            "abstractNote": "This chapter describes older women’s relationships to mobile telephony and the relationships they conduct through mobile telephony, comparing them to available international empirical evidence. Age and life course stages can be understood as socially constructed aspects of social identity that are neither static nor immutable properties of individuals. Departing from naturalizing discourses, some studies have focused on how age and particularly ageing intersect with power relations: old age brings with it a loss of authority and status. Personal networks play a role in the adoption of new information and communication technology-related practices and in learning processes, both in terms of support and in terms of expectations put on older individuals. The evolution of one’s personal network of social support and the evolution of the expectations placed upon the older person by this network. Phones are used within specific media ecologies and, beyond individual preferences, the entire communication strategy is shaped by available telecommunication services and the pricing system.",

            "abstractNote": "This study discusses the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially the Internet, in three Latin American capitals in people’s ability to attain the lifestyle they value and how inequalities in this ability or “information richness” can be explained by sociodemographic characteristics that do not depend on the individual’s decisions. The analysis is conducted using an Information Richness Index that includes information about the three barriers that people face in making significant use of the Internet: access to the Internet, skills for using ICTs, and the ability to function well in digital environments. Econometric estimations show that women, people who are not active in the workforce, and older adults, particularly senior citizens, have lower IRI levels, while each additional year of education and belonging to learning communities have a positive effect on the level a person achieves.",

            "abstractNote": "In 2006, European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS) published a special issue on mobile user behaviour. In that issue, scholars explored topics related to the rise of the mobile phenomenon at the time (Van der Heijden & Junglas, 2006). Since then, we have continued to witness the rapid global proliferation of mobile devices. There are now almost as many mobile phone subscriptions as there are people on earth, with 7 billion subscriptions expected to be active by the end of 2014 (International Telecommunication Union, 2014), compared with just 2.75 billion in 2006 (International Telecommunication Union, 2013). Mobile services are prevalent in affluent and less affluent societies. Hundreds of millions of users in developing countries access social media sites like Facebook and Twitter on their feature phones, and well over half the population in many developed countries now use smartphones (Ofcom, 2013). It is anticipated there will be 2.3 billion mobile broadband subscriptions by the end of the 2014, 55% of which will serve users in the developing world, often as their only broadband connection (International Telecommunication Union, 2014).             "abstractNote": "A current empirical study explores how Austrian women aged 60 to 70 use and ascribe meaning to ICTs such as television, radio, mobile phone, computer or the Internet. In the study, life-graphs, semi-structured interviews, and indoor walking interviews are used to examine the everyday usage and interpretation of ICTs by older women, coming from various social backgrounds and living in the Austrian region of Styria. Analysing empirical material of the study, this paper focuses on the interrelation of generation-specific media practices and individual (media) biographies as they both influence older women’s usage of and attitude towards ICTs. By using Maierhofer’s concept of “anocriticism” as a frame for the analysis of the material in addition to Mannheim’s idea of “generation location”, it becomes possible to elaborate on a more nuanced understanding of the relation between collective experiences within time and individual life-course perspectives in the context of ICTs.",

