This paper presents selected results based on the tools from 2 widely used vendors for bibliometrics: Thomson Reuters and Elsevier.\n\n\nResults\nBoth vendors located a high percentage of publications within their proprietary databases (>90%) and provided similar but not equivalent bibliometrics for estimating productivity (number of publications) and influence (citation rates, percentage of papers in the top 10% of citations, observed citations relative to expected citations). A recently available bibliometric from the National Institutes of Health Office of Portfolio Analysis, examined after the initial analysis, showed tremendous potential for use in the CTSA However, there is much debate within universities and national funding organizations (such as the National Institutes of Health in the United States, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and the United Kingdom Research Assessment Exercise) about how best to evaluate and weigh the impact of different types of research.1 The bibliometric approach analyzes citation frequency and is the most popular method for judging the scientific impact of a study or an investigator.2 Although citation counts reflect the degree to which a study generates scientific discussion, they have many limitations as a metric,3 and it is unclear whether they reflect the quality and clinical importance of a study. Indeed, the findings of even highly cited articles are sometimes later proven to be incorrect.4\n\nEditorial see p 947\n\nBecause there is a paucity of evidence exploring the clinical import of published research studies, we conducted the present study to examine whether citation counts can serve as a reasonable proxy for this. We used bibliometric analyses to identify the most highly cited articles for several cardiovascular interventions and then compared this list with a list of landmark studies for each intervention that had been generated independently by content experts. Securing funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is considered prestigious in the field of psychiatry. It is unknown if NIMH takes into consideration the author's h-index during the grant review process. The goal of this study was to determine the correlation between a principal investigator's (PI's) h-index and the NIMH funding.\nMETHOD: Correlational analysis was conducted on publicly available 2012 NIMH funding data to assess the relationship between NIMH funding and a PI's h-index. A simple linear regression was calculated to predict the h-index based on the amount of funding offered to the PI.\nRESULTS: A total of 139 PIs and their corresponding h-index and NIMH funding (direct, indirect, and total cost) were included. A strong correlation was found between h-index and NIMH funding: direct cost (r = 0.632, p < 0.001); indirect cost (r = 0.570, p < 0.001); and total cost (r = 0.639, p < 0.001). Total funding significantly predicted h-index, β = 0.821, t (2.599), p < 0.01, and explained a significant proportion of variance in h-index, R (2) = 0.410, F (3, 119) = 27.59, p < 0.001.\nCONCLUSION: A strong relationship was seen between h-index and securing NIMH funding.
