Results show that MARC, AACR2, and LCSH are the most widely used metadata schema, content standard, and subjectcontrolled vocabulary, respectively. Dublin Core (DC) is the second most widely used metadata schema, followed by EAD, MODS, VRA, and TEI. Qualified DC’s wider use vis-à-vis Unqualified DC (40.6 percent versus 25.4 percent) is noteworthy. The leading criteria in selecting metadata and controlled-vocabulary schemata are collection-specific considerations, such as the types of resources, nature of the collection, and needs of primary users and communities. Existing technological infrastructure and staff expertise also are significant factors contributing to the current use of metadata schemata and controlled vocabularies for subject access across distributed digital repositories and collections. Metadata interoperability remains a major challenge. There is a lack of exposure of locally created metadata and metadata guidelines beyond the local environments. One hundred ninety-three institutions responded for a return rate of 75 percent. Because it is an esoteric process that is largely invisible to patrons, it is an easy target for postponement, particularly in a time of reduced staffing in technical services and claims that keyword searching in OPACS can “do it all.” A survey was designed to explore the status of authority control in public, community college, four-year college, and university libraries in Mississippi. Participants were asked about their automation status; whether they perform authority work; types of headings verified in new cataloging and upgraded in existing records; whether they use vendor services for authority control; and levels of staffing. Finally, respondents were invited to express their thoughts on improving authority work in their libraries. Sixty-three of the 102 recipients responded (a return rate of 62 percent). Almost 80 percent of the respondents performed some sort of authority work; most of those that did not cited lack of time, staff, and money. Personal names and subjects were found to be the most-verified types of headings. Use of vendors was limited; only 22 percent of the libraries that perform authority work had used a vendor's services, mostly for one-time database cleanup runs. Authority control responsibilities in public libraries were about evenly divided between degreed librarians and paraprofessionals; in other types of libraries, librarians were more likely to perform authority work. Respondents' “wish lists” frequently included additional staff, funds, and automated system capabilities. Overall, the survey results indicate that a high value is placed on authority control and that often-scarce resources are devoted to catalog quality.", "publicationTitle": "Technical Services
