These data confirm Ti to be 5-coordinated within a square-based pyramid. The second difference function, which gives directly the Ti-Ti distribution, shows a first Ti-Ti distance at 3.5 Å, with second and third Ti neighbors at 6 Å and 8 Å. These values correspond to a nonhomogeneous distribution of Ti in the glass structure and are consistent with corner-sharing TiO5 pyramids. This explains how this peculiar TiO5 site, with one nonbridging O at 1.68 Å and four O at 1.96 Å, allows Ti to play both a former and a modifier role in the glass structure. The environment of potassium is consistent with a charge compensating role. EXAFS data indicate that the Ni nanodomains disappear progressively when adding alkali oxide, whatever the nature of the alkali. This medium range reorganization around Ni is associated with a change of the local site from 6- to 5-fold coordination at 27–30 mol% alkali oxide and 4-fold coordination at higher alkali oxide content. Ni–Ni connections are still present for [5]Ni but no second neighbors are observed for [4]Ni in the EXAFS signal. Specifically, high-valent cations in the cationic coordination of the oxygen ligator atoms beside M determine the bonding behaviour of oxygen towards the transition metal ions. Applying a newly developed extension of the angular overlap model (AOM) to fit the d–d spectra and the EPR g and hyperfine tensor components (Cu2+), the bonding parameters eσ and eπ for a great variety of structures and solids are evaluated. In these calculations a 2s–2p hybridisation on oxygen is anticipated, where the number and the geometrical arrangement of the high-valent cations (NbV, SbV; WVI, TeVI, etc.) determine the kind of hybridisation (sp, sp2, sp3) and the directional properties of the hybrid orbitals. A wide range of AOM parameters—eσ ranging from ∼3 to ∼5×103 cm−1 in the case of Ni2+—is obtained, the most striking changes being observed, if a d0 configurated cation (NbV, WVI) is substituted by a cation with d10 configuration (SbV, TeVI). Particularly interesting are anisotropies in the π-interactions in the case of sp2 hybridised oxygen atoms, which lead to large symmetry splittings of the d–d transitions. The eσ and eπ energies, which constitute the ligand field parameter Δ, turn out to be rather complex bonding parameters. They can be classified according to the local symmetry of the M–O bond in the respective crystal structure and correspond to the σ- and π-overlap capacities resulting from the modeling of the oxygen bonding properties by strongly contrapolarising cations in the oxygen coordination sphere. Additional information, specifically about the degree of covalence within the transition metal–oxygen bond, comes from the nephelauxetic ratio β and the mixing coefficient α of CuII in the ground state MO—both parameters deduced from the experiment. The obtained results can be nicely interpreted by defining effective electronegativities of oxygen towards the transition metal. Thus, high-valent and small cations as SVI and PV are strongly contrapolarising and generate highly ionic oxygen atoms comparable to the fluoride ions. The collected data are finally used to define oxygen ligand fields with the property to stablise the higher oxidation states of the late 3d metal ions (CuIII, NiIII, NiIV).", "publicationTitle": spectrometer to enable static and femtosecond time-resolved resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements from liquids at free electron laser (FEL) light sources. We demonstrate the feasibility of this type of experiments with the measurements performed at the Linac Coherent Light Source FEL facility. At the FEL we observed changes in the RIXS spectra at high peak fluences which currently sets a limit to maximum attainable count rate at FELs. The authors present a review of both experimental and theoretical investigations of electrons in solids using this second-order optical process, in which there is coherent absorption and emission of x rays at resonance with electronic excitations. The review starts with some of the fundamental aspects of RIXS, after which are presented typical experimental data and their theoretical interpretation for various materials. The first class of materials considered is semiconductors and insulators (Si, C, and BN), which are typical systems with weak electron correlation, and the data are interpreted based on electronic states described by an energy-band model. Effects of symmetry of electronic states and electron momentum conservation are discussed. At the opposite extreme are rare-earth systems (metals and oxides), in which the 4f electrons are almost localized with strong electron correlation. The observations are interpreted based on the effects of intra-atomic multiplet coupling and weak interatomic electron transfer, which are well described with an Anderson impurity model or a cluster model. In this context a narrowing of spectral width in the excitation spectrum, polarization dependence, and the magnetic circular dichroism in ferromagnetic materials are discussed. The authors then consider transition-metal compounds, materials with electron correlation strengths intermediate between semiconductors and rare-earth systems. In these interesting cases there is an interplay of intra-atomic and interatomic electronic interactions that leads to limitations of both the band model and the Anderson impurity model. The intensity of the pre-edge peak at ∼7112.7 eV of the Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of Fe1.01Se decreases for pressure from 0.5 GPa increased to 6.9 GPa. The satellite line Kβ′ was reduced in intensity upon applying pressure and became absent for pressure 52 GPa. Fe1.01Se shows a small net magnetic moment of Fe2+, likely arising from strong Fe-Fe spin fluctuations. The 1s3p-RXES spectra of Fe1.01Se at pressures 0.5, 6.9, and 52 GPa recorded at the Fe K-edge reveal that unoccupied Fe 3d states exhibit a delocalized character, stemming from hybridization of Fe 3d and 4p orbitals arising from a local distortion around the Fe atom in a tetrahedral site. Application of pressure causes suppression of this on-site Fe 3d-Fe 4p hybridization, and thereby decreases the intensity of the pre-edge feature in the Fe K-edge absorption spectrum of Fe1.01Se. Compression enhances spin fluctuations at Fe sites in Fe1.01Se and increases the corresponding Tc, through a competition between nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions. This new technique thus yields information on the electronic structure that is not accessible in conventional K-edge absorption spectroscopy. The line splittings can be understood within a ligand field multiplet model, i.e., (3d,3d) and (2p,3d) two-electron interactions are crucial to describe the spectral shapes in all systems. We propose to explain the shift of the K pre-edge absorption energy upon Mn oxidation in terms of the effective number of 3d electrons (fractional 3d orbital population). The analysis of the high-resolution 1s2p RIXS plane allows a more detailed determination of the ground state electronic structure, as compared with 1s x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The apparent absence of interference effects suggests that the lifetime broadening of the pre-edge states is (significantly) reduced from the edge lifetime broadening. The temperature dependent RIXS planes are explained as a combination of the ground state and first excited state due to thermal population of the excited state, which are a result of the symmetry distortion, 3d spin-orbit coupling and magnetic exchange interactions. No features due to charge transfer and non-local transitions are observed due to the relatively small cobalt-oxygen overlap as compared with higher valent systems. In this work, we apply bulk sensitive Fe L edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the crystal field environment of the Fe in ferrihydrite and other Fe oxides of known structure. We demonstrate that decomposition of the pre-edge into its various components can be derived in a very straightforward way from RXES spectra when measured on a fine energy grid, which leads to “two-dimensional mapping” of the pre-edge region. Thanks to the sharpening effect of the resonant process, features can be observed with resolution better than the 1s core-hole lifetime. Finally, through dispersion of the RXES features, we show that the pre-edge is dominated by transitions to mainly localized states.
