As in Hall and Jones (1999), we find that a 1% improvement in institutions (as we measure them) generates on average a 5% increase in output per worker. However, this relationship is not linear and the data have important heterogeneity. Countries with the same value of institutions have different levels of income per worker. We ask whether the “returns to institutions” are the same across countries conditional on the level of institutions. Using quantile regression methods, we show that for countries at the top of the conditional distribution of international incomes, the “returns to institutions” are lower (around 3.8%,) than for countries at the bottom of this distribution (around 6.2%). We show that this result is robust for different model specifications and definitions of institutions. We also provide evidence that, conditional on the level of institutional development, the distribution of output per worker tends to become less disperse as countries improve their institutional framework. In other words, having better institutions is essential in order to close the output-per-worker gap across countries. Using this new cross-country data on human capital inequality two main conclusions are obtained. First, most countries in the world have tended to reduce the inequality in human capital distribution. The network helps this group to increase communication, avoid isolation and loneliness and to age actively. Europe decided 2012 to be the Year of Active ageing. This paper presents a descriptive study of time series analysis carried out between 2004 and 2012 with the aim of knowing how the evolution in the level, motives and needs of the use of computers and Internet by elderly people in an environment of university training focused on health and life quality is. To obtain results a question paper is to be handed out to a sample of 419 people aged between 55 and 94 and taking part in the «Inter-university Programs of Experiences» from the University of Burgos. The obtained results match up with previous studies that pointed a noticeable increase in the use of the Internet (in frequency, number of users and resources) caused by elderly people's desire to keep active, up-to-date and communicated, as well as their need to continue their learning process through tools linked to the network. Specifically, this study concerns teenagers' cultural ways of interpreting the mobile phone and its uses, as they become part of their social world. Through their accounts and narratives about 'young people's use of the mobile phone', teenagers construct their specific cultural model of this communication technology: it is seen as a radically social performance. Insofar as it is conceived as such, the mobile phone (MP) becomes a detonator of social thinking: it provokes reflective thinking on the ethics, etiquette and aesthetics of everyday action and social life. Reflecting upon the forms of use of the mobile phone, teenagers also explore the identity-making processes involved in the presentation of oneself on a public scene. In other words, they interpret and make the uses of the MP work as a social grammar through which people are supposed to define themselves and those around them. In this sense, using an MP in a teenage-appropriate way is not a matter of technical competence; it requires larger communicative skills that are cultural knowledge of when, where, why and, moreover, how to use this technology. En el nuevo paradigma tecnológico, conocido como la Era de la Información, la relevancia de la red equivale a lo que fue el petróleo en la Era Industrial.\n \nSe puede disentir de la predicción hecha por Nicholas Negroponte en 1995, en su famoso libro “Ser Digital”, con respecto a que la brecha digital se traduciría en un asunto netamente generacional, expresada en la dicotomía: jóvenes-ricos vs viejos-pobres. No obstante, este autor (1995) acertaba en su teoría de la mayor facilidad de los jóvenes hacia las nuevas tecnología. En consecuencia, la Internet es dominada por gente joven.\n\nLa aparición de Wena Naty, un vídeo subido a la red (con el explicito consentimiento de sus protagonistas) en la cual una niña de 14 años le practica sexo oral a un compañero en una plaza pública, es la demostración más dramática del uso y abuso que los jóvenes chilenos hacen de las nuevas tecnologías. \n\nEl presente artículo revisa datos obtenidos sobre el uso de tecnologías en Chile (INJUV 2002, Godoy 2006 y PNUD 2006). Yet, as scholars have effectively demonstrated, social processes that are culturally and historically relative have a critical role in shaping our lived experiences. This paper will continue to build upon the examination of social construction through a unique analysis of the use of cellular phones by teenage girls that incorporates both the idealization of use presented in advertising images and the lived experiences of teenage girls. The functioning of three primary discourses will be outlined: the media discourse that emphasizes image and independence; the parental discourse that focuses upon danger and safety; and the youth discourse that highlights self-determination and sociability. Current advertising, it will be shown, is picking up on what adolescents today want: style, friendships, and individuality. For the young women interviewed, however, the desire for independence is mitigated by their parents’ rules, an acceptance that the public world is a dangerous place, and a desire to act as a responsible young woman. The cellular telephone thus exists at the intersection of these competing discourses of independence, safety and femininity. The significance of power in shaping the self is central to a new scholarship associated with Foucault. This body of work offers an important corrective to traditional sociological orientations associated with Mead and symbolic interactionism. The principle of reflexivity is at the core of the Meadian tradition and provides a pragmatic foundation for understanding agency and political action missing from much of the new scholarship. The principle of social construction is common to both new and traditional sociological approaches to the self and guides most recent