            "abstractNote": "Abstract Conodont elements, consisting of crown and basal tissue are the well-known fossilized hard parts of Conodonta (extinct marine chordates), but the taphonomic processes leading to decomposition or remineralization of the basal tissue are not well understood. Here we focus on the taphonomy of basal tissue, reviewing the published record and describing new material from Asia and Europe (248 occurrences globally). These include crown and basal tissue in conjunction, and isolated basal bodies showing different stages of preservation. Some isolated specimens resemble phosphate rings similar to those assigned to Phosphannulus universalis. High-resolution biostratigraphy indicates that the lamellar type of conodont basal tissue is found in all facies and depositional environments. Other basal tissue types, described in the literature as tubular, mesodentine, spherulitic or lamellar with canalules, are limited to the early Palaeozoic and found exclusively in siliciclastic deposits (with the exception of spherulitic tissue). Although the stratigraphic record of basal tissue spans the range of Euconodonta (Cambrian?Triassic), this study shows that most of the isolated plate and ring-like structures are derived from early Palaeozoic coniform conodonts. Basal tissue of platform-type elements has a much more fragile shape and is therefore rarely preserved as a recognizable isolated unit.",

            "abstractNote": "The early Miocene mollusc faunas from the Proto-Mediterranean Sea are still poorly-known. Herein, Aquitanian gastropod assemblages from the Felli section in NW Greece are described. Two assemblages were recovered, a low-diversity coastal mudflat assemblage dominated by Granulolabium plicatum (Bruguière, 1792) and Mesohalina margaritacea (Brocchi, 1814), and a high-diversity marine assemblage dominated by Bittium larrieyense (Vignal, 1911). The marine assemblage yielded 44 species, of which three species are described as new and 23 are left in open nomenclature. A new combination is proposed for Finella perpusilla (Grateloup, 1827). The family Pyramidellidae is exceptionally represented by 15 species. 17 new occurences are reported for the Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Alvania amphitrite n. sp., Homalopoma acaste n. sp. and Pyramistomia aliakmoni n. sp. are introduced as new species.",

            "abstractNote": "Abstract\n            The formations underlying the Neogene infill of the Vienna Basin are still poorly documented. Until now correlation of subsurface lithostratigraphic units with those of the Rhenodanubian nappe system and the Magura nappe system, outcropping at the basin margins, has been based on extrapolations. A recent drilling campaign in the Bernhardsthal oil field of the northern Vienna Basin in Austria reached the pre-Neogene basement and provided cuttings for biostratigraphic and paleoecological analyses. Based on these data, acquired by using detailed micro- and nanno-paleontological analyses, a Lutetian age (middle Eocene) and a bathyal depositional environment for the Flysch of the Harrersdorf Unit was documented. The lithological similarity of the drilling with the Steinberg Flysch Formation of the Greifenstein Nappe and its Lutetian age suggests, that the middle Eocene part of the Harrersdorf Unit represents a continuation of the Greifenstein Nappe of the Rhenodanubian Flysch, rather than a frontal part of the Rača Nappe of the Magura Flysch as previously thought.",

            "abstractNote": "We describe the first endocast reconstruction of a hyaenodont mammal based on X-ray microtomography. The endocast belongs to the type material of the European hyaenodont Proviverra typica. We performed phylogenetic analysis to contextualize the evolution of endocranial size and complexity in Hyaenodonta. We added several European hyaenodonts and modified several codings of the most recent character–taxon matrix established to question the relationships within Hyaenodonta. Including these new species in a phylogenetic analysis reveals a new clade: Hyaenodontoidea. Comparisons with several previously described endocasts show that there was an increase in complexity in the convolutions of the encephalon within Hyaenodontidae history. Moreover, the analysis of the encephalization quotient reveals that the endocranium of the Hyaenodonta is not smaller than those of fossil Carnivora or some extant Carnivora. Therefore, the extinction of Hyaenodonta may not be linked to the relative size of hyaenodont brains.",

            "abstractNote": "Abstract\n            Phytosaurs are a group of carnivorous, semi-aquatic archosaurian reptiles that attained an almost global distribution during the Late Triassic. We here describe a new species of the phytosaur genus Mystriosuchus from the Norian Dachstein Limestone of Austria, from a marine lagoonal depositional environment. The new Austrian material comprises remains of at least four individuals of similar size (c. 4 m in total length) found in association but disarticulated, and includes one complete and two partial skulls and postcrania. All of these specimens apparently represent a single taxon, which is distinguished by numerous anatomical features from the two previously named Mystriosuchus species. Maximum parsimony analysis of a comprehensive morphological dataset provides strong statistical support for the phylogenetic position of the new Austrian taxon in Mystriosuchus, as the sister taxon to a clade comprising M. planirostris and M. westphali. Histological analysis suggests that the Austrian phytosaur specimens represent individuals that were at least eight years old at time of death, but which had not yet reached skeletal maturity. Taphonomic and palaeoenvironmental data suggest that these phytosaurs were living in the marine lagoon in which they were preserved, providing the strongest evidence to date of marine adaptations in phytosaurs.",

