"abstractNote": "This is the first annotated checklist of the Hydraenidae of Croatia. It is based on reliable literature data and the examination of unpublished specimens identified by the authors. A total of 65 species is confirmed to occur in Croatia: 26 species of\n Hydraena Kugelann, 1794, nine species of\n Limnebius\n Leach, 1825, and 30 species of\n Ochthebius\n Leach, 1815. With regard to the biogeographical regions of Croatia, 47 of these species are found in the Mediterranean Region, 28 in the Continental and 14 in the Alpine Region. Four species are recorded from Croatia for the first time:\n Hydraena\n (s. str.)\n assimilis\n Rey, 1885,\n Limnebius\n (s. str.)\n aluta\n Bedel, 1881,\n Ochthebius\n (\n Asiobates\n )\n flavipes\n Dalla Torre, 1877, and\n O.\n (s. str.)\n pedicularius\n Kuwert, 1887. Four species are classified as “unconfirmed or doubtfully recorded” from Croatia.\n Ochthebius\n (\n Asiobates\n )\n bicolon\n Germar, 1824 is deleted from the Croatian checklist. An additional 29 species that potentially could occur in this country are discussed. Only one hydraenid species,\n Hydraena angustata\n Sturm, 1938, is currently regarded as endemic to Croatia, but it is assumed to be more wide-spread. A total of 14 Croatian hydraenid species is regarded as endemic or subendemic to the Balkan Region. Lectotypes are designated for\n Hydraena\n (s. str.)\n croatica\n Kuwert, 1888 and\n Ochthebius\n (\n Aulacochthebius\n )\n narentinus\n Reitter, 1885. A photograph of the dorsal habitus of\n H\n . (s. str.)\n croatica\n is published for the first time. The history of the exploration of the Hydraenidae of Croatia is outlined. Compared to other South European countries like Spain or Italy, the knowledge of the hydraenid fauna of Croatia is still remarkably poor, and very few Croatian hydraenid specimens have been barcoded so far; only one specimen was found databased in BOLD and GeneBank (accessed June 2025).\n \n , \n \n Ovaj rad predstavlja prvi popis vrsta porodice Hydraenidae Hrvatske. Popis je temeljen na relevantnim literaturnim podacima kao i na do sada neobjavljenim nalazima i determinaciji vrsta od strane autora. Ukupno je zabilježeno 65 vrsta raspoređenih unutar tri roda: rod\n Hydraena\n Kugelann, 1794 s 26 vrsta, rod\n Limnebius\n Leach, 1825 s devet vrsta te rod\n Ochthebius\n Leach, 1815 s 30 vrsta. Na osnovu biogeografske analize 47 vrsta je ustanovljeno u mediteranskoj regiji, 28 u kontinentalnoj, a 14 u alpinskoj regiji. Četiri vrste su novi nalazi za hrvatsku faunu:\n Hydraena\n (s. str.)\n assimilis\n Rey, 1885,\n Limnebius\n (s. str.)\n aluta\n Bedel, 1881,\n Ochthebius\n (\n Asiobates\n )\n flavipes\n Dalla Torre, 1877 i\n O.\n (s. str.)\n pedicularius\n Kuwert, 1887, dok su za četiri vrste nalazi klasificirani kao neprovjereni ili upitni. Vrsta\n Ochthebius\n (\n Asiobates\n )\n bicolon\n Germar, 1824 je ovim istraživanjem uklonjena s popisa hrvatske faune, a za 29 vrsta pretpostavljena je prisutnost na području Hrvatske. Za sada je samo jedna vrsta,\n Hydraena angustata\n Sturm, 1938, klasificirana kao endemska za Hrvatsku, ali s pretpostavkom da joj je areal distribucije i veći. Važno je naglasiti da je 14 vrsta ustanovljenih ovim istraživanjem endemskog ili subendemskog rasprostranjenja za područje Balkana. U sklopu ovog rada određeni su lektotipovi za vrste\n Hydraena\n (s. str.)\n croatica\n Kuwert, 1888 i\n Ochthebius\n (\n Aulacochthebius\n )\n narentinus\n Reitter, 1885 te je prvi puta objavljena fotografija dorzalne strane habitusa vrste\n H\n . (s. str.)\n croatica\n . Također, ukratko je predstavljena povijest istraživanja porodice Hydraenidae na području Hrvatske. Zaključno, u usporedbi s drugim južnoeuropskim zemljama poput Španjolske ili Italije, znanje o fauni porodice Hydraenidae u Hrvatskoj je još uvijek nedostatno. Tako je primjerice do sada je svega nekoliko primjeraka s područja Hrvatske DNA barkodirano sa svega jednom jedinkom pronađenom u bazi podataka BOLD i GeneBank (pristupljeno lipanj 2025).",

