Different recommendations have been issued by governments, broadcasters and blind associations aimed at regulating AD, and establishing a common quality standard, but they leave the issue of AD loudness largely unregulated. Regulations like EBU R128 aim at regulating loudness in behalf of the TV viewer, but no similar legislation exists for Audio description. This article deals with the concept of sound quality in audio description and suggests methods to objectively measure and control volume levels in TV broadcasted audio description. Modell und Methode, LIT, Berlin, 2014) characterises AD as ‘partial translation’, Braun (T 28: 302–313, 2016) hypothesises that what audio describers appear to ‘omit’ from their descriptions can normally be inferred by the audience, drawing on narrative cues from dialogue, mise-en-scène, kinesis, music or sound effects. The study reported in this paper tested this hypothesis using a corpus of material created during the H2020 MeMAD project. The MeMAD project aimed to improve access to audiovisual (AV) content through a combination of human and computer-based methods of description. One of the MeMAD workstreams addressed human approaches to describing visually salient cues. This included an analysis of the potential impact of omissions in AD, which is the focus of this paper. Using a corpus of approximately 500 audio described film extracts we identified the visual elements that can be considered essential for the construction of the filmic narrative and then performed a qualitative analysis of the corresponding audio descriptions to determine how these elements are verbally represented and whether any omitted elements could be inferred from other cues that are accessible to visually impaired audiences. We then identified the most likely source of these inferences and the conditions upon which retrieval could be predicated, preparing the ground for future reception studies to test our hypotheses with target audiences. In this paper, we discuss the methodology used to determine where omissions occur in the analysed audio descriptions, consider worked examples from the MeMAD500 film corpus, and outline the findings of our study namely that various strategies are relevant to inferring omitted information, including the use of proximal and distal contextual cues, and reliance on the application of common knowledge and iconic scenarios. Audio description is the verbal explanation of images or other elements which are difficult to grasp when it is not possible to access the visuals. We analysed the Italian and Spanish audio descriptions of three scenes from the drama film The King’s Speech (Hooper 2010). We focused on what types of verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs are used in the audio descriptions to talk about the characters’ emotions and disposition. We wanted to verify if the words used in the audio description scripts manage to reveal the hidden meanings expressed through images and sounds in each film scene. The model helped us to obtain initial results. We found that both the Spanish and Italian scripts prefer objective descriptions of the images, explaining the characters’ actions and reactions. At the same time, the Italian audio description tends to employ non-literal meanings, as shown by the use of some verbs in figurative senses and the inclusion of nouns that overtly refer to the character’s feelings. The study is dedicated to the confrontation of film aesthetics with audio description techniques to check how the knowledge of the former can contribute to audiodescritor training. Through action research, a short film adapted from a Mario de Andrade’s, a Brazilian writer, short story called O Peru de Natal (Christmas Turkey) was produced. The film as well as its audio description were carried out involving students and teachers from the discipline Intersemiotic Translation at the State University of Ceará. An audio film consists of the original audio track of the film and the audio description. This film description compensates for the video track of the film. It is therefore a purely auditory media text. Translation studies consider the work of audio descriptors as an intercodal translation process and as a part of audiovisual translation. Maher Tyfour examined the concrete implementation of audiodescription on a corpus of image translations for the Munich Tatort series. His focus was on the city's staging. By comparing them with the original video tracks of the feature films, he illustrates the intertextual relationship between original and translation. In the analysis he identifies the strategies of the audio descriptors that are partly unconsciously implemented in the translation process, explains them and discusses them in terms of text and translation studies. Maher Tyfour studied English at the University of Damascus (Syria) before coming to Germany in 2009. After completing his master's degree in Intercultural German Studies at the Georg-August University of Göttingen, he earned his doctorate at the University of Hildesheim.
