"abstractNote": "There is increasing interest in using digital signage to deliver highly personalised content. However, display personalization presents a number of architectural design challenges in particular, how best to provide personalisation without unduly compromising viewers' privacy. While previous research has focused on understanding specific elements of the overall vision, our work presents details of the first significant attempt at a system that integrates future pervasive display networks and mobile devices to support display personalisation. We describe a series of usage models and design goals for display personalisation and then present Tacita, a system that supports these models and goals. Our architecture includes mobile, display and cloud-based elements and provides comprehensive personalisation features while preventing the creation of user profiles within the display infrastructure, thus helping to preserve users' privacy. An initial evaluation of our prototype implementation of the architecture is also included and demonstrates the viability of the Tacita approach.",

"abstractNote": "Within a ubiquitous environment, market-based approaches can be used to select the most appropriate material for a public display, depending on factors such as the audience's preferences and diversity of interest. Likewise, strategies used by agents to compete for customer attention should strive to be rational, based on contextual observations of user-preferences within the local environment and include a reward mechanism based on audience responses. But while such systems currently exist, utilizing Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones to uniquely identify and detect the presence of individuals within a localised environment, there is little known about their effectiveness, or even how to assess usability for these systems. In this paper, we present the details a user study that contributed to the development of an interaction model that supports a structured methodology for evaluating intelligent pervasive displays.",

"abstractNote": "Public electronic displays are increasingly used for advertising. In a drive to improve the effectiveness of such displays, advertisers and researchers are exploring the creation of systems that show adverts tailored to the context of the display or to the profile of the audience in close proximity to the display. In this paper we explore, through structured interviews with potential users in two European countries, reactions to the ideas of implicit and explicit generation of such profiles and relate these to more general user views on privacy and targeted advertising. The initial results suggest that users are prepared to trade off ease of use against increased levels of control over their data and are therefore more comfortable with an explicit system.",

"abstractNote": "People counting has a wide range of applications in the context of pervasive systems. These applications range from efficient allocation of resources in smart buildings to handling emergency situations. There exist several vision based algorithms for people counting. Each algorithm performs differently in terms of efficiency, flexibility and accuracy for different indoor scenarios. Hence, evaluating these algorithms with respect to different application scenarios, environment conditions and camera orientations will provide a better choice for actual deployment. For this purpose, in our paper the most commonly implemented Frame Differencing, Circular Hough Transform and Histogram of Oriented Gradient based methods are evaluated with respect to different factors like camera orientation, lighting, occlusion etc. The performance of these algorithms under different scenarios demonstrates the need for more accurate and faster people counting algorithms.",

"abstractNote": "While video communication is becoming quite popular among remote friends and family, recent usage practices have been extending beyond just talking heads to remotely sharing an experience by doing an activity together. However, current video chat tools are aimed at sharing talking heads and need to be reconsidered to support remotely sharing activities. We explore a specific remote shared activity – watching video programs – through a three-phase study. We surveyed people’s interest in watching video together, studied how people currently watch together in their homes, and compared different conditions for watching together in the lab. Our work explored people’s current and desired practices, interactions, and technical implementations. We present our findings in themes that provide insights for designing systems that better support using video-mediated communication to share watching videos together over distance. We found that remotely watching video programs together while connected by video-mediated communication is engaging, fun, and fosters social bonds between the participants, and that these results are stronger with increased fidelity of the communication media.",

"abstractNote": "Location-based and personalized services are the key factors for promoting user satisfaction. However, most service providers did not consider the needs of mobile user in terms of their location and event-participation. Consequently, the service provider may lose the chance for better service and profit. In this paper, we present a Multi-stage Collaborative Filtering (MSCF) process to provide event recommendation based on mobile user's location. To achieve this purpose, the Collaborative Filtering (CF) technique is employed and the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) network is applied to cluster mobile users according to their personal profile. Sequential pattern mining is, then, used to discover the correlations between events for recommendation. The MSCF is designed not only to recommend for the old registered mobile user (ORMU), but also to handle the cold-start problem for new registered mobile user (NRMU). This research is designed to achieve the followings.",

"abstractNote": "Recommender Systems help an on-line user to tame information overload and are being used now in complex domains where it could be beneficial to exploit context-awareness, e.g., in travel recommendation. Technically, in Recommender Systems we can interpret context as a set of constraints or preferences over the usage of items determined by the contextual conditions (e.g., today it is raining or the user is in a particular location). In fact, there is a lack of approaches to deal effectively with contextual data. This thesis investigates some approaches to exploit context in Recommender Systems. It provides a general architecture of context-aware Recommender Systems and analyzes separate components of this model. The main focus is to investigate new approaches that can bring a real added value to users. In this paper I also describe my initial results on item selection and item weighting for context-dependent Collaborative Filtering (CF). Moreover, I shall present my ongoing research on CF hybridization using context.",

By introducing a definition of rational behavior, a method is obtained for determining under what conditions an employment contract will rationally be preferred to a sales contract, and what limits will rationally be placed on the authority of an employer in an employment contract. The relationship of this model to certain other theories of planning under uncertainty is discussed.",

What decision-makers do depends on what issues and answers they focus their attention on. What issues and answers they focus on depends on the specific situation and on how the firm's rules, resources, and relationships distribute various issues, answers, and decision-makers into specific communications and procedures. The paper develops these theoretical principles into a model of firm behavior and presents its implications for explaining firm behavior and adaptation.",

We emphasize two distinctions: Do activities involve immediate costs or immediate rewards, and are people sophisticated or naive about future self-control problems? Naive people procrastinate immediate-cost activities and preproperate--do too soon--immediate-reward activities. Sophistication mitigates procrastination, but exacerbates preproperation. Moreover, with immediate costs, a small present bias can severely harm only naive people, whereas with immediate rewards it can severely harm only sophisticated people. Lessons for savings, addiction, and elsewhere are discussed.",

Excess price dispersion across markets can arise, and goods may not be allocated efficiently. In this setting, information technologies may improve market performance and increase welfare. Between 1997 and 2001, mobile phone service was introduced throughout Kerala, a state in India with a large fishing industry. Using microlevel survey data, we show that the adoption of mobile phones by fishermen and wholesalers was associated with a dramatic reduction in price dispersion, the complete elimination of waste, and near-perfect adherence to the Law of One Price. Both consumer and producer welfare increased.",
