"abstractNote": "At Oregon State University, writing instructors and librarians collaboratively teach research writing and information literacy in first year composition courses. A four-week unit focuses on the connections between critical thinking, writing and learning, and information literacy. This article describes the process of developing, implementing, and refining this collaborative curriculum. By using assignments and texts that model a recursive critical research and writing process for students, librarians and writing instructors help students think more deeply and critically about their topics. "abstractNote": "Purpose: During Spring semester 2005, budgetary constraints, personnel reductions, and questions of efficacy challenged librarians at the University of Arizona to develop more integrated methods for assisting faculty, instructors, and students in teaching and learning information literacy skills. In order to meet this challenge, University of Arizona librarians collaborated with the University's English Composition Program to develop an instructor-led, librarian facilitated approach to integrating information literacy instruction into the English Composition curriculum. This was a natural fit because there are fundamental similarities between the educational goals of the English Composition Program and the outcomes espoused by the Association of College and Research Libraries Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The approach that the University of Arizona Library has developed is described in the following pages in the hopes that it can serve to assist librarians elsewhere in developing their own responses to similar challenges. Design/methodology/approach: A discussion of the development process as well as information gleaned from interviewing and surveying English composition instructors is presented. Findings: The development process of the approach is described in detail, and the overall efficacy of the approach is addressed. Practical implications: The approach to integrating information literacy skills into the University of Arizona English Composition Curriculum is presented in order to provide guidelines and practical assistance to librarians facing similar challenges. Originality/value: This paper describes and addresses the benefits and challenges of moving towards more blended forms of instruction and library information literacy skills integration. "abstractNote": "This article focuses on the use of portfolios for learning and professional development in Higher Education (HE). Recent research findings related to learning and assessment help to contextualize the study. The use of portfolios for summative assessment and development of teaching and reflective practice dominates the literature. What is lacking is research that provides insights into how a portfolio for learning can be used in HE to develop understanding into one’s own learning, assessment and professional practices. The action research findings related to portfolio use for learning purposes identified in the three case studies include: the importance of establishing the purpose of the portfolio; the impact of portfolio use on the approach to learning, to teaching and to professional development; the changes to professional practice brought about as a result of the learning; and the need to consider issues related to ethics and confidentiality.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, educators have begun to use learning portfolios as a means of evaluating student learning in higher education. Research indicates that learning portfolios can help students understand better the learning process as well as enhancing learning outcomes. They promote reflection on the learning experience and encourage students to think critically and make judgments about their own learning. The aim of this paper is to explore how short-answer portfolios can support the development of generic skills. We focus on generic skill because one of the central aims of university teaching is to develop the generic capabilities of graduates. These generic attributes represent the qualities, skills and understandings a university community anticipates its students should acquire at university and display as a graduate professional and citizen. This paper reports the findings of a study of learning portfolios and generic skill development of industrial relations students studying on-line at a remote location. The students completed a short-answer learning portfolio as part of their learning experience. Data were gathered about the performance and views of these students from interviews, a survey, analysis of student work and email correspondence with their teacher. Our research indicates that learning portfolios are an effective way of developing generic skills, although they are very labour intensive from the teacher's perspective. "abstractNote": "While composition programs are frequently responsible for teaching basic research writing, it is still common practice to limit lessons in information literacy to \"one-shot\" library instruction sessions. This practice reinforces the perception that the research process is separate from (and simpler than) the writing process, that teaching students effective research practices can be reduced to a single, skills-based class session, and that, ultimately, literacy in information is only useful if tied to the academic research paper. We argue that writing and information literacy are complimentary processes that need to be integrated into multiple, contextual classroom sessions. Through collaboration and shared responsibility, writing teachers and librarians can better incorporate information literacy instruction within composition programs and improve students' research options and behaviors. "abstractNote": "Despite the shared work of teaching research and writing, research librarians and compositionists (writing teachers) have not engaged regularly in dialogue about how they might collaborate in this endeavor. This project surveyed English teachers at three institutions, a private liberal arts college, a public liberal arts college, and a land grant university, concerning their perceptions of their students' information literacy skills, as well as about the variety of strategies they used to introduce and reinforce information literacy competency in their classrooms. These strategies ranged from assigning a research project with little classroom or library support, to using up to ten different research-related activities to build the research competencies to complete a project. The authors found that teachers who employed a variety of strategies for teaching information literacy competency were significantly more satisfied with their students' abilities to successfully complete researched projects. This paper reports on the results of this study begins a conversation about how these results might shape collaborations between librarians and first-year writing programs.
