            "abstractNote": "OBJECTIVES Risk stratification in cardiac surgery is uniquely detailed, led latterly by the EuroSCORE and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) risk calculators. The recently published EuroSCORE II (ES2) algorithms update estimated mortality in a broad spectrum of cardiac procedures. The 2008 STS tool, in comparison, predicts multiple outcomes for specific procedures. We sought to identify and compare the external validity of both contemporaneous tools in our population.\nMETHODS Data from our hospital database were collated for the period February 2001 to March 2010. Logistic regression coefficients from the risk calculations were applied to the data and the results presented as receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Statistical analyses were performed using the area under the ROC curve (AUROC) and the Hosmer–Lemeshow (H-L) goodness-of-fit test, with comparisons using the DeLong method.\nRESULTS A total of 15 497 procedures were identified, of which 14 432 were appropriate for STS risk scoring (i.e. valve and/or graft procedures with no tricuspid valve operations etc.). For all procedures, ES2 and STS were equivalent (AUROC 0.818 vs 0.805, respectively, P = 0.343). For procedures appropriate for STS risk scoring, results were similar (AUROC ES2 vs STS, 0.816 vs 0.810, P = 0.714), whereas for procedures excluded by STS, the result was marginally worse (AUROC ES2 vs STS, 0.773 vs 0.784, P = 0.751). Goodness of fit in all cases was poor, primarily where risk was higher than 15% (H-L P < 0.0001).\nCONCLUSIONS EuroSCORE II and STS both provide equivalent discrimination in predicting mortality in a British population, including those undergoing procedures for which the STS does not normally predict. Accounting for decile-grouped Hosmer–Lemeshow tests not being ideal for the assessment of calibration, both tools show good calibration for patients with low to moderate risk, with divergence from ∼15% predicted risk.",

            "abstractNote": "We explored the detection of genome-wide hypomethylation in plasma using shotgun massively parallel bisulfite sequencing as a marker for cancer. Tumor-associated copy number aberrations (CNAs) could also be observed from the bisulfite DNA sequencing data. Hypomethylation and CNAs were detected in the plasma DNA of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, smooth muscle sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumor. For the detection of nonmetastatic cancer cases, plasma hypomethylation gave a sensitivity and specificity of 74% and 94%, respectively, when a mean of 93 million reads per case were obtained. Reducing the sequencing depth to 10 million reads per case was found to have no adverse effect on the sensitivity and specificity for cancer detection, giving respective figures of 68% and 94%. This characteristic thus indicates that analysis of plasma hypomethylation by this sequencing-based method may be a relatively cost-effective approach for cancer detection. We also demonstrated that plasma hypomethylation had utility for monitoring hepatocellular carcinoma patients following tumor resection and for detecting residual disease. Plasma hypomethylation can be combined with plasma CNA analysis for further enhancement of the detection sensitivity or specificity using different diagnostic algorithms. Using the detection of at least one type of aberration to define an abnormality, a sensitivity of 87% could be achieved with a specificity of 88%. These developments have thus expanded the applications of plasma DNA analysis for cancer detection and monitoring.",

            "abstractNote": "Infiltrating stromal and immune cells form the major fraction of normal cells in tumour tissue and not only perturb the tumour signal in molecular studies but also have an important role in cancer biology. Here we describe ‘Estimation of STromal and Immune cells in MAlignant Tumours using Expression data’ (ESTIMATE)—a method that uses gene expression signatures to infer the fraction of stromal and immune cells in tumour samples. ESTIMATE scores correlate with DNA copy number-based tumour purity across samples from 11 different tumour types, profiled on Agilent, Affymetrix platforms or based on RNA sequencing and available through The Cancer Genome Atlas. The prediction accuracy is further corroborated using 3,809 transcriptional profiles available elsewhere in the public domain. The ESTIMATE method allows consideration of tumour-associated normal cells in genomic and transcriptomic studies. An R-library is available on https://sourceforge.net/projects/estimateproject/.",