empirical analyses. Promising avenues of research are evident in work that explores the sociological context of self-construction, the social resources employed in the construction process, and the growing importance of nonhuman objects in self-construction. Durante estas manifestaciones, Facebook fue una de las redes sociales en Internet más utilizadas por las organizaciones participantes. En el caso de la FECH, esta agrupación estudiantil usó Facebook principalmente para convocar a las acciones de protestas, para resaltar los logros del movimiento y para señalar quiénes eran sus adversarios. Sin embargo, la mayor parte del contenido publicado fue generado por los medios de comunicación tradicionales, demostrando que en el nivel comunicacional también se entrelazan las estrategias usuales de los movimientos sociales con las nuevas prácticas más innovadoras. Por lo tanto, se rechaza la visión del determinismo tecnológico, porque no da cuenta de los fenómenos complejos que caracterizan el desarrollo de los movimientos estudiantiles y juveniles.\nConsidering the relationship between new social media and youth political actions, the purpose of this article is to describe the use of Facebook during the 2011 Chilean student movement, through a content and textual analysis of Facebook’s page of the Student Federation of the University of Chile (FECH). In 2011, Chile experienced massive mobilizations for seven months. These were perhaps the most important social protests in Chile's recent history, where young people played a leading role in the discussion over education. During these events, Facebook was one of the digital social networks most widely used by the mobilized organizations. In FECH’s case, it utilized Facebook mainly to call for protest actions, to highlight the achievements of the movement, and to indicate their opponents. However, most of the content published on this Facebook page was produced by traditional media, demonstrating that conventional communication strategies of social movements are interrelated with new innovative practices. One hundred and twelve mobile phone owners reported on their use of their mobile phones, and completed the NEO-FFI and the Coopersmith self-esteem inventory. Extraverts reported spending more time calling, and changing ring tone and wallpaper, implying the use of the mobile phone as a means of stimulation. Extraverts and perhaps disagreeable individuals were less likely to value incoming calls. Disagreeable extraverts also reported using the mobile phone more, and spent more time adjusting ringtone/wallpaper. The neurotic, disagreeable, unconscientious and extroverted spent more time messaging using SMS. Although Inclusive Design\nhas traditionally focused on enabling people to live independently, it seems that there\nare benefits to be gained from promoting social interaction through design. This paper\ndetails the results of a study of older adults‟ experiences with technology, particularly\nduring the very early stages of interaction known as Out-of-Box Experience, from\nproduct acquisition through to first use. The Technology Biography method was adapted\nand conducted among twenty-four participants, grouped into 50-64 years old, 65-75\nyears old and over 76 years old. The findings indicate that even though older people\nvalue being able to perform tasks for themselves, they often enlist others as a means to\nengage in social interaction. By employing a logistic model of technological diffusion, this paper finds that 41 percent of the total population in selected Asian countries will eventually adopt mobile phone. Transition in the early nineties from analogue to digital technology and corresponding increase in capacity impacted on the diffusion of mobile telecommunications. Technological developments in this sector induced even single operators to reduce their prices to attract more adopters. I argue that the role of sound has been largely ignored in the literature on media and everyday life resulting in systematic distortions of the meanings attached to much everyday behaviour. Sound as opposed to vision becomes the site of investigation of everyday life in this article. In focusing thus, I draw upon a range of neglected texts in order to provide a dialectical account of auditory and technologically mediated experience that avoids reductive and dichotomous categories of explanation. I propose a new evaluation of the relational nature of auditory experience whereby users manage their cognition, interpersonal behaviour and social space. Though primarily designed to encourage the consumption of particular goods and services, advertisements also served to create, reinforce and intensify particular societal perceptions and cultural discourses surrounding the superiority (and thus desirability) of certain commodities, including different forms of transport and mobility. Through a content analysis of over 6,800 advertisements that appeared in one British weekly aeronautical newspaper, Aeroplane, between 8 June 1911 and 25 June 1914, this paper documents the changing nature of the aeronautical goods and services that were advertised during this period. It argues that, in addition to fulfilling a utilitarian commercial purpose, the advertisements served an important symbolic function. However, evidence shows that roughly 30 to 40 percent of individuals experience some level of computer anxiety. Many academic programs involve computing-intensive courses, but the actual effects of this exposure on computer anxiety are unknown. This study contributes to the literature as follows. First, direct evidence of a relationship between longitudinal changes in individuals' computer anxiety and performance are reported. Second, the effects of changes in computer anxiety are shown to be dependent on individuals' initial level of anxiety. Third, some evidence is provided that changes in computer anxiety from exposure to a computing-intensive environment are not uniform across individuals. Lastly, the subjects in this study appear to be more representative of contemporary students and workers than those used in prior studies. Implications for research and practice are presented.
