            "abstractNote": "Feldspar surfaces respond to chemical, biological, and mechanical weathering. The simplest termination is hydroxyl (OH), which interacts with any adsorption layer. Acid leaching of alkalis and aluminum generated a silica-rich, nanometers-thick skin on certain feldspars. Natural K, Na-feldspars develop fragile surfaces as etch pits expand into micrometer honeycombs, possibly colonized by lichens. Most crystals have various irregular coats. Based on surface-catalytic processes in molecular sieve zeolites, I proposed that some natural feldspars lose weakly bonded Al-OH (aluminol) to yield surfaces terminated by strongly bonded Si-OH (silanol). This might explain why some old feldspar-bearing rocks weather slower than predicted from brief laboratory dissolution. Lack of an Al-OH infrared frequency from a feldspar surface is consistent with such a silanol-dominated surface. Raman spectra of altered patches on acid-leached albite correspond with amorphous silica rather than hydroxylated silica-feldspar, but natural feldspar may respond differently. The crystal structure of H-exchanged feldspar provides atomic positions for computer modeling of complex ideas for silica-terminated feldspar surfaces. Natural weathering also depends on swings of temperature and hydration, plus transport of particles, molecules, and ionic complexes by rain and wind. Soil formation might be enhanced by crushing granitic outcrops to generate new Al-rich surfaces favorable for chemical and biological weathering. Ornamental slabs used by architects and monumental masons might last longer by minimizing mechanical abrasion during sawing and polishing and by silicifying the surface. Silica-terminated feldspar might be a promising ceramic surface.",

            "abstractNote": "The colonisation of ornamental marble statues in the Boboli Gardens of Florence (Italy) by photosynthetic microorganisms was investigated. The green microalga Coccomyxa was the first colonizer of newly restored marble surfaces, appearing one year after the periodic cleaning and restoration of the statues. Two years after restoration this alga gave rise to very thin green biofilms, with densities reaching about 3 x 102 cells cm-2. Later, the biofilms were enriched by cyanobacterial forms, which became dominant. In about six years, a photosynthetic microbial community, amounting to about 3 x 104 cells cm-2, and structurally similar to that occurring on the unrestored statues was developed. This epilithic community showed a marked biodiversity; the main representative forms included Chroococcidiopsis, Leptolyngbya, Pleurocapsa, Coccomyxa and Apatococcus. Coccomyxa initiated the colonisation of the marble surfaces, favoured in this process by its facultative oligotrophic capacity and high cell surface hydrophobicity, combined with tolerance of high light intensity. The other investigated isolated strains did not show this set of features. The secretion of polysaccharidic substances and cell surface hydrophobicity enhancing the capacity to adhere, favoured permanent colonisation of the cyanobacterial population. Indeed, the majority of the cyanobacterial strains (90%), were shown to be surrounded by exopolysaccharidic envelops, which contributed to the formation of stable microbial biofilms, and possessed variable cell surface hydrophobicity.",

            "abstractNote": "The extn. of salts by layered (bentonite) and fibrous (sepiolite) clay poultices from stone materials currently used in Heritage buildings was studied. Analyses were performed on stones affected by salts but not submitted to humidity, and also on stones affected by salts and simultaneously submitted to continuous or intermittent humidity during the salt-extn. process. From the exptl. results and the statistical anal., the application of two successive poultices is sufficient for an efficient extn. of Cl- and NO3- in the absence of humidity. However, under humid conditions, the efficiency of the method is reduced considerably. For SO42-, the use of hydrotalcites (anionic clays) is recommended for more effective extn.",

            "abstractNote": "The surface of ornamental stone exposed to the air has normally experienced the process of weathering both due to the natural factors like rainfall, wind action, dairy temperature change and salt crystallization and due to the artificial factors like pollution and acid rainfall, This paper mainly focused on the investigation into the weathering state and durability of the ornamental stone exposed to different environments in Korea. In Seoul, pH of rain occasionally reaches 3.6, which is a possible cause of the chemical weathering of stone. In rural area, salt crystallization is the most powerful agent of stone decay. In this paper the influence of salt crystallization on stone durability has been clearly observed by the experimental results from both slake durability test and SEM images.",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the influence porosity and fissuration exert on the physico-mechanical properties and durability of nine Portuguese ornamental granites with different petrographical and physical characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allows the type of cracks (intergranular, intragranular and transgranular) to be identified. A microfracture index was calculated based on the collected data. This index is called linear crack density (LCD) and is defined by the number of cracks per length unit. The results reveal that intragranular cracks are the most frequent and represent between 62.9% and 82.3% of all the cracks observed. A physical weathering classification system based on linear crack density values of the studied granites is presented. The voids included in these types of rocks are predominantly microfractures and correlate closely with open porosity and linear crack density. Uniaxial compressive strength and P-wave velocity (VP) appear to decrease as linear crack density increases, albeit with low correlation coefficients. This may be due to the fact that linear crack density does not take into account possible preferential crack orientation and both properties are strongly dependent on this preferential orientation. Other textural characteristics, such as grain size and preferential orientation of certain minerals, may contribute to these low correlation coefficients. In ageing tests, the salt crystallization test demonstrated greater material loss in granites with higher linear crack densities and thermal shock testing proved that thermal cracks have a greater influence on VP in rocks with lower linear crack densities. In light of the ageing tests results, precaution is recommended when using granites with effective porosities greater than 3% as dimension stone out-of-doors in polluted continental or marine areas.",