            "abstractNote": "The role of tectonic horizontal stresses in activating deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSD) has rarely been studied. We applied a new numerical technique for determining the present-day stress states within a large DSGSD, situated near the Periadriatic Line fault (PAL) in the Eastern Alps. The stress states were calculated from three-dimensional displacements of the sinistral Obir fault conjugated to the dextral PAL fault, which also forms the upper DSGSD detachment plane. The analysed fault displacements occurred in two distinct activity phases associated with the elastic rebound along (i) the Obir fault in the summer of 2014, and (ii) the core of the PAL fault in the winter of 2014/2015. These periods were synchronous with the periods of increased local seismicity. The results brought an insight into a possible causative link between horizontal tectonic stresses and DSGSDs activation. We observed, that transient dextral transpressions and dextral transtensions opposing to the general fault kinematics associated to the elastic rebound had a potential to destabilize the DSGSD at the micrometre level. The applied stress-tensor calculation, although restricted only to shallow near-surface conditions, is a reliable method that can reveal stress states almost in the real-time.",

            "abstractNote": "A large karst doline at section Hrastje – Lešnica in the Dolenjska region (SE Slovenia) was uncovered during the construction of Slovene highway No. A2. Its fill consists of brownish-yellow clay to silt with plant remains and ferrugineous coatings after root casts and gastropods (paleosol horizon) in the bottom, and overlying thick lacustrine laminated grey clayey sediments which were partly rubified. Brownish-yellow clay to silt contains quartz, chlorite, muscovite and feldspars transported as external clastic material from evolved karst and non-carbonate landscapes from surroundings into the site. The material is well weathered only in the area of the paleosol horizon. The strongly impoverished malacocoenosis indicates any Quaternary warm phase characterized by light semi-open forest with patches of open ground habitats. Only the last paleomagnetic sample in the bottom of sediment sequence shows reverse polarity of magnetic field and represents the geomagnetic excursion, i.e., the Blake excursion at ca 120–112 ka (MIS 5e), rather than Brunhes/Matuyama boundary at 0.78 Ma (MIS 19). Thick lacustrine laminated grey clayey sediments above are also dominated by quartz, muscovite, chlorite and feldspar. That overlying sediment was almost unweathered (content of feldspars, muscovite and chlorite); it was only slightly rubified on its surface, in middle part of the section and at the contact with the underlying karstified limestone slope of the depression. The grey sediment has a different mineralogical composition than underlying soils (e.g., lack of quartz, chlorite) and non-carbonate residue of the host limestone. Therefore, the grey sediments could not serve as a parent (source) material for terra rossa formation in the broader area (i.e., polygenetic red soils developed in paleoclimate related to current Mediterranean climatic conditions). Laminated grey sediment was deposited in a rather cold climate. Relatively poor palynospectra may indicate transport of pollen grains out of the depocentre with flowing water and/or the rapid deposition. The latter is supported by insufficiently centered paleosecular variations. Plant assemblages indicate that the dominant cover of the surrounding landscape was temperate climatic zone riparian forest with some quite humid environment as wetlands and ponds on periodically flooded plain. The regional correlation, based especially on an abundance of Fagus, indicates the deposition at the beginning of the last glacial cycle (Würmian) in its warmer substage – MIS 5c (ca 105–95 ka). All paleomagnetic samples from this part of the sediment section show normal magnetization and negligible clockwise rotation of 1.8° ± 4.7°.Key words: karst sediments, mineralogy, gastropods, palynology, paleomagnetism, paleoenvironment, Dolenjska region, Slovenia.Pozno pleistocenski jezerski sedimenti in njihova povezava z rdečimi tlemi na severovzhodnem robu Dinarskega krasa Na Dolenjskem krasu je bila med graditvijo trase A2 slovenskega avtocestnega križa na odseku Hrastje–Lešnica razgaljena večja vrtača. V spodnjem delu je bila povsem zapolnjena z rjavkastorumenim sedimentom glinene do meljaste frakcije, v zgornjem delu pa z debelim zaporedjem laminiranega sivega glinenega sedimenta, ki je bil ponekod rahlo rubificiran. Rjavkasto rumeni glineni do meljasti sediment na dnu vrtače, v katerem so posamezni rastlinski ostanki, s koreninami povezane ferigene skorje in gastropodi (paleotalni horizont), vsebuje kremen, klorit, muskovit in plagioklaze. Ti so bili preneseni v vrtačo kot klastični