
\nregarding monitoring of OA publications and related
\ncost data. Finally, and most importantly, two breakout
\nsessions involved all 57 participants in discussions about
\nmonitoring, leading to 48 concrete recommendations.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents the findings from a survey study of UK academics and their publishing behaviour. The aim of this study is to investigate academics’ attitudes towards and practice of open access (OA) publishing. The results are based on a survey study of academics at 12 Russell Group universities, and reflect responses from over 1800 researchers. This study found that whilst most academics support the principle of making knowledge freely available to everyone, the use of OA publishing among UK academics was still limited despite relevant established OA policies. The results suggest that there were differences in the extent of OA practice between different universities, academic disciplines, age and seniorities. Academics’ use in OA publishing was also related to their awareness of OA policy and OA repositories, their attitudes towards the importance of OA publishing and their belief in OA citation advantage. The implications of these findings are relevant to the development of strategies for the implementation of OA policies.",

"abstractNote": "This study estimates the development of hybrid open access (OA), i.e. articles published openly on the web within subscription-access journals. Included in the study are the five largest publishers of scholarly journals; Elsevier, Springer, Wiley-Blackwell, Taylor & Francis, and Sage. Since no central indexing or standardized metadata exists for identifying hybrid OA an explorative bottom-up methodological approach was developed. The individual search and filtering features of each publisher website and a-priori availability of data were leveraged to the extent possible. The results indicate a strong sustained growth in the volume of articles published as hybrid OA during 2007 (666 articles) to 2013 (13 994 articles). The share of hybrid articles was at 3.8% of total published articles for the period of 2011–2013 for journals with at least one identified hybrid OA article. Journals within the Scopus discipline categorization of Health and Life Sciences, in particular the field of Medicine, were found to be among the most frequent publishers of hybrid OA content. The study surfaces the many methodological challenges involved in obtaining metrics regarding hybrid OA, a growing business for journal publishers as science policy pressures for reduced access barriers to research publications.",
