"abstractNote": "In the 1990s, the term “online” research emerged as a new and vibrant suite of methods, focused on exploitation of sources not collected by traditional social science methods. Today, at least one part of the research life cycle is likely to be carried out “online,” from data collection through to publishing. In this article, we seek to understand emergent modes of doing and reporting qualitative research “online.” With a greater freedom now to term oneself a “researcher,” what opportunities and problems do working with online data sources bring? We explore implications of emerging requirements to submit supporting data for social science journal articles and question whether these demands might disrupt the very nature of and identity of qualitative research. Finally, we examine more recent forms of publishing and communicating research that support outputs where data play an integral role in elucidating context and enhancing the reading experience.",

"abstractNote": "With the proliferation of mobile network, mobile devices, and Web of things, many industries, including government departments, private firms, and research communities, offer more transparency through releasing data. The resultant effort offers a new paradigm—open data—still at infancy stage. Despite the rising research initiatives explaining its benefits and challenges and demonstrating policy conception and project details, no systematic survey of extant literature on open data has been performed. Hence, there is need for studies that examine open data on a holistic canvas, assess the current status of research, and propose future directions. Here, we conduct a review of extant literature to ascertain the current state of research on open data, and present an extensive exploration for 11 types of analyses: contexts, perspectives, level of analysis, research methods, the drivers, benefits, barriers, theory/model development, the most productive journals, authors, and institutions. Additionally, we present several future research agendas. This study also explains the implications to assist researchers, policymakers, and journal editors.",

"abstractNote": "Background: Big Data and Open Data are concepts that have evolved over the years and have different applications in health, from facilitating surveillance and preventing disease to fostering behavioral changes. Objectives: This exploratory study has two objectives: 1) To provide understanding about the use of Big Data and Open Data in the health arena and 2) to characterize the discussion, social behavior, interest and information shared in social networks and other online sources about Big Data and Open Data in health. Methods: Keywords related to “Health Big Data” and “Health Open Data” were used to gather data from social networks and from scientific databases. A qualitative based analysis was conducted upon a randomly selected subset of tweets, a list of comments in selected Facebook posts, a group of Instagram photographs and a list of selected LinkedIn posts. Trends in searches and publications were determined for Google Trends and the three scientific paper databases. Results: Majority of tweets are apps, the Cloud, consumers, costs, hackers, homecare, interoperability, mining, mobile, monitoring, openness, physicians, privacy, quality, research, safety, sensors, social media, startups, storage and wearables. Comments in selected Facebook posts showed mistrust toward any social network site involved in health. Users blamed companies for health security problems. On Instagram highly visual graphs and charts are the most common types of posts, followed by photographs of events related to data and health. LinkedIn posts including both Big Data and health count for more than 50,000 for “all time periods” and more than 3,000 for a period of “one week to one month”. The most common topics for the first 20 results sorted by relevance were: partnerships, use of Big Data in health, health Big Data analytics, and Big Data trends. Google Trends showed that searches including health Big Data and health Open Data have increased steadily since 2012. For the three scientific paper databases, there seemed to be a greater increase in publications regarding Big Data than for Open Data. Conclusions: An integrated analysis of social tools and scientific databases can provide valuable insights into people’s perceptions on innovative applications in health. Our results suggest that while interest in Big Data is increasing rapidly, there are growing concerns about data leakage and the ability of providers and governments to assure privacy. For Open Data in health, the increase in interest is not as large as that of Big Data in health.",

"abstractNote": "As web-based open data sources become increasingly accessible and rich, translating and repurposing this data towards an educational goal is a topic of interest. Significant challenges exist in taking this data and translating it to a form meaningful, relevant, and engaging to the learner, addressing the gap between information, knowledge, and understanding. Games provide a key medium through which this may be achieved, though limited evidence exists as regards the best techniques, both pedagogical and technological, by which data can be translated to engaging and educational material. In this paper, we describe the approach adopted by a serious game supporting the development of healthy lifestyles amongst adolescents. The game itself places the player as a survivor in a post-apocalyptic scenario, tasked with survival and exploration. Utilising the United States Department of Agriculture's open data on nutritional information, four different mini-games are implemented in the form of two quiz-based approaches, a puzzle, and a system directly connected to wider game mechanics as a “crafting” system. We discuss the design rationale behind these games and their differences, and present the outcomes of usability testing showing some insight into the various techniques. Our discussion contributes to the theory of how common game mechanics might best be applied to open data to provide effective and engaging educational experiences.",

"abstractNote": "Poor provision of information and communication technologies in low/middle-income countries represents a concern for promoting open data. This is often framed as a ‘digital divide’ and addressed through initiatives that increase the availability of information and communication technologies to researchers based in low-resourced environments, as well as the amount of resources freely accessible online. Using qualitative empirical data from a study of lab-based research in Africa we highlight the limitations of this framing and emphasize the range of additional factors necessary to effectively utilize data available online. We adapt Sen’s ‘capabilities approach’ to highlight the distinction between simply making resources available, and fostering researchers’ ability to use them. This provides an alternative orientation that highlights the persistence of deep inequalities within the seemingly egalitarian-inspired open data landscape. We propose that the extent and manner of future data sharing will hinge on the ability to respond to the heterogeneity of research environments.",

"abstractNote": "In the United States, there is mounting political pressure on public agencies to publish internal data. But transparency policy innovation brings a unique set of legal and normative challenges regarding how sensitive information will be used. It is therefore an open question as to what legal-normative conditions favour innovation. Are there specific kinds of laws, rules, or normative conditions that are related to adoption of new, potentially risky, transparency policies? In this article, qualitative comparative analysis with secondary data from multiple sources is used to find out what configurations of conditions are associated with open data use in 122 police departments. Results show three different paths to innovation among police departments: mandate driven, city-stakeholder convergence, and network learning. The findings are examined and developed through interviews with experts from a national police transparency initiative.",