material z bližnjih območij razvijajočega se kraškega in nekarbonatnega (fluvialnega) površja. Dobro preperel material je le v območju paleotalnega horizonta. Močno osiromašena malakocenoza nakazuje eno od toplih faz kvartarja, ko so prevladovali svetli gozdovi z redkimi drevesi in jasami odprtih talnih habitatov. Samo zadnji od paleomagnetnih vzorcev na dnu raziskanega sedimentnega zaporedja kaže reverzno polarnost magnetnega polja. Menimo, da ta reverzna polarnost kaže na t. i. Blakeovo geomagnetno ekskurzijo pred cca 120.000 in 112.000 leti (MIS 5e) in ne meje Brunhes/Matuyama pred 780.000 leti (MIS 19). Tudi v debelem zaporedju sivih laminiranih glinastih jezerskih sedimentov prevladujejo med minerali kremen, muskovit, klorit in glinenci. Glede na ohranjenost glinenih mineralov, muskovita in klorita sklepamo, da so ti sedimenti skoraj neprepereli; rahlo so rubificirani le na površju, v osrednjem delu profila in na stiku z zakraselo podlago vrtače. Mineraloška sestava sivih sedimentov je drugačna kot v spodaj ležečem talnem horizontu, kjer je manj kremena in klorita, razlikuje pa se tudi od nekarbonatnega preperinskega ostanka apnenčaste prikamnine. Kot tak torej siv sediment ni izvorni material na sosednjih območjih pogoste terre rosse (poligenetska rdeča tla, razvita v pleoklimatskih razmerah, podobnih današnjemu mediteranskemu podnebju). Laminirani sedimenti so se odložili v razmeroma hladnem obdobju. Dokaj siromašen palinospekter lahko kaže po eni strani, da so bila pelodna zrna odstranjena iz depocentra s tekočo vodo, po drugi pa na visoko hitrost sedimentacije. V prid temu procesu pritrjujejo tudi premalo centrirane paleosekularne variacije. Rastlinske združbe nakazujejo, da je bila bližnja okolica v glavnem porasla z obrežnimi gozdovi zmernega podnebnega pasu, kjer so se v humidnih obdobjih poplavljenih ravnic občasno pojavljala tudi mokrišča in manjše ojezeritve. Regionalne korelacije, ki temeljijo predvsem na veliki količini pelodov bukve (Fagus) kažejo, da so se sivi glinasti sedimenti odlagali v toplejšem obdobju na začetku zadnjega poledenitvenega cikla (Würm) med t. i. MIS 5c pred okoli 105.000 do 95.000 leti. Vsi paleomagnetni vzorci tega dela sedimentnega profila kažejo normalno magnetizacijo in zanemarljivo rotacijo 1,8° ± 4,7° v smeri urinega kazalca.Ključne besede: kraški sedimenti, mineralogija, polži, palinologija, paleomagnetizem, paleookolje, Dolenjska, Slovenija.",

            "abstractNote": "We present a critical evaluation of the taxonomy, stratigraphy and biogeography of the turritellid gastropods of the Miocene Paratethys Sea. 159 species-level names and 6 infrasubspecific names have been used for Paratethyan Turritellidae since 1848. Of these, only 35 species are accepted herein as valid species, with some uncertainties due to poor preservation or limited access to type material. Maximum diversities occurred during the early middle Miocene (Langhian, Badenian) coinciding with the Miocene Climatic Optimum. Whilst early Miocene turritellid assemblages are characterized by large to very large species of Peyrotia, Turritella and Allmonia, middle Miocene assemblages are predominated by medium-sized species of Archimediella, Helminthia, Oligodia and Ptychidia. The taxonomic composition of these faunas, with representatives of Archimediella, Helminthia, Mesalia and Vermicularia suggests a biogeographic affiliation with Atlantic and especially West African faunas.                Turritellinella new gen. is established as new genus for the eastern Atlantic-Mediterranean Turritella tricarinata/communis complex. Viennella is described as new genus with Turritella incisaeformis Csepreghy-Meznerics 1956 as type species. Allmonia new gen. is introduced as new genus for European Cenozoic Protominae previously placed in Protoma. For the first time, inner lirae are documented as conchological features of Turritellidae.                Six species are described as new, three within the Turritellinae: Archimediella carpathica new sp., Ptychidia erynella new sp. and Viennella ignorata new sp., and three within the Pareorinae: Mesalia sovisi new sp., Mesalia stryriaca new sp. and Mesalia bohnhavasae new sp.. Ptychidia austrorotundata new nom. is proposed as new name Turritella turris rotundata Schaffer 1912, non Turritella rotundata Grzybowski 1899. We designate lectotypes for Turritella gradata Menke in Hörnes, 1855, Haustator striatellatus Sacco, 1895, Allmonia carniolica (Stache, 1858) and Allmonia alterniplicata (Sacco, 1895). Neotypes are designated for Archimediella abundans (Handmann, 1882), Archimediella hoernesi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia partschi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia? ernesti (Handmann, 1882). Rhabdosis Townes, 1970 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) is a junior homonym of Rhabdosis Handmann 1882 (Gastropoda, Turritellidae) and will need a new name.",