            "abstractNote": "Author SummarySmall drug molecules usually bind to unintended off-targets, leading to unexpected drug responses such as side effects or drug repositioning opportunities. Thus, identifying unintended drug-target interactions (DTI) is particularly required for understanding complicated drug actions. It remains expensive nowadays to experimentally determine DTI, so various computational methods are developed. In this study, we initiatively demonstrated that target binding is directly correlated with drug induced genomic expression profiles in Connectivity Map (CMap). By improving data quality of CMap, we illustrated three important facts: (1) Drugs binding to common targets show higher gene-expression similarity than random compounds, indicating that upstream ligand binding could be characterized by downstream gene-expression change. (2) It is found that some targets are better characterized by CMap than others. To guarantee efficiency of DTI discovery, prediction models should be specifically built for those well characterized targets. (3) It is broadly observed in the predicted DTI that ligands for the same target may collectively interact with common off-target. This observation is consistent with published experimental evidence and can help illustrate the mechanisms of unexplained drug reactions. Based on CMap, our work established an efficient pipeline of identifying potential DTI. By extending the success in CMap to other genomic data sources, we believe more DTI would be discovered.",

            "abstractNote": "Background: Measuring impairments in “instrumental activities of daily living” (IADL) is important in dementia, but challenging due to the lack of reliable and valid instruments. We recently developed the Amsterdam Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (A-IADL-Q; note 1). We aim to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of the A-IADL-Q for dementia in a memory clinic setting.\nMethods: Patients visiting the Alzheimer Center of the VU University Medical Center with their informants between 2009 and 2011 were included (N = 278). Diagnoses were established in a multidisciplinary consensus meeting, independent of the A-IADL-Q scores. An optimal A-IADL-Q cutoff point was determined, and sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Area under the curves (AUCs) were compared between A-IADL-Q and “disability assessment of dementia” (DAD). The additional diagnostic value of the A-IADL-Q to Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was examined using logistic regression analyses.\nResults: Dementia prevalence was 50.5%. Overall diagnostic accuracy based on the AUC was 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70-0.81) for the A-IADL-Q and 0.70 (95% CI: 0.63-0.77) for the DAD, which did not differ significantly. The optimal cutoff score for the A-IADL-Q was 51.4, resulting in sensitivity of 0.74 and specificity of 0.64. Combining the A-IADL-Q with the MMSE improved specificity (0.94), with a decline in sensitivity (0.55). Logistic regression models showed that adding A-IADL-Q improved the diagnostic accuracy (Z = 2.55, P = .011), whereas the DAD did not.\nConclusions: In this study, we showed a fair diagnostic accuracy for A-IADL-Q and an additional value in the diagnosis of dementia. These results support the role of A-IADL-Q as a valuable diagnostic tool.",

            "abstractNote": "To propose a simplified tool to recognize subjects with a moderate risk to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM): this method would take into account only variables from metabolic syndrome definitions which are cheaply assessable. A total of 3,003 employees without diabetes in Italy who attended one annual health examination between 2009 and 2012 were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was administered along with the annual health examination to record personal and familiar anamnesis. To identify Type 2 DM-prone individuals, the diabetes predictive model by Stern MP et al. was used. Then a multiple logistic regression model was developed using the predicted probability 20 %+ of developing Type 2 DM as the outcome variable and a panel of easily measurable continuous baseline characteristics as explanatory variables (waist circumference, WC; body mass index, BMI; and systolic blood pressure, SBP). The optimism-adjusted area under the curve of the proposed model receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) is 0.90. The effects of the explanatory variables on the presumed Type 2 DM risk are summarized by the following adjusted odds ratio values: 2.65 for SBP (P < 0.001), 2.01 for WC (P = 0.04) and 4.64 for BMI (P < 0.001). The satisfactory ROC of the proposed model suggests the importance of simple assessments in the prognostic information on Type 2 DM risk. Such ease of use may be particularly relevant in populations facing the transition from traditional to industrial food who do not have a sophisticated health service yet.",

