Mithilfe moderner Aufnahmetechniken analysieren sie die akustische Vielfalt als Indikator für die lokale Waldbiodiversität.\nIn Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bundesforschungszentrum für Wald (BFW), dem Naturhistorischen Museum Wien, WienXtra Soundbase und Radio Orange nehmen Schüler:innen des Bildungscampus Deutschordenstraße an interaktiven Workshops und Exkursionen teil. Dabei lernen sie nicht nur die Grundlagen der Biodiversität des Waldes, Lebensraumstruktur sowie der Bioakustik, sondern auch Know-How in der Soundbearbeitung und gestalten kreative Wald-Soundmixes. Diese Ergebnisse werden in Podcasts und Radiosendungen präsentiert, um ein breites Publikum für die Vielfalt und Schutzwürdigkeit der Wälder zu sensibilisieren.\nDarüber hinaus fließen die gesammelten akustischen Daten über Citizen-Science-Plattformen wie iNaturalist in die wissenschaftliche Forschung ein und tragen so zur Erhebung von Daten über Artenvielfalt und Lebensräume bei. Der Fokus liegt dabei auch auf der Untersuchung von Waldmerkmalen wie Totholz und Mikrohabitaten, die die akustische und biologische Vielfalt prägen.\n„Forest Groove“ bietet Schüler:innen eine einzigartige Möglichkeit, die Ökosysteme des Waldes durch Klang zu entdecken und die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschung kreativ aufzubereiten. This study presents and analyzes bird observations from 2010 to 2023, emphasizing less accessible regions like the Hkakabo Razi Landscape, Shan States, Tanintharyi, and the Ayeyarwady delta. Utilizing audio-visual records, we document 13 bird species, including range extensions and novel sightings. Our findings highlight Myanmar’s critical role in avian biodiversity, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts. The network has six working groups covering a diverse range of core topics within wildlife malaria research, focusing on genetics and genomics, species identification, vectors, haematology, communities, and communication. Up to now, the network includes 229 members from 45 countries including Europe, America, Africa, and Asia, but this number is continually growing. This review outlines the aims and goals of WIMANET, providing a summary of activities and plans for each of the six working groups for the next years. The network is open to new members, and we provide details on how both new and existing members can get involved in the network and take part in activities. Among them is the Eurasian Kestrel\n Falco tinnunculus\n , which occupies high trophic levels and may be adversely affected by reduced food quantity or quality and consequent health impacts. In this study, we investigate the effects of habitat heterogeneity, individual heterozygosity and diet diversity on five different health indices (integument coloration, dietary antioxidants, haematocrit, body condition and parasite infection). The study was conducted in farmland areas of western Finland during a year of exceptionally low vole abundance. We found no obvious relationship between diet diversity and habitat heterogeneity. An interaction between diet diversity and individual heterozygosity in females suggested that diet specialists were able to maintain more intensely coloured integuments only if they had higher genetic diversity. In addition, more heterozygous females were less likely to be infected with\n Haemoproteus\n than females with lower individual genetic diversity. Finally, specialist males with lower diet diversity had higher body condition than males with a more generalist diet. Our results suggest that variation in individual quality and foraging ecology should be considered in conjunction with spatial variation in habitat heterogeneity to understand sex‐specific variation in kestrel health. We quantified the effects of Triad zoning on biodiversity in (sub)montane eutrophic European beech forests. Using a European-wide multitaxon database and a “virtual” landscape approach (i.e., by resampling empirical data), we evaluated how the proportion of Triad management categories affected the landscape-level species diversity of birds, saproxylic beetles, vascular plants, epiphytic bryophytes, lichens, and wood-inhabiting fungi, as well as multitaxonomic diversity. The results varied greatly among taxonomic groups. Multitaxonomic diversity peaked in landscapes composed of 60% unmanaged and 40% intensively managed forests. While intensive management can benefit some taxa through the creation of open habitats, unmanaged forests are the backbone of biodiversity conservation, underlining the need to safeguard the remaining old-growth forests under natural dynamics, and to extend the current area of unmanaged forests in Europe. Extensive forest management, however, did not contribute to biodiversity conservation as expected. To investigate their genetic profiles and influence on local breeding, we analyzed our previously\ngenerated shallow shotgun DNA data from 402 Late Iron Age and Roman equids, supplemented with\nmitochondrial and nuclear capture data from 40 to 31 equids from the same regions and periods. Late Iron\nAge and Roman horses exhibit high matrilineal diversity, with unique haplogroups in the latter indicating\nexogenous animals. The preferred use of male mounts in army service mentioned in historical writings is\nconfirmed. The absence of donkey jacks in our study area and the lack of mule matrilineal lineages unique\nto Late Iron Age horses contradict local hybrid breeding. Such studies depend on the access to a comprehensive reference data base, covering all relevant taxa. Here we present a comprehensive DNA barcode inventory of all amphibian and reptile species native to Austria, except for the putatively extinct Vipera ursinii rakosiensis and Lissotriton helveticus, which has been only recently reported for the very western edge of Austria. A total of 194 DNA barcodes were generated in the framework of the Austrian Barcode of Life (ABOL) initiative. Species identification via DNA barcodes was successful for most species, except for the hybridogenetic species complex of water frogs (Pelophylax spp.) and the crested newts (Triturus spp.), in areas of sympatry. However, DNA barcoding also proved powerful in detecting deep conspecific lineages, e.g. within Natrix natrix or the wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), resulting in more than one Barcode Index Number (BIN) per species. Moreover, DNA barcodes revealed the presence of Natrix helvetica, which has been elevated to species level only recently, and genetic signatures of the Italian water frog Pelophylax bergeri in Western Austria for the first time. Comparison to previously published DNA barcoding data of European amphibians and reptiles corroborated the results of the Austrian data but also revealed certain peculiarities, underlining the particular strengths and in the case of the genus Pelophylax also the limitations of DNA barcoding. Consequently, DNA barcoding is not only powerful for species identification of all life stages of most Austrian amphibian and reptile species, but also for the detection of new species, the monitoring of gene flow or the presence of alien populations and/or species. essential for assessing the impact of roads on biodiversity. In most European countries data on road-killed huntable wildlife exists, but data on other vertebrate species (e.g. amphibians, reptiles, small mammals) is scarce. Therefore, we conducted a citizen science project on road-killed vertebrates as a useful supplement to data on huntable wildlife collected by public authorities. The dataset contains 15198 reports with 17163 individual road-killed vertebrates collected by 912 participants. The reports were made in 44 countries, but the majority of data was reported in Austria. We implemented a data validation routine which led to three quality levels. Reports in quality level 1 are published via GBIF, reports in quality level 2 via Zenodo and reports in quality level 3 were deleted.