            "abstractNote": "Nossa  relação  com  as  tecnologias  digitais  passa  por  mudanças  no  decorrer  dos  anos,  mas  isso  não  se  deve  apenas  ao  fato de elas estarem em constante trans-formação. Os usos que fazemos das tecnologias di-gitais também se adaptam aos contextos pessoais, interesses  próprios,  habilidades  físicas  e  digitais  (Chirumamilla,  2014).  Por  esses  motivos,  as  práti-cas  comunicativas  digitais  de  pessoas  idosas  são  diferentes daquelas de gerações mais jovens (Givs-kov,  2017;  Rosales  &  Fernández-Ardèvol,  2016)  e  mudam ao longo das etapas da velhice (Fernández--Ardèvol, Sawchuk & Grenier, 2017). No entanto, sa-bemos muito pouco sobre isso. Em primeiro lugar, o interesse principal da indústria e da academia está voltado para crianças e adolescentes – definidores de  grande  parte  das  tendências  digitais.  Segundo,  não há dados sobre a adoção e o uso das tecnolo-gias digitais na velhice avançada, ou os dados sobre tal população não estão suficientemente desagre-gados (como observado em ITU, 2017). How people use digital technologies also depends on personal contexts, personal interests and physical and digital skills (Chirumamilla,  2014).             "abstractNote": "Se predice el impacto que tiene el Plan Ibirapitá ―en tanto política pública orientada a superar la divisoria digital― sobre la brecha gris que se constata entre las mujeres de 65 años o más en Uruguay. De acuerdo a este modelo, la divisoria digital representa la principal barrera para el uso de Internet  entre las mujeres de 65 años o más beneficiarias del Plan Ibirapitá. El mayor impacto individual entre las variables de la infraestructura tecnológica consideradas es el de la tableta Ibirapitá. Sin embargo, las predicciones del modelo indican que su incidencia sobre la probabilidad de uso de Internet está sujeta a la disponibilidad de conexión a Internet en el hogar.\n\nA su vez se confirmó la incidencia de la estructura del hogar y de la red familiar sobre la probabilidad de uso de Internet. La motivación de tener un hijo lejos, en el exterior, incide positivamente sobre la probabilidad de uso de Internet, al igual que la presencia de pareja en el hogar y la vida en un hogar unipersonal. No obstante, la presencia de hijos o de menores de 14 años en el hogar disminuye la probabilidad de uso de Internet. De hecho, a pesar de tener computadora e Internet en el hogar, cuando las mujeres de perfil promedio analizado conviven con menores de 14 años o con hijos en el hogar, no usan Internet. En dicho escenario sin divisoria digital, la brecha gris es superada con la tableta del Plan Ibirapitá.",

            "abstractNote": "Studies exploring digital technology in the context of leisure for older people tend to neglect their parallel use of traditional media. By simultaneous examination of both online and offline recreational media use, the present study explores media-based leisure repertoires and wellbeing among older Internet users. Data were collected via a survey of 10,527 Internet users aged 60 and up from seven countries (Austria, Canada, Denmark, Israel, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain). Analysis examined participants’ media use and differences among people with disparate use patterns. The study identified four groups of Internet users according to the media-based leisure activities they engaged in: innovative traditionalists, entertainment seekers, selective content consumers, and eclectic media users. The groups differed in their activity repertoires, background characteristics, and leisure preferences. Being an eclectic media user (i.e., relatively less selective) was significantly associated with lower life satisfaction. Results indicate an advantage to selectivity in media use for leisure and confirm that participation in certain activities may compensate somewhat for distressing conditions in old age. They also suggest diminished boundaries between offline and online leisure among older Internet users and call for further development of the functional approach to Internet use in later life.",

Particularly for men, curling has long fostered an important, gentler alternative to the intense bodily discipline, physicality, and aggression of other popular sports that instead values sociability, sportsmanship, and friendship. The contrast between professional men’s curling and other professional sports is particularly pronounced in Canada, where the public, the press and other culture-makers celebrate curling as an important national sport and link it, along with other winter sports, to a sense of what it means to be Canadian. However, while sports like men’s hockey connect a young, buff, and aggressive form of masculine style to a notion of national identity, curling offers one of the few opportunities for Canadian audiences to view the bodies of later-life men representing the nation as athletes, gold medalists, and markers of national pride on television and in other public media. Reflecting curling’s alternative masculine style and its connection to the bodies of old-(er) athletes, in 2006 a reporter for The Ottawa Sun celebrated a 50 year old Olympic curler with a headline reading, “No rockin’ chair for Russ: Forget the Viagra and Depends, Howard’s going for gold at age 50.” [...]",