"abstractNote": "As a follow-up to the investigation of the water beetle fauna of the upper course of the Neretva River in 2022, during the second »Neretva Science Week« in June 2023, additional tributaries were sampled and the presence of the endemic Bosnian species Hydraena bosnica has been confirmed (male specimens were collected). Additionally, three springs located at the slopes of the Neretva Valley were examined. Zalomka River exhibited an entirely different water beetle assemblage in comparison to that of the Neretva River and its tributaries, resulting from its intermittent character.\n , \n Kot nadaljevanje raziskovanja favne vodnih hroščev zgornjega toka reke Neretve v letu 2022 smo na drugem »Tednu znanosti Neretva« junija 2023 vzorčili dodatne pritoke. Potrdili smo prisotnost bosanske endemične vrste Hydraena bosnica (moški osebki). Poleg tega smo povzorčili tri izvire na obronkih doline Neretve. Reka Zalomka ima popolnoma drugačno združbo vodnih hroščev kot Neretva s pritoki, kar je posledica njenega presihajočega značaja.\nApstrakt. Dodatne informacije o vodenim tvrdokrilcima sliva gornje Neretve i rijeke Zalomke – Kao nastavak istraživanja faune vodenih insekata gornjeg toka rijeke Neretve započetog 2022. godine, istraživanje je nastavljeno tokom Druge sedmice nauke (jun 2023. godine). Prikupljani su uzorci sa novih lokaliteta i potvrđeno je prisustvo bosanskohercegovačke endemske vrste Hydraena bosnica (muški primjerci). Uz to, prikupljeni su uzorci sa još tri izvora sa padina iznad rijeke Neretve. Rijeka Zalomka ima potpuno drugačiju zajednicu vodenih insekata od rijeke Neretve i njenih pritoka, što je rezultat njenog povremenog toka.",

Asadeteva was originally described from Afghanistan and Pakistan, while recent report has extended its known range into the Oriental Region. Herein, we report two new species of Asadeteva from Thailand, namely Asadeteva christophi U. Aspöck & H. Aspöck sp. nov. and Asadeteva thailandica sp. nov. This discovery highlights the presence and diversity of this genus in the Oriental Region. A distribution map and a revised key to the species of Asadeteva are also provided.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract\n Snakeflies (Raphidioptera) are the smallest order of holometabolous insects that have kept their distinct and name-giving appearance since the Mesozoic, probably since the Jurassic, and possibly even since their emergence in the Carboniferous, more than 300 million years ago. Despite their interesting nature and numerous publications on their morphology, taxonomy, systematics, and biogeography, snakeflies have never received much attention from the general public, and only a few studies were devoted to their molecular biology. Due to this lack of molecular data, it is therefore unknown, if the conserved morphological nature of these living fossils translates to conserved genomic structures. Here, we present the first genome of the species and of the entire order of Raphidioptera. The final genome assembly has a total length of 669 Mbp and reached a high continuity with an N50 of 5.07 Mbp. Further quality controls also indicate a high completeness and no meaningful contamination. The newly generated data was used in a large-scaled phylogenetic analysis of snakeflies using shared orthologous sequences. Quartet score and gene concordance analyses revealed high amounts of conflicting signals within this group that might speak for substantial incomplete lineage sorting and introgression after their presumed re-radiation after the asteroid impact 66 million years ago. Overall, this reference genome will be a door-opening dataset for many future research applications, and we demonstrated its utility in a phylogenetic analysis that provides new insights into the evolution of this group of living fossils.