The paintings in the chapel depict the lives of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary and were created by a painter known as Giotto. The author compares the difference in security from the first time she visited. She wonders if the paintings being under glass vestibules are helping or hindering the art. Details are given for the author's views on art preservation.",

"abstractNote": "I t looks like something from another world — nothing like the classical statues and vases that fill the rest of the echoing hall. Three flat pieces of what looks like green, flaky pastry are supported in perspex cradles. Within each fragment, layers of something that was once metal have been squashed together, and are now covered in calcareous accretions and various corrosions, from the whitish tin oxide to the dark bluish green of copper chloride. This thing spent 2,000 years at the bottom of the sea before making it to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, and it shows. But it is the details that take my breath away. Beneath the powdery deposits, tiny cramped writing is visible along with a spiral scale; there are traces of gear-wheels edged with jagged teeth. Next to the fragments an X-ray shows some of the object’s internal workings. It looks just like the inside of a wristwatch. This is the Antikythera Mechanism. These fragments contain at least 30 interlocking gear-wheels, along with copious astronomi- cal inscriptions. Before its sojourn on the sea bed, it computed and displayed the movement of the Sun, the Moon and possibly the planets around Earth, and predicted the dates of future eclipses. It’s one of the most stunning artefacts we have from classical antiquity. No earlier geared mechanism of any sort has ever been found. Nothing close to its tech- nological sophistication appears again for well over a millennium, when astronomical clocks appear in medieval Europe. It stands as a strange exception, stripped of context, of ancestry, of descendants. Considering how remarkable it is, the Antikythera Mechanism has received com- paratively scant attention from archaeologists or historians of science and technology, and is largely unappreciated in the wider world. A virtual reconstruction of the device, pub- lished by Mike Edmunds and his colleagues in this week’s Nature (see page 587), may help to change that. With the help of pioneering three- dimensional images of the fragments’ innards, the authors present something close to a com- plete picture of how the device worked, which in turn hints at who might have been respon- sible for building it.",

"abstractNote": "The epidermis on the Parthenon sculptures refers to the orange-brown surface layer encountered on many Greek and Roman monuments, often called scialbatura, calcium oxalate film, patina, etc. Despite the open-ended debate on the origin of the epidermis, it delineates authentic surface because it preserves tangible evidence of ancient craftsmanship and, possibly, creative intent. Based on this premise, an analysis of the condition of the west frieze of the Parthenon was undertaken in 1992 before it was dismantled, based largely on photographic interpretation, which enabled the calculation of the rate of erosion during the twentieth century. The comparative photographic interpretation of geological characteristics and weathering patterns for Pentelic marble further serves to inform hypotheses on the progress of erosion. This same method was used to identify abrasion in terms of surface area incurred in 1937-38 on the Parthenon marbles in the British Museum, an intervention which has aroused great controversy in recent years. This paper documents that analysis.",

"abstractNote": "The ancient oasis city of Kashgar sits at the intersection of caravan routes that once made up the Silk Road. Located west of the Taklimakan Desert in western China, Kashgar has been able to survive due to efficient management of water reserves and maintenance of canals that irrigate crop fields and provide subsistence for local inhabitants. Water has a central role both in the organization of inhabited spaces (urban or rural) and in the distribution of domestic spaces. Indeed, the vernacular architecture of the city is particularly well adapted to the area’s hyperarid environment. Over the last 20 years, however, the city has undergone major urban development and reconstruction, a phenomenon that has threatened its architectural heritage. A digital method has been designed that makes it possible to record images of an architectural ensemble and thereby conserve a particular “culture of construction” that is endangered in Kashgar.",

"abstractNote": "The questions central to this issue of Built Environment concern conservation education and how, in facing the myriad challenges associated with conserving built heritage, practitioners and teachers can achieve the best results. This is the third issue of Built Environment to address the theme of conservation. The previous two, both edited by Peter J. Larkham, were Conservation in Western Planning Systems (vol. 23, no. 2, 1997) and Conservation: Experience outside the Industrialized West (vol. 25, no. 3, 1999). Both issues focused ‘on planning approaches and systems’; and both emphasized how ‘culture \\ldots is vital in shaping the character and appearance \\ldots of places’ (Larkham 1999, pp. 189–190). In this issue, we will also consider systems and cultures, but we will do so in the context of built heritage conservation education. If sustainable solutions regarding the conservation of built heritage are to be implemented, then it is critical to make conservation a set of activities based upon shared cultural values. Conservation is inherently a social and interpretive act, centred around the material creations of culture that refl ect memory, identity, lifestyles, and the relationships that people have to places. Conservation begins and ends with people. The meanings and value of our material culture change according to the memory and needs of society; sometimes those meanings and values are forgotten. Embedded within our built heritage are the markers of our technological, historical, and cultural evolution. These are the documents of our existence. It is for all of these reasons that the preservation of heritage is essential. Our task is manifold, that is to illuminate the BUILT ENVIRONMENT VOL 33 NO 3 past when it is forgotten or neglected and support it when it is celebrated. Conservation is a temporal bridge between past voices and present needs and future visions. This is a startlingly dynamic process of mediating collective and sometimes layered identities. Yet in the midst of this grand socio-cultural act we cannot forget that our professional point of departure is still the material creation; without the fabric there would be no interpretive act, no evidence, and no vessel for projected and invested values. Today the conservation profession includes a scientific methodology, a body of theory, ethical guidelines for practice, professional governing bodies, and international charters. Conservation extends beyond staid notions of the mechanical and artistic fixing of material artefacts and is rightly situated within the larger discourse of economic development, cultural preservation, and sustainability. Concomitant with this recognition and authority is responsibility, and conservation educators are confronted with responding to the ever growing demands and expectations of the field. The fundamental questions that arise in relation to conservation education are how do we impart the necessary skills and knowledge to young practitioners and what is that content? From these two questions follow others regarding professional profiles, legal responsibilities, university structures, cultural contexts, political frameworks, avail- able expertise, opportunities for education and training, and the legislation of base competencies. This is an admirable, albeit a gargantuan task.",

"abstractNote": "The stabilisation of the Tower of Pisa has been a very difficult challenge for geotechnical engineering. The Tower is founded on weak, highly compressible soils and its inclination has been increasing inexorably over the years to the point at which it was about to reach leaning instability. Any disturbance to the ground beneath the south side of the foundation is very dangerous; therefore the use of conventional geotechnical processes at the south side, such as underpinning, grouting etc., involved unacceptable risk. The internationally accepted conventions for the conservation and preservation of valuable historic buildings, of which the Pisa Tower is one of the best known and most treasured, require that their essential character should be preserved, with their history, craftsmanship and enigmas. Thus any intrusive intervention on the Tower had to be kept to an absolute minimum and permanent stabilisation schemes involving propping or visible support were unacceptable and in any case could have triggered the collapse of the fragile masonry. In 1990 the Italian Government appointed an International Committee for the safeguard and stabilisation of the Tower. It was conceived as a multidisciplinary body, whose members were experts in arts, restoration and materials, structural engineers and geotechnical engineers. After a careful consideration of a number of possible approaches, the Committee adopted a controlled removal of small volumes of soil from beneath the north side of the Tower foundation (underexcavation). This technique provided an ultra soft method of increasing the stability of the Tower, which is completely consistent with the requirement of architectural conservation. The paper reports the analyses and experimental investigations carried out to explore the applicability of the procedure for the stabilisation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. All the results having been satisfactory, the actual underexcavation of the monument was carried out in the years 1999-2001; the results obtained are presented and discussed.",