            "abstractNote": "Dutch historian Johan Huizinga [1] viewed games as a fundamental aspect of life. As long ago as 1938, he observed that, next to “homo faber” (man the maker), there is also the concept of “homo ludens” (man the player). The aim of this paper is to explore what we can learn from previously conducted empirical studies about the motivation and capability of older adults to use exergames. We were guided by the following questions. To which extent: (1) Are older adults motivated to play exergames and why is this the case?, (2) Are older adults able to play exergames and why is this the case? and (3) Can the voices of the older players be heard in the empirical studies on exergaming in later life? We conducted a narrative literature review to gain insight, not only into the factors relating to older adults’ engaging in exergames, but also into the ways older adults themselves experience playing such games. To avoid a mainly functionalist perspective on play, we will also include hedonic aspects of playing exergames.",

            "abstractNote": "Digital games are frequently described as media that can be crucial in strengthening relationships, enhancing cognitive skills and providing social support. Although considerable empirical research on the use of digital games in youth and stereotypes on gender or ethnicity has been widely covered, there have been few studies on age stereotyping in the game context. In addition, this type of stereotype – game-ageism is likely to negatively affect age identity and intergroup communication amongst players, which could hinder to bridge the gap between different generations. Drawn on a literature review, this position paper introduces the concept of game-ageism as an age stereotype that is still set in our game culture. It also seeks to remedy this problem by suggesting an opposite ideological movement – age-gameism that refers to widening the audience of the game industry to all ages. In general, this paper offers a contribution in the field of media and society by highlighting the need for developing games for all ages, encouraging a positive age identity, enhancing intergroup communication and a heterogeneous game culture.",

            "abstractNote": "We analyze the relationships seniors have with mobile communications in two different European contexts, Romania and Catalonia. By means of a qualitative approach, we describe the ways older individuals incorporate mobile phones in everyday life communication practices, and the motivations supporting these decisions. To understand motivations for using a given communication device –as the mobile phone– we took into account the channels individual has access to; individual’s personal interest on using available devices in everyday communications; the location of the members of the individual’s personal network; and the pricing system that determines the cost of mediated communication.\n\nThe empirical analysis is based on two case studies conducted in Romania and in the metropolitan area of Barcelona (Catalonia) in different moments, between 2010 and 2012. Participants were 60 years old or over. Information was gathered by means of semi-structured interviews that were recorded and transcribed, while a common methodological design allows an enriched insight. Besides gender, we take into account heterogeneity of ageing for a more nuanced analysis.\n\nThis paper constitutes the first step in the exploration of common trends in the relationship seniors have with mobile communication in different European countries.",

PAR has been largely used in the area of technology creation and appropriation involving end-users in different stages of technology designing process. However, research studies concerning older people and their use of technology employ PAR to a lesser extent. In the current paper we provide arguments for the value of different participative action approaches when studying technology appropriation by older people, and present an example of a participatory action design that we have implemented in three Romanian cities, with people 60+, to reveal the way older adults depict their experience in using Facebook. We used a five-step collaborative research design – (1) initial evaluation; (2) training session; (3) immediate evaluation; (4) group co-creation; (5) final evaluation – to reflect on the participants’ experience through groups techniques and participant observation notes. Results reveal the fact that one trainer per each participant, adapting the interaction to the participant’s individual needs, intergenerational trainer-trainee communication and patience, as well as proper timing of the organized sessions are key factors to foster participant engagement with social media. In addition, the proposed participatory action design proved to have some potential to empower older people in long time engagement with social media.",

            "abstractNote": "How do women 60+ use and ascribe meaning to “new” and “old” information and communication technologies such as cell phones, the Internet, computers, TV, and radio? To investigate this question, life-graph discussions, walking interviews in small domestic spaces, and semi-structured interviews with Austrian women aged 60–70 have been conducted. The analysis of the material collected has shown that both generation-specific experiences of media usage and individual biographical backgrounds influence the use of and ascription of meaning to ICTs. However, ICT usage does not only reflect collective generational experiences and individual biographical circumstances. ICTs are also actively used by women 60+ to creatively shape their identities as women and older adults. Thus, this paper discusses processes and strategies of identity negotiations of women 60+ in the context of ICTs, and explores how everyday life interactions with ICTs can be interpreted as a means of resistance against normative assumptions such as ageist stereotypes.",

