"abstractNote": "Individuals, institutions and organizations that are committed to the quality, long-term research productivity of academics need to view the post-tenure period as a critical turning point. Continuing to engage mid-career faculty in research when the immediate need for publication has decreased is one of the key issues that should be addressed to sustain and increase quality scholarship from within an institution. Reasons for faculty involvement in research are explored in this paper with particular attention to the tension between competing identities (teacher versus researcher; practioner versus researcher), an especially salient issue for female academics. Contextual factors and challenges that impact research longevity such as type of institution and teaching load are also explored. This paper concludes with a discussion of some ways to support mid-career researchers to increase the chances of their continued productivity.",

"abstractNote": "This is a fascinating book. Higher Education Review The Baby Boom generation did much to drive the transformation of American higher education that occurred in the 1960s. That extraordinary impact has invited many to think about how succeeding generations have challenged and will continue to challenge the assumptions and practices of educational institutions. This volume explores the significance of this generational perspective through observations from a variety of practitioners and observers of higher education. With stances ranging from unbridled enthusiasm to measured skepticism about the significance of generational change, these authors are sure to provide new insights to any thoughtful reader. Michael S. McPherson, President, The Spencer Foundation, US Our industry is extremely people intensive, so that understanding generational differences may be more important for us than for other industries. This book carefully portrays these generational differences and explores their implications for higher education. Catharine Bond Hill, President, Vassar College, US Generational Shockwaves is a must read for all of us in higher education who spend so much of our time working to enhance the educational and social success of our students as well as the scholarly and teaching success of our faculty. After reviewing this volume, no one can continue to support what too many in higher education still practice a one size fits all approach to the challenges we confront. Herman A. Berliner, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Hofstra University, US This volume offers a sort of cultural seismography of higher education in the early 21st century. This is the most comprehensive and thoughtful treatment I have seen of an inexorable and tectonic trend that will challenge the status quo in profound and unprecedented ways. David W. Leslie, Chancellor Professor of Education Emeritus, The College of William & Mary, US This volume, part of the TIAA-CREF Institute Series on Higher Education, is based on a national conference convened by the Institute in November 2007. The generational issues that were the focus of the conference raise both risks and opportunities with the potential to profoundly affect our cultural environment, both inside and outside academe. Baby Boomers, in their roles as students, parents, professors and administrators, transformed the American higher education system. As Boomers near retirement, Generation X and the Millennials are building on those contributions and making their own impacts. This volume sheds light on a current front-burner issue in higher education: managing the melding of generations, each with its unique needs and approaches to teaching and learning. The result of discussions among presidents, provosts, and other senior-level leaders from the higher education community, as well as the scholarship of leading academics, this lucid and engaging volume addresses intergenerational shifts and their wide-ranging implications for higher education including relevant risks and opportunities for consideration by campus leaders. The type of institution represented in these discussions ranges from small teaching-focused institutions to community colleges and large comprehensive research institutions. The authors offer senior leadership a deeper understanding of these generational challenges and opportunities and provide them with new and actionable information to enhance decision-making and inform strategic planning. They offer scholars new research questions to examine and provide insights to enhance effective reporting on higher education issues. Higher education presidents, chancellors, provosts, CFOs, faculty, researchers and policymakers will find this volume to be of significant value.",

"abstractNote": "PURPOSE\n\nAlthough numerous characteristics impact faculty research productivity, and although researchers have suggested comprehensive theoretical models to explain the relationship between these characteristics and levels of faculty research productivity, few studies have assessed these models. This study tests the ability of the Bland et al. (2002) model-based on individual, institutional, and leadership variables influencing faculty research productivity-to explain individual and group (department) research productivity within the context of a large medical school.\n\n\nMETHOD\n\nThis study used data from a University of Minnesota Medical School-Twin Cities vitality survey conducted in 2000 that had a response rate of 76% (n = 465 faculty). A statistical software package was used to conduct t tests, logistic regressions, and multiple regressions on these data.\n\n\nRESULTS\n\nThe validity of faculty, department, and leadership characteristics identified in the Bland et al. (2002) model were confirmed as necessary for high levels of research productivity. Faculty productivity was influenced more by individual and institutional characteristics; group productivity was more affected by institutional and leadership characteristics.\n\n\nCONCLUSION\n\nThe characteristics and groupings (individual, institutional, and leadership) in the Bland et al. (2002) model predict faculty research productivity. Research productivity is influenced by the interaction of the three broad groupings, and it is the dynamic interplay of individual and institutional characteristics, supplemented with effective leadership, that determines the productivity of individuals and departments.",

