"abstractNote": "An unknown correspondent, possibly Native Teachers Paora Nikahere or Rihara Taki, writes to Colenso in early April 1852 about difficulties with an unknown couple. The phrase “Hamuera is not lost” suggests that the couple in question may be Hamuera and Ripeka te Nehu, Colenso’s house servants (and the mother and step-father of his child), who had run away from Colenso’s station in February, for not the first time, and attempted to take the child with them. The letter states that the correspondent has tired of the disputes surrounding the couple and discusses their return to Colenso, or the possibility of him travelling to see them. Colenso’s journal notes on 23/4/1852 that Rihara Taki brought Hamuera back to him that day, suggesting Rihara as the author of the letter. As the letter is addressed from Patangata, it’s also possible that the author was Paora Nikahere, the Native Teacher sequestered there.\n.\nFrom Christopher Parr's collection of letters to Colenso, many from Colenso's 'Māori teachers', lay workers for the church around Colenso's parish, writing to Colenso on various matters. Handwritten in Te Reo Māori.",