            "abstractNote": "The Neogene to Quaternary lateral extrusion of the Eastern Alps towards the Pannonian Basin is accommodated by a system of strike-slip faults. Despite decades-lasting GPS observations, no information on contemporary kinematic behaviour of these faults has been available. Therefore, we had monitored subsidiary and/or conjugated faults associated to these major fault systems in six caves throughout the Eastern Alps over a 1.5–2.5-year observation period by means of high-resolution three-dimensional Moiré extensometers TM71. We confirmed that the monitored faults revealed present-day aseismic displacements at a micrometer level during several activity phases that usually also coincided with periods of increased local seismicity. The annual displacement rates of the monitored faults were mostly about an order of magnitude smaller than the rates of the entire crustal wedges revealed from GNSS. The particular displacements consisted of a variety mechanisms and faulting regimes. Fault dilations and compressions were mostly associated with thermal-volumetric variations, normal dip-slips and downward hanging-wall displacements originated due to gravitational relaxation or mass movement. Displacements with the same mechanisms as the geologically documented fault systems or with an upward component were attributed to tectonic creep and strain built-up during the interseismic period. On the other hand, the countervailing displacements opposite to the master fault kinematics were most probably caused by elastic rebound. They were usually registered few days in advance to distinct local earthquakes that were simultaneously activated at locked segments within the same deformation band. Therefore, the countervailing events could be considered an indicator of impending near earthquake within the rebound zone; their better understanding and real-time detecting could be a step forward to an effective earthquake early warning in similar geological settings.",

            "abstractNote": "The Pannonian Basin of Croatia is the largest back-arc extensional basin on the European continent, located between the Alps, Carpathians and Dinarides. Syn-rift subsidence started at ~18 Ma and predated the onset of the Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO; 17–14.7 Ma). In this paper, we investigate the evolution of the fluvial-lacustrine palaeoenvironment just prior to the transgression of the Central Paratethys Sea. Studies are based on a 17-m-thick section of the Požega palaeolake in the Southern Pannonian Basin using palaeobiological (mollusks, ostracods, palynomorphs, fish otoliths), mineralogical and sedimentological data. Our results reveal fluctuating freshwater and brackish conditions and a pulsating water budget, which we relate to phases in which the basin was, alternatively, hydrologically open and closed. We infer that the alternating environmental conditions can be best-explained by dry and wet periods, respectively. Droughts produced stagnant conditions, algae overproduction and increased salinity levels, supporting the survival of sporadically invading brackish water species. The wet periods, on the other hand, led to lake highstand episodes, expansion of lake area, and to the widespread development of profundal facies. The lake basin eventually became overfilled and connected through outflowing rivers with the Central Paratethys sea. However, the absence of brackish-marine assemblages in the Požega palaeolake nevertheless indicates that there was no marine water inflow from the Central Paratethys at that time.",

            "abstractNote": "A new, systematically collected vertebrate assemblage from the upper Turonian Schönleiten Formation of Gams bei Hieflau, Austria (Northern Calcareous Alps) is described here. The material consists of teeth and bones of chondrichthyan (Selachimorpha indet., Ptychotrygon gueveli) and osteichthyan fishes (cf. Lepisosteus sp., Vidalamiinae indet., Pycnodontidae indet.), amphibians (cf. Thaumastosaurus sp.), lizards (’Lacertilia’ indet.), mosasauroids (Tethysaurinae indet.), Theriosuchus-like and other, peculiar crocodyliforms and theropod dinosaurs (cf. Paronychodon sp.). The faunal composition is most similar to the Santonian fauna of Iharkút, western Hungary, a phenomenon that can be explained by the spatial and temporal closeness of the two landmasses. The Gams assemblage is of great importance since continental vertebrates from the Cenomanian to Santonian interval of Europe are extremely scarce, and it provides a small but significant link between older and younger vertebrate faunas in the region.",