            "abstractNote": "To determine the diagnostic ability of laminar thickness obtained using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) of the Heidelberg Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT) system (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) and the factors related to laminar thickness in patients with glaucoma.\nEvaluation of a diagnostic test.\nA total of 144 patients with glaucoma (68 with primary open-angle glaucoma [POAG], 76 with normal-tension glaucoma [NTG]), and 65 healthy controls.\nAll patients underwent retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and optic nerve head (ONH) scanning with the Spectralis OCT system. Mean laminar thickness was defined at the center of the mid-superior, central, and mid-inferior horizontal B-scans of the ONH, and the mean of 3 laminar thickness measurements was used for the diagnostic test. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were obtained for average and quadrant RNFL thickness and mean laminar thickness. Areas under the ROC curve (AUCs), 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and sensitivities at a fixed specificity (90%) were calculated. Factors related to mean laminar thickness were analyzed by univariate and multivariate regression analyses in patients with glaucoma.\nComparison of diagnostic ability using AUCs.\nMean laminar thickness had the largest AUCs among all patients with glaucoma (AUC, 0.980; 95% CI, 0.966–0.993) and patients with NTG (AUC, 0.989; 95% CI, 0.980–0.994). The AUC of the mean laminar thickness of patients with NTG was significantly different from the AUC of the inferior RNFL thickness (AUC, 0.947; 95% CI, 0.929–0.965; P = 0.047), which had the largest AUC among the RNFL thickness parameters. The AUCs for discrimination between early glaucomatous eyes and normal eyes showed significant differences between the NTG group (AUC, 0.981; 95% CI, 0.968–0.992) and all patients with glaucoma (AUC, 0.941; 95% CI, 0.931–0.952; P = 0.007). The factor significantly associated with laminar thickness in both univariate and multivariate regression was NTG diagnosis (P = 0.001).\nThe diagnostic ability of laminar thickness was comparable to that of peripapillary RNFL thickness in patients with glaucoma overall and better than peripapillary RNFL thickness in patients with early NTG.\nThe author(s) have no proprietary or commercial interest in any materials discussed in this article.",

            "abstractNote": "Field data relating aquatic ecosystem responses with water quality constituents that are potential ecosystem stressors are being used increasingly in the United States in the derivation of water quality criteria to protect aquatic life. In light of this trend, there is a need for transparent quantitative methods to assess the performance of models that predict ecological conditions using a stressor–response relationship, a response variable threshold, and a stressor variable criterion. Analysis of receiver operating characteristics (ROC analysis) has a considerable history of successful use in medical diagnostic, industrial, and other fields for similarly structured decision problems, but its use for informing water quality management decisions involving risk-based environmental criteria is less common. In this article, ROC analysis is used to evaluate predictions of ecological response variable status for 3 water quality stressor–response data sets. Information on error rates is emphasized due in part to their common use in environmental studies to describe uncertainty. One data set is comprised of simulated data, and 2 involve field measurements described previously in the literature. These data sets are also analyzed using linear regression and conditional probability analysis for comparison. Results indicate that of the methods studied, ROC analysis provides the most comprehensive characterization of prediction error rates including false positive, false negative, positive predictive, and negative predictive errors. This information may be used along with other data analysis procedures to set quality objectives for and assess the predictive performance of risk-based criteria to support water quality management decisions.             "abstractNote": "Although the equality among two or more ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curves is usually contrasted from the respective AUCs (area under the ROC curve), two different ROC curves can share the same AUC and, in order to compare the ROC curves equality, most general criteria must be considered. In this paper, the authors deal with the general ROC curve comparison problem on paired design. They extend the tests for the classical cumulative distribution functions (CDF) comparison to the ROC curves context. To approximate the statistic distribution, two different resampling plans are considered; the usual one based on permutations and a new bootstrap procedure which does not require the exchangeability assumption. As usual, from Monte Carlo simulations, the performance of the proposed methodology is studied for two traditional tests; one based on the Kolmogorov–Smirnov criteria and the other one on the L2L2-measure. The observed results suggest that the proposed bootstrap provides a good statistic distribution approximation for medium sample size. Therefore the studied methodology allows us to compare the equality of ROC curves by defining a criteria according to the needs of the problem.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper applies receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to micro-level, monthly time series from the M3-Competition. Forecasts from competing methods were used in binary decision rules to forecast exceptionally large declines in demand. Using the partial area under the ROC curve (PAUC) criterion as a forecast accuracy measure and paired-comparison testing via bootstrapping, we find that complex univariate methods (including Flores-Pearce 2, ForecastPRO, Automat ANN, Theta, and SmartFCS) perform best for this purpose. The Kendall tau test of dependency for PAUC and a judgmental index of forecast method complexity provide further confirming evidence. We also found that decision-rule combination forecasts using three top methods generally perform better than the component methods, although not statistically so. The top methods for forecasting large declines match the top methods for conventional forecast accuracy in the M3-Competition’s micro monthly time series, and therefore, evidence from the M3-Competition suggests that practitioners should use complex univariate forecast methods for operations-level forecasting, for both ordinary and large-change forecasts.",

