This paradigm offers mobile application companies the possibility to outsource their testing activities to crowdsourced testers (crowdtesters) who have various testing facilities and environments, as well as different levels of skills and expertise. With this so-called Crowdsourced Mobile Application Testing (CMAT), some of the well-recognized issues in testing mobile applications, such as multitude of mobile devices, fragmentation of device models, variety of OS versions, and omnifariousness of testing scenarios, could be mitigated. However, how effective is CMAT in practice? What are the challenges and issues presented by the process of applying CMAT? How can these issues and challenges be overcome and CMAT be improved? Although CMAT has attracted attention from both academia and industry, these questions have not been addressed or researched in depth based on a large-scale and real-life industrial study. Since June 2015, we have worked with Mooctest, Inc., a CMAT intermediary, on testing five real-life Android applications using their CMAT platform – Kikbug. Throughout the process, we have collected 1013 bug reports from 258 crowdtesters and found 247 bugs in total. Building a product in a startup is hard work.

\n

You pour your heart into getting your product out to market over countless late night caffeine-fuelled coding sessions. You go up against a tidal wave of challenges with the odds stacked against you.

\n

You risk your time and savings, hiring staff and building out the business, with nothing but the faith that no matter what is thrown at you, you will find a way to solve it.

\n

Then one day, Google’s faceless system flashes their robotic middle finger at you and spits on the 7 years you spent developing for Android.

\n

Now I know that, unless you are a large company with an army of lawyers, you are invisible to Google. Trip one of their automated alarms and one strike you’re out. There are no hearings. The faceless algorithms hand down their pre-programmed verdicts. All you can do is howl into the void of the automated machines.

Our problems began in the fall. We were almost ready to roll out new features for our app that we spent the past few months working on. In preparation for launch, we updated our Google play store listing, adding the word “Plus” to our app name to reflect the upcoming features.

\n

Automated app removals

\n

Shortly after, we received a notice from Google that our app had been removed from the US store because someone had filed a complaint alleging our revised app name infringed on their trademark.

We were shocked. The US is our primary market and our app had been on the app store for 7 years with a perfectly clean record.

\n

Examining the complaint, we learnt that it came from a China-based developer who publishes a number ad-ridden generic flash light type apps.

\n

More ludicrously, the trademark we were accused of infringing was different from our app name.

\n

Where are the humans?

\n

Our guess was that Google’s system received the complaint via a web form and automatically responded by removing us, without noticing that we weren’t using the trademarked name and that the complaint was at best flimsy.

Surely this was a simple mix up that any human would catch. We thought naively that this was a small hiccup we could resolve. We rolled back our app name as requested in the complaint as a sign of good faith and filed an appeal against the removal using the appropriate web form, describing the mix up as well as our remedial actions.

A boilerplate rejection. No acknowledgement that the trademarked name and our app name were different. No acknowledgement that we had rolled back our app name as requested in the complaint.

Had anyone looked at our appeal?

\n

It is painful to recall the exasperation we experienced. After the 7 years we dedicated to developing for Android, Google can’t take a second to acknowledge us.

\n

We reached out to everyone we could, including the individual who filed the complaint, but it was dead end after dead end.

\n

We concluded we were not going to be able to get through to a human decision maker without spending a bucket load of money on lawyers — money we did not have.

\n

Because of the way our app was integrated, relaunching as a different app was not viable. It would have the same as restarting from scratch and discarding the years of work we spent growing our user base and taking care of our community.

\n

We eventually gave up. We could not go on paying our staff without knowing if our app would ever be reinstated to the play store. It was the end of the road for us.

End of the line

Four months on, the update that our team had lovingly toiled on for months remains unlaunched. We had no choice but to lay off staff and to move into maintenance mode in preparation of the app’s eventual demise. My illusion that Google is a reliable partner has been shattered.

\n

By sharing my story, I hope that I can get some closure for the profound distress that Google’s callous actions have caused us. I also write this as a cautionary tale for everyone who puts their livelihood on the line in the play store.

