            "abstractNote": "Overcoming Barriers to Student Learning explores why certain students \"get stuck\" at particular points in the curriculum whilst others grasp concepts with comparative ease. It proposes a \"threshold concepts\" approach to the curriculum, arguing that in certain disciplines there are \"conceptual gateways\" or \"portals\" that lead to previously inaccessible, and initially perhaps \"troublesome,\" ways of thinking about something. A new way of understanding, interpreting, or viewing a topic may thus emerge - having a transformative effect on internal view of subject matter, subject landscape, or even world view. While maintaining that knowledge should indeed be \"troubling\" in order for it to be transformative, this book provides new perspectives on helping students through such conceptual difficulty in order to enhance learning and teaching environments in higher education, and in other educational sectors. It discusses: Ways of dealing with the kinds of anxiety, self-doubt and frustration that learning can evoke in students; How we might help our students not to avoid the troublesomeness, but to feel more confident in coping with it, resolving it and moving on with confidence; What might account for variation in student performance when dealing with concepts; What teachers might do in relation to the design and teaching of their courses that could help students overcome such barriers to their learning; What makes particular areas of knowledge more troublesome than others. The illustrative case studies presented here will help teachers analyze their own practice. Overcoming Barriers to Student Learning will serve the needs of educational researchers and developers, and academics within various disciplines who wish to learn more about threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge",

            "abstractNote": "Over the last decade the notion of 'threshold concepts' has proved influential around the world as a powerful means of exploring and discussing the key points of transformation that students experience in their higher education courses and the 'troublesome knowledge' that these often present. Threshold concepts provoke in the learner a state of 'liminality' in which transformation takes place, requiring the integration of new understanding and the letting go of previous learning stances. Insights gained by learners as they cross thresholds can be exhilarating but might also be unsettling, requiring an uncomfortable shift in identity, or, paradoxically, a sense of loss. The liminal space can be a suspended state of partial understanding, or 'stuck place', in which understanding approximates to a kind of 'mimicry'. Threshold Concepts and Transformational Learning substantially increases the empirical evidence for threshold concepts across a large number of disciplinary contexts and from the higher education sectors of many countries. This new volume develops further theoretical perspectives and provides fresh pedagogical directions. It will be of interest to teachers, practitioners and managers in all disciplines as well as to educational researchers",

            "abstractNote": "Using \"threshold concepts\" (Meyer and Land) as a lens, this article examines several issues related to learning within and across two general education courses--one in writing and one in history--in which students were concurrently enrolled. Analysis of data from students and instructors (of the history course) suggests threshold concepts that are shared among history and writing courses; however, the data also indicate that the extent to which these shared concepts are enacted through instruction is somewhat inconsistent. The article ultimately suggests that threshold concepts might prove a productive frame through which to consider questions related to writing and transfer, and also to general education more broadly.
