"abstractNote": "Purpose — The paper aims to present a methodology for analyzing the pedagogical content of video games and to present the findings of one such analysis. Design/methodology/approach — The pedagogical analysis presented here consists of three parts — an introduction to the new media of video games, a method for analyzing video games, and lastly, the results of analyzing the pedagogical content of the video game Portal. Findings — The analysis uncovered significant pedagogical content and useful methodologies used in the design of the video game Portal. Practical implications — The pedagogies and design methods used in the game Portal can help librarians engage and educate students of the gaming generation in information literacy tasks. Originality/value — This paper provides a model for pedagogical analysis of the video game medium and practical techniques taken from an excellent representative of that medium. "abstractNote": "The potential of videoconferencing to enrich distance learning needs to be widely recognised as well as the technology embedded in curriculum delivery and in distance learning programmes. The argument is supported by reference to a wide range of case studies from the author's experiences over a period of six years as International Officer with the Western Education and Library Board in Northern Ireland, and to exemplars of good practice from other sources in different parts of the world. As videoconferencing becomes more widely available in schools and in public libraries, it is important that there is a new awareness of its vast potential in order to ensure that this technology is fully exploited for the benefit of learning communities.",

"abstractNote": "Videoconferencing systems combine face-to-face and mediated interactions in distance education. We extend the use of a Social Presence measure to on-site (face-to-face) learners and distant learners. Comparison between physically present and distant located learners did not indicate significant differences in social presence. Also results indicate that the predicted social presence score for distance instruction is slightly lower than for the on-site instruction for high nonverbal behavior while the reverse is true of low non verbal behaviors. Predicted social presence for face to face instruction is quite higher than for the distance instruction for the high verbal behaviors while the reverse is true of low verbal behaviors. It means that students' social presence is predicted to be higher in the face to face setting comparing to the videoconferencing course in both models. Additionally, when both nonverbal and verbal behaviors increase, the predicted social presence is facilitated, controlling for the grouping variable. In other words, instructors' nonverbal and verbal communication skills enhance learners' social presence in either environment. (Contain 4 tables and 2 figures.)",

"abstractNote": "The article discusses gaming ethos and what librarians can learn from people who regularly play video games. Among the positive characteristics of gamers are the tendencies to employ trial-and-error methods of problem solving, taking risks, seeking expertise from others, and flexibility and adaptability to change. These characteristics contrast with those of libraries, which the author argues tend to avoid risk, resist change and maintain the status quo. The author also addresses the elements necessary for implementing gaming programs and activities at libraries, which include an open-minded administration and patron input.",

"abstractNote": "Incorporating digital gaming into education is an increasingly popular topic in academia. Educators' views of digital gaming (e.g., computer, video, and online games) have shifted from categorizing these games as an entertaining, yet pedagogically void activity to a promising medium that engages students in the learning process. With over 70% of college students enthusiastically playing digital games, educators are tapping into digital gaming as an effective means to teach millennials problem solving and communication skills. This article investigates gamer characteristics, motivational and engaging aspects of digital games, and the parallels between gaming and the information retrieval process. The authors build on this information to present approaches to incorporate digital gaming techniques into the library classroom since it is not feasible for all libraries to create instructional digital games. Web site: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/JITE/\nAbstract: The advantages of video conferencing in educational institutions are well documented. Scholarly literature has indicated that videoconferencing technology reduces time and costs between remote locations, fill gaps in teaching services, increases training productivity, enables meetings that would not be possible due to prohibitive travel costs, and improves access to learning. However, there are few studies that analyze the effectiveness of videoconferencing from the student's perspective. Videoconferencing technology is often touted as a method to connect with previously inaccessible student populations, but does it adequately serve the needs of the students? This study aims to examine student perceptions regarding videoconferencing as an instructional delivery method. In order to adequately assess VC as a technique for classroom instruction, a student survey was prepared using questions from Free Assessment Summary Tool (FAST), a web-based student evaluation site developed by Ravelli and Patz (2000-2004) and Mount Royal College (http://www.getfast.ca). Eighty-six students responded to the survey. The results were compiled and statistically analyzed for the face-to-face (n = 30) and remote students (n = 56). Responses were also analyzed between the initial (first) and end-of-the semester (second) surveys. Overall, the student responses pertaining to the instructor's use of the VC technology and his personal teaching skills were positive. Over three quarters of the students understood that the reason for using the VC technology was to satisfy the demand for the course and utilize existing classroom space. A strong majority of students agreed that they were comfortable asking questions using the VC format, but the remote classroom responses were significantly different with regard to their comfort and perceptions of interactions with the instructor at the end of the semester. The author concludes that videoconferencing as a format for courses that have large amounts of technical content or visual demonstration is worth pursuing. Videoconferencing is closest to a face-to-face experience for students in remote locations.