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract\n The sequential breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea since the Middle Jurassic is one of the crucial factors that has driven the biogeographical patterns of terrestrial biotas. Despite decades of effort searching for concordant patterns between diversification and continental fragmentation among taxonomic groups, increasing evidence has revealed more complex and idiosyncratic scenarios resulting from a mixture of vicariance, dispersal and extinction. Aquatic insects with discreet ecological requirements, low vagility and disjunct distributions represent a valuable model for testing biogeographical hypotheses by reconstructing their distribution patterns and temporal divergences. Insects of the order Megaloptera have exclusively aquatic larvae, their adults have low vagility, and the group has a highly disjunct geographical distribution. Here we present a comprehensive phylogeny of Megaloptera based on a large‐scale mitochondrial genome sequencing of 99 species representing >90% of the world genera from all major biogeographical regions. Molecular dating suggests that the deep divergence within Megaloptera pre‐dates the breakup of Pangaea. Subsequently, the intergeneric divergences within Corydalinae (dobsonflies), Chauliodinae (fishflies) and Sialidae (alderflies) might have been driven by both vicariance and dispersal correlated with the shifting continent during the Cretaceous, but with strikingly different and incongruent biogeographical signals. The austral distribution of many corydalids appears to be a result of colonization from Eurasia through southward dispersal across Europe and Africa during the Cretaceous, whereas a nearly contemporaneous dispersal via northward rafting of Gondwanan landmasses may account for the colonization of extant Eurasian alderflies from the south.",

"abstractNote": "Ornatoraphidia flavilabris\n (Costa, 1851) is one of 15 snakefly species occurring in southern parts of Central Europe. It is a polycentric Mediterranean faunal element with refugia in the Apennine Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. Two phylogeographic questions are dealt with in this paper:\n \n (1) Is it possible to differentiate, morphologically or genetically, the Balkanic populations from the Italian?\n (2) Did the species reach Central Europe from the Balkan or Apennine Peninsula?\n \n These questions were investigated using morphological and molecular biological methods. No morphological characters were uncovered which could serve to differentiate specimens from either distribution center. However, differences were detected in\n cox1\n ,\n cox3\n and\n 28S\n genes which allow for a reliable differentiation. Central European populations were largely identical with populations from Italy, but distinctly different from specimens from Greece. This could lead one to assume that the species migrated from Italy to Central Europe, although colonization from the southeast would appear easier due to more favorable orographic conditions. This discrepancy may be explained by the apparent absence of\n O. flavilabris\n from the large central part of the Balkan Peninsula, so that a gap exists between the southern and northern areas inhabited by\n O. flavilabris\n . Moreover, the species does not occur in eastern parts of Europe. Thus it would be more probable to assume that the occurrence of the species in the northwest Balkan Peninsula can be traced to migrations from the Apennine Peninsula to areas north and northeast of the Adriatic Sea, where\n O. flavilabris\n may have colonized the southeast of Central Europe.\n \n A migration of Adriatomediterranean faunal elements from the northwest Balkan Peninsula to Central Europe might be of more significance than previously assumed.",

"abstractNote": "Adult external morphology of the extant raptorial Mantispoidea (Insecta: Neuroptera: Mantispidae and Rhachiberothidae) is compared emphasizing the morphology of the subfamily Symphrasinae as a key group to understand the phylogenetic relationships among the members of the superfamily. Plega dactylota Rehn, 1939 is thoroughly characterized in order to exemplify the morphology of the Symphrasinae. Additionally, following a review of the literature and examination of comparative material of Dilaridae, Berothidae, Rhachiberothidae and all Mantispidae subfamilies, a new interpretation of the components of the raptorial apparatus (i.e., head, prothorax, grasping forelegs, as well as integumentary specializations) is presented. Also, wing venation for these groups is reinterpreted, and new homology hypotheses for wing venation are proposed based on tracheation and comparative analyses. Given the