            "abstractNote": "Objectives The findings of a previous multigene study indicated that the expression of a panel of seven specific genes had strong differential power regarding inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) versus non-IBD, as well as ulcerative colitis (UC) versus Crohn's disease (CD). This prospective confirmatory study based on an independent patient cohort from a national Danish IBD centre was conducted in an attempt to verify these earlier observations. Design, setting and participants A total of 119 patients were included in the study (CD, UC and controls). Three mucosal biopsies were retrieved from the left side of the colon of each patient. RNA was extracted, and RT-PCR was performed to retain expression profiles from the seven selected genes. Expression data from the training set (18 CD, 20 UC and 20 controls) were used to build a classification model, using quadratic discriminant analysis, and data from the test set (20 CD, 21 UC and 20 controls) were used to test the validity of the model. Results The present investigation did not confirm the previous observation that a panel of seven specific genes is able to distinguish between patients with CD and UC, whereas the discriminative power for IBD versus control subjects was substantiated. Conclusion Our results fail to demonstrate that the previously identified seven-gene classification model is able to discriminate between CD and UC but suggest that the gene panel merely discriminates between inflamed and noninflamed colonic tissue. Thus, a reliable and simple diagnostic tool is still warranted for optimal diagnosis and treatment of patients with IBD, especially the subgroup with unclassified disease.",

            "abstractNote": "We evaluated secreted wingless (Wnt) modulators during cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr). The major findings were: (i) Plasma levels of Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) were significantly lower in patients with CMV DNAemia above lower level of quantification at baseline. (ii) Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that low DKK-1 and increased secreted frizzled related protein-3 levels were predictors of poor virological outcomes during follow-up. Our findings demonstrate an imbalanced pattern of circulating secreted Wnt modulators in SOTr with poor virological outcomes following treatment for CMV disease, and may suggest a role for dysregulated Wnt signaling on viral pathogenesis during CMV infection.",

            "abstractNote": "Habitat fragmentation in aquatic systems has led to widespread isolation of stream fishes. Metapopulation theory predicts that persistence is directly related to local patch size and its characteristics, but because these relationships tend to be taxon-specific, empirical data are important. We assembled 246 observations of occurrence of westslope cutthroat trout (WCT), a taxon of concern in the western U.S. and Canada, in stream networks isolated for up to 100 years (median 40 years) above human-made barriers, mostly culverts, at road crossings within U.S. National Forests. We used logistic regression to analyse how WCT occurrence varied with patch size, isolation time and stream-level covariates. Occurrence was positively related to stream length and habitat quality within the isolated stream network and negatively related to elevation and channel gradient. Unexpectedly, the probability of occurrence was not related to how long a habitat patch had been isolated. At the median elevation (1354 m) and channel gradient (14%), and where habitat quality was poor, WCT were likely to occur (probability >0.5) if an isolated stream network was at least 1.7 km. If habitat quality was high, about 0.2 km of habitat produced the same probability. Although there are important limitations, this analysis provides the first empirical estimate for how patch size and patch-level characteristics influence persistence of WCT in isolated stream networks.",

            "abstractNote": "Purpose: With emergence of clinical outcomes databases as tools utilized routinely within institutions, comes need for software tools to support automated statistical analysis of these large data sets and intrainstitutional exchange from independent federated databases to support data pooling. In this paper, the authors present a design approach and analysis methodology that addresses both issues. Methods: A software application was constructed to automate analysis of patient outcomes data using a wide range of statistical metrics, by combining use of C#.Net and R code. The accuracy and speed of the code was evaluated using benchmark data sets. Results: The approach provides data needed to evaluate combinations of statistical measurements for ability to identify patterns of interest in the data. Through application of the tools to a benchmark data set for dose-response threshold and to SBRT lung data sets, an algorithm was developed that uses receiver operator characteristic curves to identify a threshold value and combines use of contingency tables, Fisher exact tests, Welch t-tests, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests to filter the large data set to identify values demonstrating dose-response. Kullback-Leibler divergences were used to provide additional confirmation. Conclusions: The work demonstrates the viability of the design approach and the software tool for analysis of large data sets.",

