This paper utilizes a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to assess the airflow characteristics in ventilated and air-conditioned archeological tombs of Egyptian Kings in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt. It is found that the optimum airside design system can be attained, if the airflow is directed to pass all the enclosure areas before the extraction with careful selection of near wall velocities to avoid any wear or aberration of the tomb-wall paintings. The mode of evaluation should assess the airflow characteristics in any tomb passage according to its position in the enclosure and the thermal pattern and air quality. The airside design and internal obstacles are the focus of the present work. The free air supply and mechanically extracted ducted air play an important role in the main flow pattern and the creation of main recirculation zones. The resin, dissolved in a mixture of organic solvents, is extremely fluid, and can be used for deep impregnation of materials of low porosity, such as granite, but has proven to be particularly successful for the consolidation of very porous rocks such as volcanic tuffs. The formula discussed is both chemically and physically very stable; it has a remarkably low yellowing index, very good mechanical properties, and a low cost. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests as well as of in situ trial treatments. Laboratory tests discussed include water absorption, crystallization and compressive tests, and scanning electron microscopy controls before and after treatments of Vicenza Limestone, Red Verona Marble, Proconnesian Marble, and Troadic Granite samples. The standard archaeometric study of prehistoric stone implements follows a procedure that is invasive, expensive and time-consuming. Since Na-pyroxenes may show a large compositional range, a thorough study of the variations affecting the dhkl values, obtained by X-ray diffraction, of three selected reflections as a function of different chemical composition was carried out, in order to determine the chemistry of Na-pyroxene isomorphic mixtures and roughly evaluate their relative amounts. These reflections (\\textbackslashbar221, 310, 002) are sharp, intense and sensitive to the variation of pyroxene chemical composition. Using such dhkl values measured on pyroxenes of known chemistry, a Ca-pyroxene(Di)-jadeite(Jd)-aegirine(Ae) compositional diagram was constructed, from which the composition of an unknown pyroxene can be estimated within an error of about 5%. When the size of the object is relatively small and a flat polished surface is present, the proposed analytical procedure becomes totally non-invasive. Some excavations of tombs have provided some genuine toilet bags, with mirrors, hairpins, eyeliner applicators and makeup receptacles, sometimes still filled with cosmetic compds. Make-up samples have been taken from pots made of stone, ceramic, wood or reed, conserved in the Department of the Egyptian Antiquities of the Louvre Museum and coming from several sites dated between 2100 and 1100 BC. The mineral phases present in the powders have been identified by X-ray diffraction, after SEM observations. Diffraction patterns have been collected in high-resoln. mode at the ESRF and at the LURE and the use of a Rietveld profile refinement method has allowed the quantification of mineral phases. We will discuss the limits of this non-destructive method, applied to extremely small archaeol. samples (about 1 mm3) and to mixts. of up to ten phases.