high morphological divergence on the genital sclerites within the Mantispoidea, plus the confusing previous usage of neutral terminology and terms referring to appendages across taxonomic and morphological studies, we attempt to standardize, simplify, and situate terminology in an evolutionary context under the “gonocoxite concept” (multi-coxopod hypothesis). The remarkable morphological similarity of the genital sclerites of Symphrasinae and Rhachiberothidae (sensu U. Aspöck & Mansell 1994) with the Nallachinae (Dilaridae) was taken as a starting point to understand the morphology of other Mantispidae subfamilies. Based on these morphological comparisons, we provide a revised phylogenetic analysis of Mantispoidea. This new phylogenetic analysis supports a sister group relationship between the family Rhachiberothidae, comprising Rhachiberothinae and Symphrasinae, and the family Mantispidae, including the subfamily Mantispinae and its sister taxa Drepanicinae and Calomantispinae, which may represent a single subfamily. Based on these analyses, raptorial condition probably evolved a single time in these insects and subsequently became diversified in the two sister clades of the raptorial Mantispoidea.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract\n \n Background\n The latest advancements in DNA sequencing technologies have facilitated the resolution of the phylogeny of insects, yet parts of the tree of Holometabola remain unresolved. The phylogeny of Neuropterida has been extensively studied, but no strong consensus exists concerning the phylogenetic relationships within the order Neuroptera. Here, we assembled a novel transcriptomic dataset to address previously unresolved issues in the phylogeny of Neuropterida and to infer divergence times within the group. We tested the robustness of our phylogenetic estimates by comparing summary coalescent and concatenation-based phylogenetic approaches and by employing different quartet-based measures of phylogenomic incongruence, combined with data permutations.\n \n \n Results\n Our results suggest that the order Raphidioptera is sister to Neuroptera + Megaloptera. Coniopterygidae is inferred as sister to all remaining neuropteran families suggesting that larval cryptonephry could be a ground plan feature of Neuroptera. A clade that includes Nevrorthidae, Osmylidae, and Sisyridae (i.e. Osmyloidea) is inferred as sister to all other Neuroptera except Coniopterygidae, and Dilaridae is placed as sister to all remaining neuropteran families. Ithonidae is inferred as the sister group of monophyletic Myrmeleontiformia. The phylogenetic affinities of Chrysopidae and Hemerobiidae were dependent on the data type analyzed, and quartet-based analyses showed only weak support for the placement of Hemerobiidae as sister to Ithonidae + Myrmeleontiformia. Our molecular dating analyses suggest that most families of Neuropterida started to diversify in the Jurassic and our ancestral character state reconstructions suggest a primarily terrestrial environment of the larvae of Neuropterida and Neuroptera.\n \n \n Conclusion\n Our extensive phylogenomic analyses consolidate several key aspects in the backbone phylogeny of Neuropterida, such as the basal placement of Coniopterygidae within Neuroptera and the monophyly of Osmyloidea. Furthermore, they provide new insights into the timing of diversification of Neuropterida. Despite the vast amount of analyzed molecular data, we found that certain nodes in the tree of Neuroptera are not robustly resolved. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of integrating the results of morphological analyses with those of sequence-based phylogenomics. We also suggest that comparative analyses of genomic meta-characters should be incorporated into future phylogenomic studies of Neuropterida.",

Here, we present a revision of Dilar from South Asia, with descriptions of five new species, namely Dilar austroindicus sp. nov., Dilar biprojectus sp. nov., Dilar clavatus sp. nov., Dilar miralobatus sp. nov., and Dilar truncatus sp. nov. In addition, Dilar nietneri Hagen, 1858, from Sri Lanka is re-described. A key to males of Dilar from South Asia is provided.",