            "abstractNote": "The SYNTAX score stratifies risk among drug-eluting stent-treated patients and is based on lesion characteristics alone. The Clinical SYNTAX Score (CSS) combines the SYNTAX score with age, ejection fraction, and creatinine clearance. We assessed its ability to stratify long-term outcomes in sirolimus-eluting stents (SES)-treated patients. Between August 2004 and March 2005, 249 patients were treated with SES. Clinical follow-up was evaluated at more than 5 years. The CSS was available for 206 patients. More than 5-year clinical follow-up data (mean 2114 ± 107 days) and CSS (range 1–322, mean 35.3 ± 49.9, median 17.5) were available for 201 patients. We divided these scores into tertiles: CSS-LOW ≤ 9.5, 9.5 < CSS-MID ≤ 28, and CSS-HIGH > 28. CSS-HIGH was associated with a higher death rate (CSS-LOW 9.0 %, CSS-MID 11.9 %, CSS-HIGH 41.8 %; log-rank p < 0.001) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) (CSS-LOW 29.8 %, CSS-MID 35.8 %, CSS-HIGH 61.2 %; log-rank p = 0.004). Independent predictors for death were hemodialysis [hazard ratio (HR) 3.82; p < 0.001], age (HR 1.67; p = 0.003), ejection fraction (HR 0.98, p = 0.012) and CSS (HR 1.73, p = 0.028), and those for MACE were hemodialysis (HR 2.53, p = 0.002) and CSS (HR 1.40, p = 0.028). Areas under the curve for the SYNTAX score and CSS for death were 0.60 and 0.78 (p < 0.001), whereas those for MACE were 0.58 and 0.68 (p < 0.001), respectively. The CSS predicts long-term outcomes among SES-treated patients better than the SYNTAX score.",

            "abstractNote": "OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of digital subtraction angiography (DSA)-like bone subtraction with 2 different registration methods for the identification of bone marrow edema pattern (BMEP) in patients with lytic bone lesions, using magnetic resonance imaging as the criterion standard.\nMATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five patients with a lytic bone lesion were included in this prospective study with approval from the ethics committee. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging and low-dose computed tomographic (CT) perfusion after signing an informed consent. Two CT volumes were used for bone subtraction, which was performed with 2 different algorithms (rigid and nonrigid). Enhancement at the nonlytic bone marrow was considered as a sign of BMEP. Two readers evaluated the images blindly. The presence of BMEP on bone-subtracted CT images was evaluated subjectively and quantitatively. Image quality was assessed. Magnetic resonance imaging was used as the criterion standard.\nRESULTS: Using a rigid registration method, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of CT with DSA-like bone subtraction BMEP was 77%, 100%, 100%, 68%, and 85%, respectively. The interobserver agreement was good (κ, 0.782). Image quality was better using a nonrigid registration. With this algorithm, artifacts interfered with image interpretation in only 5% of cases. However, there was a noticeable drop in sensitivity and negative predictive value when a nonrigid algorithm was used: 56% and 52%, respectively. The interobserver agreement was average with a nonrigid subtraction algorithm.\nCONCLUSIONS: Computed tomography with DSA-like bone subtraction is sensitive and highly specific for the identification of BMEP associated with lytic bone lesions. Rigid registering should be preferred, but nonrigid algorithms can be used as a second option when artifacts interfere with image interpretation.",