            "abstractNote": "The two studied ornamental stones, 'Siklos-green' and 'Siklos-rose' are quarried in the Villany Mountains in South Hungary. The former one belongs to the Middle Triassic Zuhanya Limestone Formation while the latter one is a part of the Upper Jurassic Szarsomlyo Limestone Formation. Besides pinkish, yellow and white varieties of 'Siklos-rose' also exist. Zuhanya Limestone was formed in an outer ramp setting representing the deepest facies. Szarsomlyo Limestone contains pelagic fauna, microoncoids and peloids. The microoncoids were accumulated in a relatively shallow part of a drowned platform and were redeposited. The petrophysical tests showed that uniaxial compressive strength of both limestones was in the order of 80 MPa. It is easy to polish them and their polished surfaces are decorative. Both stones are used as inner wall or floor cover but due to its frost resistance 'Siklos-rose' is also applicable for outer surfaces. The byproduct of ornamental stone quarries are appropriate for aggregates. Better petrophysical properties of 'Siklos-rose' are attributed to the more homogeneous texture of the Jurassic limestone.",

            "abstractNote": "Although it has already been shown that calcareous stone can be consolidated by using a bacterially inoculated culture medium, a more user-friendly method is the in situ application of a sterile culture medium that is able to activate, among the microbial community of the stone, those bacteria with a potential for calcium carbonate precipitation. In order to test this new method for stone consolidation, non-sterilized decayed porous limestone was immersed in sterile nutritional media. Results were compared to those of the runs in which stone sterilized prior to the treatment was used. The effects of the microbial community on stone consolidation were determined by recording the evolution of the culture media chemistry. The treated stone was tested for mechanical resistance and porosity. Results demonstrate that the tested media were able to activate bacteria from the microbial community of the stone. As a consequence of the growth of these bacteria, an alkalinization occurred that resulted in calcium carbonate precipitation. The new precipitate was compatible with the substrate and consolidated the stone without pore plugging. Therefore, a good candidate to in situ consolidate decayed porous limestone is the application of a sterile culture medium with the characteristics specified in the present study.",

            "abstractNote": "When restoring historical buildings an important aspect is to obtain the original rocks in order to replace broken dimension stones these monuments were constructed of. Rheinland-Pfalz (federal state of Germany) holds a wide variety of natural stone deposits, mostly of sedimentary or magmatic origin. Whereas at the end of the 19th century presumably some thousand quarries were in operation, today there are left only 37 companies still producing 16 kinds of rock respectively varieties of rock. On one hand the availability of rocks is regulated by governmental requirements, integrating viewpoints of planning authority, conservation of nature, and water economy. On the other hand factors of private economy such as labour and machine costs as well as technical and geological aspects of the deposits influence the possibility to produce dimension stones. Last but not least public opinion plays a dominant role as people consider excavation works as a disturbing factor. Therefore unfortunately is to be expected that the production of dimension stones will continue to decrease in Rheinland-Pfalz as well as in the rest of Germany. This is also a result of globalisation. In future important domestic ornamental rocks will be no longer available.",

            "abstractNote": "An archaeometric study of the ornamental stones in the interior of the baroque church of San Pietro in Valle (Fano) has been carried out. On the basis of mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical studies, the areas of quarrying of 44†lithotypes are firstly established and a complete database of the location of the decorative marbles in the church was also provided. Both marbles from the Mediterranean region, used in the Roman and Byzantine period, and stones more typically found in baroque buildings were widely employed. Among the ornamental stones of local (Italian) provenance, a large number of lithotypes from the neighbourhood of Verona (Veneto Region, northern Italy) has been found. It is worthnoting that a fundamental role in choosing several marbles from Verona was played by Abbot Domenico Federici who arrived in Fano after he had been appointed secretary to the imperial embassy in Venice. Petrographic descriptions have been provided for Breccia di Brentonico, Lumachella di S.Vitale, Astracane di Verona and Nero Nube Conchigliato, which are four ornamental stones (never described in detail elsewhere) extensively quarried in the Venetian region. An isotope geochemistry study of the white marbles (Marmor Proconnesium and Marmor Lunense) has also been carried out. Most of the ornamental stones show severe and different forms of decay, and therefore, conservation work is strongly urged. Crystallisation of salts in the pores of the rocks is the main cause of the decay shown by most of the lithotypes. The soluble salts largely originate from (i) the rising damp which affects the outer walls of the church and subordinately from (ii) inappropriate works undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century when numerous marble slabs were re-attached with gypsum grouts. The high levels of relative humidity inside the church are not consistent with the most suitable conditions for the conservation of wall paintings and decorative stones.",

            "abstractNote": "Phosphonates were tested as potential crystallization inhibitors for sodium sulfate, one of the most damaging soluble salts in historic building and sculpture. Although mirabilite (Na2SO4∑10H 2O) crystallization is promoted in the presence of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), aminotris(methylenephosphonic acid) (ATMP), and diethylenetriaminepentakis(methylphosphonic acid) (DTPMP) at salt solution natural pH (6.4), crystallization is inhibited at moderately alkaline pH (8-8.5). Molecular modeling of additive adsorption on specific mirabilite (hkl) faces, in addition to ESEM observations, allowed us to identify how phosphonates inhibit mirabilite crystallization. ATMP and DTPMP display the best stereochemical matching with mirabilite {100} surfaces, which explains why they are the most effective inhibitors. Inhibition of sodium sulfate crystallization in the presence of phosphonates may promote the growth of efflorescence on porous ornamental stone, rather than damaging subefflorescence. The use of phosphonates may lead to more efficient preventive conservation of ornamental stone exposed to sodium sulfate damage. © 2006 American Chemical Society.",