"abstractNote": "The movement of millions of sixty-somethings into a new phase in their working lives constitutes one of the most significant social trends in this country in nearly half a century. Encore describes the competing visions for work that are already lining up to capture the hearts and minds, and the time, of waves of baby boomers who are not content, or affluent enough, to spend their next twenty or thirty years on the golf course. Baby boomers are searching for a calling in the second half of life; they are moving beyond midlife yet refusing to phase out or fade away. If the old dream of the Golden Years was the Freedom from Work, the dream of this new wave is the Freedom to Work—in new ways, on new terms, to new ends. As their numbers begin to swell, these individuals hold the potential not only to transform work in America, but to create a society that balances the joys and responsibilities of contribution across the generations—in other words, one that works better for everyone.",

The search and analysis had two objectives: (1) to assemble information useful to colleges and universities; and (2) to assemble information helpful to individual academics. The study focused on programs within institutions that were specifically designed to increase early retirements or mid-career changes. Over 40 special-incentive early retirees were interviewed. It is concluded that institutions may find advantages to carrying out an increased-benefits early retirement plan; however, the effects of mid-career change programs are unclear. (MSE)",

It reveals that about half remain very happily active in teaching and research, though not always remunerated for it or recognised by their universities for their contributions. Unlike their North American counterparts, hardly any have celebratory rites of passage to emeritus status, or emeritus associations or centres that they can join. There was some disquiet amongst emeriti about their status and no university policy about using emeriti?s contributions, but generally England?s emeriti are healthily active, enjoying a wide range of activities and some contacts with their previous careers.\nThis study of emeritus professors at an English university aims to stimulate debate about their professional and leisure activities in retirement, how much use they make of their university?s facilities and how much use their universities make of them. "abstractNote": "While the number of mid-career faculty currently in U.S. higher education is significant, professional development programming that addresses the teaching and learning issues of this population has not been a priority. This article describes the Mid-Career Teaching Program (MCTP) and presents data that assesses its impact on participants' professional and personal lives. Survey and interview results indicate positive changes in teaching behaviors and knowledge as well as an increase in teaching satisfaction and confidence. Faculty also reported that MCTP renewed their energy and enthusiasm and positively impacted their life outside of the academy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",

"abstractNote": "A study in 1987-92 assessed the effects of changes in life course on work and careers. Interviews with 150 individuals who remained active or continued to work beyond age 65 showed lifetimes differing greatly from the traditional model. The combination of longer lifetimes and postponement of old age has created a new stage in adult life, a second middle age, and new opportunities. Almost half the group began their period of greatest creativity and productivity at about age 50. Some had three or more career peaks, at about 15-year intervals; others experienced a steady upward progression. None expected such a creative period at this age, but remained active because they enjoyed it. There was no single pattern to finding the most satisfying work; some began early in life and some much later. The study concluded that the urge to develop one's abilities is fundamentally biological, with a number of distinct patterns. This longevity revolution has revealed powerful contradictions in American attitudes about aging. In higher education the impact may be greater faculty persistence, or use of traditional retirement to pursue personal interests. Faculty longevity may come to be regarded as an asset. Continued faculty affiliation with an institution after retirement is recommended. (MSE)",

"abstractNote": "This paper explores the lack of vitality among community college mid-career faculty, arguing that this may be an even more severe problem at two-year colleges than at four-year institutions. Emphasis is placed on the role of community colleges and the institutional changes required to revitalize mid-career faculty. The problem of faculty vitality is examined in terms of the impending faculty shortage, symptoms of faculty burnout, measures of faculty vitality, and the specific nature of the problem of faculty vitality in the community college. Institutional causes of the problem are also examined with particular attention to the campus culture, the departmental climate, the influence of colleagues, faculty workload, changes in the student population, the tenure system, and the reward structure. Finally, solutions to the problem are suggested in terms of successful practices for revitalization which have been used in business and in institutions of higher education. These practices include individualized growth plans, career planning, faculty exchanges, faculty internships, sabbaticals, job variety, faculty development programs, post-tenure evaluations, and incentives and rewards. A brief conclusion offers some specific suggestions for ways community colleges can enhance the professional growth and vitality of mid-career faculty. (JMC)",