            "abstractNote": "The ratio of apolipoprotein B (apoB) to apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1) has been reported to be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR). Non-HDL-C is regarded as a surrogate marker for apoB in routine clinical practice. However, it is unclear whether the ratio of non-HDL-C to HDL-C is an equal or a better predictor than the apoB/apoA1 ratio for the identification of MetS and IR.\nWe performed a retrospective study of 41,821 Korean adults who participated in a routine health screening examination. Anthropometry, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, CRP, lipid profiles, apoB, and apoA1 were measured.\nTo compare the predictive value for MetS between different lipid ratios, we analyzed the ROC curves of apoB/apoA1 and non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratios. ROC analysis showed that the AUCs of non-HDL-C/HDL-C (0.75 [95% CI = 0.74–0.76] in men and 0.84 [95% CI = 0.83–0.85] in women) were significantly higher than those of apoB/apoA1 (0.66 [95% CI = 0.65–0.67] in men and 0.77 [95% CI = 0.76–0.78] in women). The non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio also showed a significantly stronger association with HOMA-IR than the apoB/apoA1 ratio. The optimal cutoff value of the non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio for detection of MetS in men was 3.39, with a sensitivity of 66.7% and a specificity of 71.8%, whereas the optimal ratio cutoff value in women was 2.89, with a sensitivity of 75.7% and a specificity of 78.1%.\nOur findings indicate that the non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio is a better marker than the apoB/apoA1 ratio for identifying IR and MetS in Koreans.",

            "abstractNote": "There is a need for brief screening instruments for autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) that can be used by frontline healthcare professionals to aid in the decision as to whether an individual should be referred for a full diagnostic assessment. In this study we evaluated the ability of a short form of the autism spectrum quotient (AQ) questionnaire, the 10 item AQ-10, to correctly classify individuals as having or not having ASD. In a sample of 149 individuals with ASD and 134 controls without an ASD diagnosis, we found that the full AQ (AQ-50) abridged AQ (AQ-S) and AQ-10 all performed well as a screen for ASD. ROC analysis indicated that sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve were very similar at suggested cut-off’s for ASD across measures, with little difference in performance between the AQ-10 and full AQ-50. Results indicate the potential usefulness of the AQ-10 as a brief screen for ASD.",

            "abstractNote": "BackgroundComputer-aided diagnosis (CADx) software that provides a second opinion has been widely used to assist physicians with various tasks. In dermatology, however, CADx has been mostly limited to melanoma or melanocytic skin cancer diagnosis. The frequency of non-melanocytic skin cancers and the accessibility of regular digital macrographs have raised interest in developing CADx for broader applications.ObjectivesTo investigate the feasibility of using CADx to diagnose both melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin lesions based on conventional digital photographic images.MethodsThis study was approved by an institutional review board, and the requirement to obtain informed consent was waived. In total, 769 conventional photographs of melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin lesions were retrospectively reviewed and used to develop a CADx system. Conventional and new color-related image features were developed to classify the lesions as benign or malignant using support vector machines (SVMs). The performance of CADx was compared with that of dermatologists.ResultsThe clinicians' overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 83.33%, 85.88%, and 85.31%, respectively. New color correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) features improved the classification ability of the baseline CADx (p = 0.001). The estimated area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (Az) of the proposed CADx system was 0.949, with a sensitivity and specificity of 85.63% and 87.65%, respectively, and a maximum accuracy of 90.64%.ConclusionsWe have developed an effective CADx system to classify both melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin lesions using conventional digital macrographs. The system's performance was similar to that of dermatologists at our institute. Through improved feature extraction and SVM analysis, we found that conventional digital macrographs were feasible for providing useful information for CADx applications. The new color-related features significantly improved CADx applications for skin cancer.",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to evaluate stereoscopic perception of low-dose breast tomosynthesis projection images. In this Institutional Review Board exempt study, craniocaudal breast tomosynthesis cases (N = 47), consisting of 23 biopsy-proven malignant mass cases and 24 normal cases, were retrospectively reviewed. A stereoscopic pair comprised of two projection images that were ±4° apart from the zero angle projection was displayed on a Planar PL2010M stereoscopic display (Planar Systems, Inc., Beaverton, OR, USA). An experienced breast imager verified the truth for each case stereoscopically. A two-phase blinded observer study was conducted. In the first phase, two experienced breast imagers rated their ability to perceive 3D information using a scale of 1–3 and described the most suspicious lesion using the BI-RADS® descriptors. In the second phase, four experienced breast imagers were asked to make a binary decision on whether they saw a mass for which they would initiate a diagnostic workup or not and also report the location of the mass and provide a confidence score in the range of 0–100. The sensitivity and the specificity of the lesion detection task were evaluated. The results from our study suggest that radiologists who can perceive stereo can reliably interpret breast tomosynthesis projection images using stereoscopic viewing.",
