"abstractNote": "The topic of scientific revolutions has become philosophicallyimportant, especially since Thomas Kuhn's account in The Structureof Scientific Revolutions (1962, 1970). Kuhn's death in 1996 andthe fiftieth anniversary of Structure in 2012 have renewedattention to the issues raised by his work. It is controversialwhether or not there have been any revolutions in the strictly Kuhniansense. It is also controversial what exactly a Kuhnian revolution is,or would be. Although talk of revolution is often exaggerated, mostanalysts agree that there have been transformative scientificdevelopments of various kinds, whether Kuhnian or not. However, thereis considerable disagreement about their import. The existence andnature of scientific revolutions is a topic that raises a host offundamental questions about the sciences and how to interpret them, atopic that intersects most of the major issues that have concernedphilosophers of science and their colleagues in neighboring sciencestudies disciplines such as history and sociology of science. Even ifthe so-called Scientific Revolution from Copernicus to Newton fits theattractive, Enlightenment picture of the transition from feudalism tomodernity (a claim that is also contested), the putative revolutionsin mature sciences (e.g., relativity and quantum mechanics) challengethis Enlightenment vision of rational, objective sciences andtechnologies that lead society along the path of progress toward thetruth about the world. Although many philosophers and philosophicallyor historically reflective scientists had commented on the dramaticdevelopments in twentieth-century physics, it was not until Kuhn thatsuch developments seemed so epistemologically and ontologicallydamaging as to seriously challenge traditional conceptions ofscience—and hence our understanding of knowledge acquisition ingeneral. Why it was Kuhn's work and its timing that made the majordifference are themselves interesting questions for investigation, given that others (e.g., Wittgenstein, Fleck, Polanyi, Toulmin, andHanson) had already broached important “Kuhnian”themes., Was there a Scientific Revolution that replaced pre-scientificthinking about nature and society and thus marked the transition tomodernity? Which later developments, if any, are truly revolutionary? Are attributions of revolution usually a sign of insufficienthistoriographical understanding? In any case, how are such episodes tobe explained historically and epistemologically? Are theycontingent—historical accidents—and thus perhaps avoidableor are they somehow necessary—and, if so, why? Is there anoverall pattern of scientific development? If so, is it basically oneof creative displacement, as Kuhn originally claimed? Do allrevolutions have the same structure and function, or are there diverseforms of rupture, discontinuity, or rapid change in science? Do theyrepresent great leaps forward or, on the contrary, does theirexistence undercut the claim that science progresses? Does theexistence of revolutions in mature sciences support a postmodern or“post-critical” (Polanyi) rather than a modern,neo-Enlightenment conception of science in relation to other humanenterprises? Does their existence support a strongly constructionistversus a realist conception of scientific knowledge claims? Arerevolutions an exercise in rationality or are they so excessive as tobe labeled irrational? Do they invite epistemological relativism? Whatare the implications of revolution for science policy? This entrywill survey some but not all of these issues.",

In Rethinking Expertise, Harry Collins and Robert Evans offer a radical new perspective on the role of expertise in the practice of science and the public evaluation of technology. Collins and Evans present a Periodic Table of Expertises based on the idea of tacit knowledge?knowledge that we have but cannot explain. They then look at how some expertises are used to judge others, how laypeople judge between experts, and how credentials are used to evaluate them. Throughout, Collins and Evans ask an important question: how can the public make use of science and.",

"abstractNote": "Science studies has shown us why science and technology cannot always solve technical problems in the public domain. In particular, the speed of political decision-making is faster than the speed of scientific consensus formation. A predominant motif over recent years has been the need to extend the domain of technical decision-making beyond the technically qualified élite, so as to enhance political legitimacy. We argue, however, that the 'Problem of Legitimacy' has been replaced by the 'Problem of Extension' - that is, by a tendency to dissolve the boundary between experts and the public so that there are no longer any grounds for limiting the indefinite extension of technical decision-making rights. We argue that a Third Wave of Science Studies - Studies of Expertise and Experience (SEE) - is needed to solve the Problem of Extension. SEE will include a normative theory of expertise, and will disentangle expertise from political rights in technical decision-making. The theory builds categories of expertise, starting with the key distinction between interactive expertise and contributory expertise. A new categorization of types of science is also needed. We illustrate the potential of the approach by re-examining existing case studies, including Brian Wynne's study of Cumbrian sheep farmers. Sometimes the new theory argues for more public involvement, sometimes for less. An Appendix describes existing contributions to the problem of technical decision-making in the public domain.",

"abstractNote": "This edited collection is a major contribution to the current development of a ‘material turn’ in the social sciences and humanities.  It does so by exploring new understandings of how power is made up and exercised by examining the role of material infrastructures in the organization of state power and the role of material cultural practices in the organization of colonial forms of governance.   A diverse range of historical examples is drawn on in illustrating these concerns – from the role of territorial engineering projects in seventeenth-century France through the development of the postal system in nineteenth-century Britain to the relations between the state and road-building in contemporary Peru, for example.  The colonial contexts examined are similarly varied, ranging from the role of photographic practices in the constitution of colonial power in India and the measurement of the bodies of the colonized in French colonial practices to the part played by the relations between museums and expeditions in the organization of Australian forms of colonial rule.  These specific concerns are connected to major critical re-examination of the limits of the earlier formulations of cultural materialism and the logic of the ‘cultural turn’. The collection brings together a group of key international scholars whose work has played a leading role in debates in and across the fields of history, visual culture studies, anthropology, geography, cultural studies, museum studies, and literary studies.",

"abstractNote": "Vanishing into Things explores the concept of knowledge in Chinese thought over two millennia, from Confucius to Wang Yangming (ca. 1500 CE), and compares the different philosophical imperatives that have driven Chinese and Western thought. Challenging the hyperspecialized epistemology of modern philosophy in the West, Barry Allen urges his readers toward an ethical appreciation of why knowledge is worth pursuing. Western philosophers have long maintained that true knowledge is the best knowledge. Chinese thinkers, by contrast, have emphasized not the essence of knowing but the purpose. Ideas of truth play no part in their understanding of what the best knowledge is: knowledge is not deduced from principles or reducible to a theory. Rather, in Chinese tradition knowledge is expressed through wu wei, literally \"not doing\"--A response to circumstances that is at once effortless and effective. This type of knowledge perceives the evolution of circumstances from an early point, when its course can still be changed, provided one has the wisdom to grasp the opportunity. Allen guides readers through the major Confucian and Daoist thinkers including Kongzi, Mengzi, Xunzi, Laozi, and Zhuangzi, examining their influence on medieval Neoconfucianism and Chan (Zen) Buddhism, as well as the theme of knowledge in China's art of war literature. The sophisticated and consistent concept of knowledge elucidated here will be of relevance to contemporary Western and Eastern philosophers alike. -- from dust jacket.",
