Phosphorus-rich coastal waters and sediments are entrained along gyre convergence zones and moved into deeper waters, stimulating a ring of production. Cross-lake surveys (April 2001 and April 2006) with two separate profiling instruments (vertical Seabird CTD casts, horizontal Acrobat tows) uncovered columnar patterns for Chl a, temperature, and other variables (colored dissolved organic matter, transmissivity) consistent with a spatially complex, rotating gyre structure. Optical plankton counter transects, plankton net tows, and sonar documented that the spatial heterogeneity extends to higher levels of food webs (zooplankton). The horizontal and vertical patterns suggest a previously unrecognized coupling between late-winter storm-induced gyre formation, coastal water plus sediment capture, and deep-water productivity. The pulse may explain how certain zooplankton species characteristic of the Great Lakes can successfully overwinter through what was previously perceived as a very unproductive and resource-stressful period. than changes in mean conditions, have the greatest impact on the environment and human well-being. Here we examine changes in the occurrence of extremes in the timing of the annual formation and disappearance of lake ice in the Northern Hemisphere. Both changes in the mean condition and in variability around the mean condition can alter the probability of extreme events. Using long-term ice phenology data covering two periods 1855–6 to 2004–5 and 1905–6 to 2004–5 for a total of 75 lakes, we examined patterns in long-term trends and variability in the context of understanding the occurrence of extreme events. We also examined patterns in trends for a 30-year subset (1975–6 to 2004–5) of the 100-year data set. Trends for ice variables in the recent 30-year period were steeper than those in the 100- and 150-year periods, and trends in the 150-year period were steeper than in the 100-year period. Ranges of rates of change (days per decade) among time periods based on linear regression were 0.3−1.6 later for freeze, 0.5−1.9 earlier for breakup, and 0.7−4.3 shorter for duration. Mostly, standard deviation did not change, or it decreased in the 150-year and 100-year periods. During the recent 50-year period, standard deviation calculated in 10-year windows increased for all ice measures. For the 150-year and 100-year periods changes in the mean ice dates rather than changes in variability most strongly influenced the significant increases in the frequency of extreme lake ice events nitrogen (DIN = NH4+ and NO3–), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) were measured in Smith Lake, Alaska to assess their usefulness as proxies for the biological nitrogen cycling processes, nutrient concentration, and lake productivity. Large seasonal variations in δ15NH4+, δ15NO3– and δ15NPON occurred in response to different processes of nitrogen transformation that dominated a specific time period of the annual production cycle. In spring, 15N depletion in all three pools was closely related to the occurrences of a N2-fixing cyanobacterial bloom (Anabaena flos-aquae). In summer, δ15NPON increased as phytoplankton community shifted to use NH4+ and decreased as a brief N2-fixing bloom (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) occurred in August. In early and mid-winter, microbial nitrogen processes were dominated by nitrification that resulted in the largest isotope fractionation between NO3– and NH4+ in the annual cycle. This was followed by denitrification that led to the highest 15N enrichment in NO3–. A peak of NH4+ assimilation by phytoplankton along with the elevated δ15NPON and Chl a concentration occurred just before the ice break due to increased light penetration. The δ15NDON displayed little temporal and spatial variations. This suggests that the DON pool was not altered by biological transformations of nitrogen as the results of its large size and possibly refractory nature. There was a positive correlation between Chl a concentration and δ15NPON, and a negative correlation between NH4+ and δ15NPON, suggesting that δ15NPON is a useful proxy for nitrogen productivity and ammonium concentration. Nutrient patterns are compared and discussed in relation to temperature, primary production, and nutrient sources.In Lake Erie, due to the early onset of the phytoplankton spring bloom, nutrient concentration started to decrease much earlier than in Lake Ontario. The coupling to weather conditions and potentially influencing factors, such as water temperature, light conditions, and stratification were evaluated. During the warm period the ice cover period was considerably shorter and the ice breakup about one month earlier than in the cold period. The decrease in thickness and duration of snow cover resulted in considerably better light conditions during winter, favouring phytoplankton growth under the ice. The nitrate concentrations were much lower in late winter during the warm period. There were elevated phosphate and ammonium concentrations in the hypolimnion during August.
