"ABSTRACT\n \n Objectives\n Selected pelvic features, formerly “parturition scars,” have long been interpreted as osteological indicators of pregnancy and childbirth, presumably caused by biomechanical stresses. Yet, most evidence derives from archaeological collections lacking detailed documented reproductive histories. This study examined whether parity is associated with classic pelvic features in a clinical sample of women with known reproductive histories and, for comparison, in men. In addition, we evaluated urinary incontinence as a functional outcome related to reproductive histories.\n \n \n Materials and Methods\n \n Pelvic CT scans from 84 individuals (39 parous women, 20 nulliparous women, 25 men) were assessed for five pelvic features: dorsal pubic pitting, extended pubic tubercle, preauricular sulcus, sacral preauricular extension, sacral preauricular notch. Reproductive history and urinary incontinence were recorded. Group differences were analyzed using nonparametric and\n χ\n 2\n tests. Age‐adjusted binary logistic regression was performed to assess the association between parity and urinary incontinence.\n \n \n \n Results\n Skeletal pelvic features were similarly frequent in parous and nulliparous women. The preauricular sulcus was present in approximately half of all women and absent in men, indicating a sex‐associated pattern rather than an association with parity. No other individual pelvic feature showed consistent differences by parity, only by sex. Combinations of pelvic features were rare. Urinary incontinence was more prevalent among parous women; parity remained associated with incontinence after age adjustment. In this article, we conduct an \n osteobiographical assessment of the human remains of fourteen Selk'nam \n individuals, which are now housed in the Department of Anthropology, Natural \n History Museum Vienna, Austria. The aim is to bring these individuals closer to \n their communities of origin by using non-invasive methods aimed at rebuilding \n their biological profiles (i.e., age-at-death, biological sex and health \n status), adding to these with results from provenance research. This way, the \n human remains were assigned a new identity closer to their original one, through \n a process that we call ‘re-individualisation’. This is especially \n significant since it must be assumed that the individuals were exhumed against \n their cultural belief system. Yet\n knowledge can not only be created by using the collection for research. The\n history of a collection can also be reconstructed, albeit mostly in a\n fragmentary way. This is important when there is evidence that the collection\n was acquired in a colonial context, when the collection contains human remains\n and more so if these were taken from Indigenous peoples. Reconstructing the\n history of a collection can assist source communities in strengthening their\n identities and help to regain lost knowledge about their ancestors. While its definition therefore proves to be elusive, it may serve as a way to research and reconstruct human behavior. This also applies to bioarchaeology, which is dedicated to the study of past societies through the analysis of human remains. The aim of this article is to analyze the general development, methodological key concepts, studied markers, and potential paradigm changes in the study of violence in bioarchaeology. This is done by applying bibliometric tools to selected scientific publications and building on previous research analyzing paleopathological literature. The results are then compared to qualitative reviews on violence in bioarchaeology to draw conclusions about significance and applicability of bibliometric network analysis in the light of the expanding scientific literature. Ancient DNA (aDNA) studies show that these populations\nadmixed with local hunter-gatherers and formed the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) culture. Dietary stable\nisotope-based studies demonstrate contrasts between the preceding hunter-gatherer and the LBK diet.\naDNA analysis has also shown that in Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age there was admixture between\nthe local pre-existing Neolithic and the incoming Yamnaya population originating in the Caucasus,\ncontributing to the development of the Corded Ware Culture (c. 2500-2200 B.C). Isotopic studies\ndemonstrated coupled changes in diet arising mainly from the greater consumption of dairy products.\nSince Early - Middle Neolithic and Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age Central European populations\nhave different structures and diets and knowing that mandibular morphology is impacted by both factors,\nthis study will examine if Neolithic and Bronze Age Austrian mandibular morphology differs between\nthese chronologies. Some differences are expected and, to test this, Neolithic (n= 27) and Bronze Age\n(n=15) mandibles from Lower Austria were analyzed using Geometric Morphometrics (GM). First, the\nspecimens were digitized using an Einscan Pro 2x Plus surface scanner. Then, Amira® was used to\nextract 21 landmarks (LM) coordinates from the 3D images of the 42 mandibles that were sufficiently\npreserved for the morphological analysis.\nThe R package Geomorph was used to estimate the location of missing LMs when necessary (restricted to\na maximum of five missing LMs per specimen to minimize estimation error) and to undertake ensuing\nstandard GM analyses - GPA, analysis of morphological variance, examination of size differences based\non centroid size, and analysis of shape using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and TPS based\nvisualization of shape differences along the PCs. Last, PERMANOVA was also used to test for\nhypothetical shape differences using all PCs.\nContrary to what was predicted, no morphological differences were found between the two samples.\nInterestingly, larger morphological variance was observed in the Neolithic sample (despite not statistically\nsignificant). Large parts of Moser’s collection,\nincluding the lithic and osseous assemblages and two human skulls from Grotta Moser,\nlater reached the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW).\nA reassessment of Moser’s collection and recent examination of his diaries led to a tentative\nproposition of a Mesolithic chronology for the burials found in Grotta Moser, previously\nconsidered Roman. This gave impulse to a reconsideration of the two skulls in the Anthropological\ncollection of the NHMW, including the performance of radiocarbon dating, which\nconfirmed an Early Mesolithic attribution. The unexpected outcome spurred a revaluation\nof the entire Grotta Moser assemblage.\nWith this poster, we aim to present initial results on the site’s biography and ongoing analysis\nof its material culture, including the provenance and techno-morphological aspects of the lithic assemblage, alongside a techno-typological study of osseous artefacts. The Traisen valley in northeastern Austria is one of the core regions of the\nEarly La Tène period, where proximity to important trade routes along the Danube and mountain valleys supported a\nhigh density of La Tène settlements and associated emeteries. The archaeological assemblage has been studied extensively\nand provides excellent background for archaeogenetic case study of community structure within a Central European microregion and its cross-regional connections. We extracted ancient DNA from 235 individuals from seven sites within the Traisen river valley to understand connectivity from the local to continental scale. We determined close and distant genetic relationships within and between sites, including several groups of closely-related individuals buried in close proximity to each other and second-degree relationships spanning across different sites. We also characterised the genetic diversity of the ancient individuals, which includes individuals most closely related to northern as well as southern Europe. Finally, we combined genetic, isotope and archaeological information to assess long-distance mobility patterns and understand the role of the Traisen valley in the cross-European trade networks.
