The implications of\nsuch technology have been and continue to become increasingly influential on how our\nsociety produces knowledge and creates innovation.\nThe field of engineering design has not been left out of such advances and continues to be\ndirectly affected by such shifts in economic and societal structures. As such, this defense\nwill look at the overarching effects that internet-based collaboration and knowledge\nsharing is having on the economy, society and most importantly tech industries; the goal\nbeing to draw insight and conclusions from fundamental shifts in these areas and how\nthey are applicable to engineering design and specifically design education. The implications of this technology have been and continue to become increasingly influential on the evolution of not just the sciences, but humanity as a whole. This paper will survey current successes that have been seen in open source software development and the emergent ‘open design’ realm. From here, parallels are drawn between the two disciplines to see how engineering design could benefit from the highly distributed nature that open source software has implemented. In this light, this paper will establish the position that engineering design must make to shift towards a more open and collaborative environment to stay relevant and prosper in the Information Age. Additionally, a basic web framework detailing the technologies needed to see such a shift occur will be outlined. Facilitated by a growing number of tools that allow for data and knowledge to be easily transferred, the technological landscape that organizations operate in is completely different than even a couple years ago. Specifically for engineering design, mainstream tools such as email, forums and wikis have been researched in both a professional sense as well as in design education. The following paper looks to build off these studies by identifying and studying the wide range of tools that engineering students utilize on their own accord to collaborate and progress towards finishing a design project. Specifically, mechanical and industrial engineering students enrolled in introductory design courses at Oregon State University and Humboldt State University were observed, interviewed and surveyed regarding these topics. The following will outline the findings from this study, with hopes that this work can help others in the design education field better understand and make better use of the tools that students prefer to use.
