"note": "The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between students' conceptions of the nature of science and their reactions to evidence that challenged their beliefs about socio-scientific issues. The study used 248 students from 9th and 10th grade general science classes, 11th and 12th grade honors biology, honors science, and physics classes, and senior level college preservice science education classes. Students responded to questions aimed at revealing their epistemological views of the nature of science and their belief convictions on selected socio-scientific issues. A smaller sub-set of students was selected based on varying degrees of belief convictions about the socio-scientific issues and selected students paired to discuss their reasoning related to those issues while being exposed to anomalous data and information from each other and in response to epistemological probes of an interviewer. A qualitative design that entailed the derivation of taxonomic categories through discourse analysis utilizing samples of fallacious reasoning, conceptions of science, and sample performance of thought as a result of dialogic interaction was utilized. Additionally, appropriate nonparametric tests were performed to examine whether paired discourse resulted in changing belief convictions. By engaging students in discourse on socio-scientific issues, this study was aimed at elucidating how students' conceptions of the nature of science are reflected in their dialogic reasoning on moral and ethical issues. Taxonomic categories and samples of thought are presented and discussed, and implications for science education are addressed. (Contains 31 references.) (Author/ASK)",

"abstractNote": "This study investigates student conceptualizations of the nature of science (NOS) and how students interpret and evaluate conflicting evidence regarding a socioscientific issue. Eighty-four high school students participated in the study by reading contradictory reports about the status of global warming and responding to questions designed to elicit ideas pertinent to the research goals. A subsample of 30 students was interviewed in order to triangulate data from the written responses. Data were analyzed using a qualitative methodological approach. The participants displayed a range of views on three distinct aspects of NOS: empiricism, tentativeness, and social embeddedness. Findings indicate that interpretation and evaluation of conflicting evidence in a socioscientific context is influenced by a variety of factors related to NOS such as data interpretation and social interactions including individuals' own articulation of personal beliefs and scientific knowledge. Implications for science teaching and learning are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract The question of what students gain by engaging in socioscientific inquiry is addressed in two ways. First, relevant literature\nis surveyed to build the case that socioscientific issues (SSI) can serve as useful contexts for teaching and learning science\ncontent. Studies are reviewed which document student gains in discipline specific content knowledge as well as understandings\nof the nature of science. SSI are also positioned as vehicles for addressing citizenship education within science classrooms.\nAlthough the promotion of citizenship goals seems widely advocated, the specifics of how this may be accomplished remain underdeveloped.\nTo address this issue, we introduce socioscientific reasoning as a construct which captures a suite of practices fundamental to the negotiation of SSI. In the second phase of the project,\ninterviews with 24 middle school students from classes engaged in socioscientific inquiry serve as the basis for the development\nof an emergent rubric for socioscientific reasoning. Variation in practices demonstrated by this sample are explored and implications\ndrawn for advancing socioscientific reasoning as an educationally meaningful and assessable construct.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract This paper provides a critical analysis of some of the issues raised in Simonneaux and Simonneaux’s analysis of socioscientific\nreasoning among a group of university level students negotiating three socioscientific issues. I first discuss the labels\nused to reference approaches in science education that prioritize socially relevant issues and the science related to these\nissues. I draw distinctions between approaches labeled science-technology-society (STS), the socioscientific issues framework,\nand les questions socialement vives (socially acute questions), which Simonneaux and Simonneaux introduce. Next, I discuss ways in which Simonneaux and Simonneaux’s\nuse socioscientific reasoning as an analytic construct varies with respect to its initial conceptualization. The primary distinctions\ninclude linguistic inconsistencies and the conceptual differences these language choices confer, expansion of the construct\nto subsume a broader range of practices, and issues related to unit of analysis (i.e., applying socioscientific reasoning\nas an analytic resource for assessing individual practice vs. group patterns). Finally, the issue of transfer of socioscientific\nreasoning is addressed. When considering the extent to which and how students leverage experiences and practice relative to\nthe exploration of one socioscientific issue to inform their negotiation of another, I suggest that researchers and practitioners\nconsider the distinction between the content of arguments advanced and underlying reasoning patterns. The tension between\nembedding science in meaningful, specific contexts and promoting forms of scientific literacy applicable to diverse, socially-relevant\nissues emerges as an important point of emphasis for educators interested in the socioscientific issues (or socially acute\nquestions) movement.",

"abstractNote": "Socioscientific issues encompass social dilemmas with conceptual or technological links to science. The process of resolving these issues is best characterized by informal reasoning which describes the generation and evaluation of positions in response to complex situations. This article presents a critical review of research related to informal reasoning regarding socioscientific issues. The findings reviewed address (a) socioscientific argumentation; (b) relationships between nature of science conceptualizations and socioscientific decision making; (c) the evaluation of information pertaining to socioscientific issues, including student ideas about what counts as evidence; and (d) the influence of an individual's conceptual understanding on his or her informal reasoning. This synthesis of the current state of socioscientific issue research provides a comprehensive framework from which future research can be motivated and decisions about the design and implementation of socioscientific curricula can be made. The implications for future research and classroom applications are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Res Sci Teach 41: 513-536, 2004",

"abstractNote": "The need for the inclusion of socio-scientific issues (SSI) into science curricula has been generally accepted, but relatively few science teachers have incorporated SSI into their courses. Most science teachers feel that their most important task by far is to teach the principles of science, and any substantive pedagogical changes represent a burden. Reformers and researchers often point out science teachers' lukewarm reactions to the reforms as a major barrier for educational changes but pay little attention to teachers' deeper values and inspirations. However, there are some teachers who address SSI out of their own personal initiative. Detailed case studies of four such teachers showed that although the teachers were aware of Science, Technology, Society or other reform efforts, they developed their own thrust and materials for SSI based on their own values, ideals, philosophies and personal concerns. This suggests that the current curriculum reforms (Science, Technology, Society, SSI, and Nature of Science) tend to suggest theoretical ideals, but do not effectively connect with teachers' deeper values and ideals.",
