Many studies of teacher stress have focused on the dysfunctional strategies of individual teachers - in other words they have adopted a deficit approach to the problem with the focus firmly fixed on 'what's going wrong'. From this perspective, failure of some teachers to cope has generally been defined as a personal rather than an institutional weakness and the solutions that have been promoted have been largely palliative or therapeutic.\n\nThe study being reported in this paper adopted a different approach to the question of teacher stress and burn-out. Instead of asking 'what's going wrong' we asked why are some teachers able to cope successfully with the same kinds of stressors that appear to defeat others - in other words, we looked at 'what's going right'.\n\nWe interviewed 10 primary school teachers in hard-to-staff schools in disadvantaged areas. Using a screening device we had developed, principals identified teachers who were 'at risk of stress and burnout' but were 'persistently and successfully coping with stress' (i.e. 'resilient'). As the gap widens between the public’s expectations of education and the teachers ability to deliver that education, burnout will continue to be a concern. This study sought to determine the level of burnout experienced by agriculture teachers in three southeastern states using the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Educator’s Survey. The study found that agricultural teachers experience moderate levels of emotional exhaustion, low levels of depersonalization in relationships with students, colleagues and others, and a high degree of personal accomplishment in their work. An agriculture teacher’s gender, academic degree, field preparation method, and annual contract length do not seem to influence teachers’ responses on each of the sub-scales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory nor do the size of the school, the type of community, and the size of the agricultural education department. A questionnaire survey of 545 teachers in Maltese secondary schools revealed that some of the demographic characteristics of the sample were related to self-reported teacher stress, job satisfaction and career commitment.
