Its early practitioners, all scholars from outside the profession—the philosopher Carl Stumpf, the gynecologist Otto Abraham, the chemist Erich Moritz von Hornbostel, and the art historian Curt Sachs—first clearly posed the question of the nature and the origins of music in the comparative context. Although neither evolutionary perspectives nor Eurocentric issues could be entirely avoided, their approach was always very conscious of the pitfalls of falsification and committed to the strict reproducibility of results, including with respect to Hornbostel's controversial wind-quintet theorem. Even beyond this, an understanding of musical universals was articulated, specifically by Hornbostel, which is still potentially fruitful today. This view does not focus primarily on general, preexisting features which coalesce into a logical general concept; rather it pursues anthropological options, possibilities which emerge from processes of acculturation.
