Dedicated virtual reality (VR) systems have been utilized also in astronaut training. However\nthere are no detailed descriptions of projection wall VR systems and related interaction techniques for astronaut assembly training in\nzero gravity conditions. Back projection technology tends to have certain advantages over head mounted displays including less\nsimulation sickness and less restricted user movement. A prototype was built to evaluate the usefulness of projection technology VEs and\ninteraction techniques for astronaut training. This was achieved by first constructing a PC cluster-based general purpose VE software\nand hardware platform. This platform was used to implement a testing prototype for astronaut assembly sequence training. An\ninteraction tool battery was designed for the purposes of viewpoint control and object handling. A selected training task was\nimplemented as a case study for further analysis based on laptop usage in the Fluid Science Laboratory (FSL) inside the Columbus\nmodule in the International Space Station (ISS). User tests were conducted on the usability of the prototype for the intended training\npurpose. Technological developments such as the Internet and\nWebcams, the popularity of reality television, and increasing interest in\nobtaining an intimate view of world events, have transformed expectations\nas to the volume and type of information that would be transmitted\nback to Earth. The first humans on Mars will therefore need to be\ntrained in communications, to be able to satisfy the public’s curiosity\nfor knowledge and to translate what they are experiencing in a way that\nis understandable to all. Analogue research expeditions carried out by\nMars Society Australia (MSA) and the Mars Society of Canada (MSC)\nin places such as the Australian Outback and the Mars Desert Research\nStation in Utah, U.S.A., together with associated PR and outreach activities,\nmay assist in clarifying the role of these tools in a future Mars\nmission, including identification of typical crew training needs. Outreach\nactivities and academic publications based on the output of these\nprograms also raise the profile of Mars analogue research amongst the\npublic at large and the scientific community. This relationship between high\nschool science education and the public understanding of science is poorly understood. Do adults forget their science education,\nor did they never grasp it in the first place? A 2003 science education project raised these questions when 24 16-year-olds from\n10 Sydney high schools were brought into contact with real science. The unexpected results suggested that even good high\nschool science students have a poor understanding of how science is really undertaken in the field and in the laboratory. This\nconcept is being further tested in a new high school science education project, aimed at the same age group, using authentic\nastrobiology cutting-edge data, NASA Learning Technologies tools, a purpose-built research Information and Communication\nTechnology-aided learning facility and a collaboration that spans three continents.
