D'abord, la voix en politique relève du genre autant que du sexe. Ce n'est pas la nature qui parle, car la voix participe des rapports de pouvoir. Previously, creaky voice was interpreted as a voice quality of masculinity or authority. Moreover, a matched-guise perception survey indicates that college-age Americans residing in two contrasting regions, northern California and eastern Iowa, perceive female creaky voice as hesitant, nonaggressive, and informal but also educated, urban-oriented, and upwardly mobile. The sociocultural meanings indexed through this voice quality may have been reinterpreted recently as a new type of female voice in America. In addition, these American listeners reported frequent creaky voice usage by women in both regions. Creaky voice as a new type of female voice quality may also be becoming a conspicuous part of relatively young American women's unconscious (linguistic) performance. In both this study and one conducted by John Rickford more than twenty years ago, women, compared with men, use more basilectal variants in the category of 1sg. subject (mi vs. ai), but fewer in the category of 3sg. objects (am vs. shi/ii/it). Rather than explain this variation as a \"leveling out\" (Rickford 1979), it is here suggested that variants must be understood in terms of their contribution to an unfolding interactional engagement. The conclusion remarks on the continuing confusion among sociolinguists regarding the analytical relevance of gender as an external constraint on variation. Many FTMs enter the workforce as women and then transition to become men, an experience that can provide them with an \"outsider-within\" perspective on the \"patriarchal dividend\"—the advantages men in general gain from the subordination of women. Many of the respondents in this article find themselves, as men, receiving more authority, reward, and respect in the workplace than they received as women, even when they remain in the same jobs. The author argues that their experiences can make the underpinnings of gendered workplace disparities visible and help illuminate how structural disadvantages for women are reproduced in workplace interactions. These ratings allowed the researchers to examine the effects of different discourse types (scientific, dramatic, and spontaneous) and listener groups (gay males vs. a mix of males and females of unknown sexual orientation) on how listeners perceived the voices. The effects of lexical and pragmatic content were explored by a comparison of spoken and written presentations of the same spontaneous speech samples. The effect of asking participants to rate the voices using different constructs (e.g., masculine/feminine vs. gay-sounding/straight-sounding) is discussed. Drawing on the frameworks of ethnographically oriented discourse analysis and interactional sociolinguistics, this paper focuses on Greek conversational storytelling with the aim of exploring systematic differences between women and men in the construction of narrative worlds. It is argued that Greek narrative discourse style is based on a closed set of performance devices that, though drawn upon equally by both gender groups, act as contextualization cues for the storytellers' gender identity. This is mainly evidenced in instances of speech animation that give rise to gendershaped participation frameworks. These are an integral part of the narrators' unmarked self-presentation styles. Women's stories mainly involve self-depreciation, while men's stories display adversativeness and competitiveness. The discussion shows how storytellers strategically employ them to achieve various interactional purposes within conversational contexts.