            "abstractNote": "This chapter analyzes game creation as a way to promote intergenerational participation, develop new learning opportunities, and help reduce generational segregation through the use of ICT. We start discussing the current societal challenges including digital ageism, digital access, and interaction (Sawchuk and Lafontaine 2015) among elders and the generation segregation (Thang 2011). We then introduce the activities developed within the Silver Gaming group in the Ageing + Communication + Technologies partnership project (http://www.actproject.ca) to advance our understanding of how applied research activities can contribute to the development of participatory game creation and different types of digital games (Romero and Loos 2015). Within the context of the ACT Silver Gaming activities, this chapter explores four instances that used game creation as an intergenerational participation activity. The first activity, held in a secondary school of the Québec City metropolitan area used making a game to bring together the life narrative of an older adult who had immigrated to Québec with secondary level students. The second and third occurrences were held during the Silver Gaming International Summer School (SGISS) in August, 2015, reuniting participants starting from secondary level students and adults from different ages groups. The fourth instance was a workshop held in September, 2015, at an intergenerational activity day at La Maison Léon-Provancher, a Québec city-based organization that is promoting biology, science, and technology to grade-school children and the community, including their parents and grandparents. We end the paper by discussing the limits and opportunities of the game creation as a way to promote, through creative uses of ICTs, intergenerational participation, and learning.",

            "abstractNote": "Despite ageist stereotypes about older people’s abilities to engage with information and communication technologies, grandparents are increasingly engaged with digital media. Grandmothers, in particular, are primarily responsible for using of web-based services to communicate with their children and grandchildren (Quadrello et al., 2005). Photos and news from children and grandchildren, especially grandbabies, act as important incentives for grandparents to go online. The purpose of the study, therefore, was to investigate how grandmothers use Facebook to facilitate family communication with children and grandchildren who move far away from home. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with grandmothers living in Romania and Canada, having a Facebook account and relevant family members (children or grandchildren) far from home. Three themes emerged from the data indicating: 1) the tendency to switch between different platforms to facilitate family communication; 2) the relative passive use of Facebook, focusing on photos and quotations as content that trigger emotions; 3) that Facebook usage is influenced by social norms around decency and privacy. Findings suggest that family relationships play a central role in grandmothers’ motivations and behaviours surrounding Facebook use.",

The superiority ascribed to masculinity in patriarchal thinking devalues “femininity,” despite attributing some positive characteristics to it. As ideological constructs, femininity and feminine values are historically and culturally specific and are variously inflected through other formations, such as class, race, sexuality, and age, that produce hierarchies between women.",

            "abstractNote": "This study aims to investigate the effects of illustrations in online cancer information on older cancer patients' website satisfaction (i.e. satisfaction with the attractiveness, comprehensibility and emotional support from the website) and recall of information. In an online experiment, 174 younger (<65 years) and older (≥65 years) colorectal cancer patients were randomly exposed to a webpage about transanal endoscopic microsurgery consisting of either text‐only information, text with two cognitive illustrations or text with two affective illustrations. In general, adding cognitive illustrations compared with text‐only information improved the satisfaction with the attractiveness of the website in both younger and older patients. For older patients in particular, cognitive illustrations facilitated recall of cancer information: whereas older patients recalled less information overall compared with younger patients (39% vs. 50%), no statistically significant differences in age on recall were observed when cognitive illustrations were added to text. Furthermore, older patients were more satisfied with the emotional support from the website than younger patients, especially when affective illustrations were present. Our results suggest that effective online cancer communication for ageing populations involves considering both cognitive and affective illustrations to enhance website satisfaction and recall of cancer information.",