We hope that the Google Play Team is moving in the right direction in solving the problems of developers!
Short:
On June 28, we received a letter stating that our account was completely blocked due to “Prior violations by this or associated accounts”.
For more than 2 years we have been publishing our games on Google Play from a single account. We did not create other accounts (including our employees), did not break the rules. Never received a single warning / deletion / block.
On July 9, we filed an appeal (until that time we had consultations with lawyers) with a detailed description of the restoration of our account.
On July 10, they received a “standard answer” (most likely from the bot) that the appeal was rejected and the account was not restored.
At the time of blocking, we counted 3 games (+2 in preparation for release), more than 500,000 downloads, DAUs over 10,000+ and a monthly in-app income of $ 5000 +.
Bottom line: more than 3 years of developing game projects, the work of a team of 10+ people was lost without explanation and at least some kind of human support from Google Play.
1. About the company
Our company HINMAX DEVELOPMENT LIMITED (registered in Hong Kong in 2013) has been developing games for mobile platforms since 2017.
The team has more than 10 developers and designers.
2. About account
In the same 2017, they created the only account on Google Play, which was used to publish games.
Neither we nor our employees have other accounts for publishing applications.
The main model for monetizing our applications is in-app purchases within games. We verified and confirmed the account to receive payments from Google Play since 2017. Payments from in-game purchases were received on our bank account HINMAX DEVELOPMENT LIMITED.
3. About blocking
The morning of June 28th shocked us with the news that our Developer account on Google Play was completely blocked. Those. not just some application removed, but the whole account with all the applications.

The letter indicated the reason:
Prior violations of the Developer Program Policies and Developer Distribution Agreement by this or associated accounts as outlined in previous emails sent to the registered email address (es) of the Publisher account (s).
The letter has perplexed us. What are the previous violations? Since the publication of the first game in 2017, we have not received a single warning / deletion / blocking of our games.
We carefully and implicitly comply with the Google Play Program Policies and Developer Distribution Agreement.
After consulting with lawyers, we filled out an application through a form where everything was described in detail, and received a response after 10 hours (it seems again from the bot):

Judging by the articles in the Medium by Pablo A. Martinez, all these answers are the automatic answer of Google bots. Google doesn’t do any human re-moderation or verification, but why?
We tried to contact Google Play Business Development managers on LinkedIn, including Purnima Kochikar and Lei Zhang (who is responsible for our region). But no answer has been received so far.
4. About our games
Wonder Island - Slots (June 2019 release)
An arcade adventure on the thematic islands in which you need to complete levels by completing quest tasks while playing virtual slots. Each new island opens up a new kind of slot for the player.
City of Secrets - Fool Online (release 2019, March)
A journey in which you need to complete levels by completing simple tasks playing the card game \"Fool\" against other players.
Fool Online (2017 release) is a popular online card game in Russia and the CIS. Implemented online games with other players, a system of tournaments for virtual chips.
5. The result. Google's attitude to developers
What do we have in the end?
The complete lack of human support from Google Play
Any developer on Google Play is not immune to blocking the “smart AI” of all their developments.
The Google Play Team talks so beautifully at all conferences how they help developers and come up with new development opportunities. In real life - nobody needs you.
We spent huge budgets on game development, promotion (Adwords) and attracting players. And so they started to earn income from Google Play (and Google takes 30% of this) and we face a blank wall with a complete lack of any support.
Why would you waste your energy and money developing games on Google Play, if in return you can get a letter in the morning and completely ignore it in the future?
We ask the community to support us as much as possible with likes / reposts / comments in order to draw the attention of the Google Play team to the current situation not only with us, but also with many other developers.
A campaign like Google can and should be closer to those who create content for Google Play, trying to implement new ideas for Android users and actually generating profit for Google.
At a minimum, developers should be able to communicate humanly with support, rather than standard bot replies.
