Hi Rebecca,

My focus is on British fiction, so I am not as up-to-date on examples from the USA. However, off the top of my head, the following books may be useful. Bil Wright's Putting Make Up on the Fat Boy (2011); Robin Brande's Fat Cat (2009); Annie Bryant's Lake Rescue (2008); Nina Beck's This Book isn't Fat, it's Fabulous (2008); Nico Medina's Fat Hoochie Prom Queen (2008); K.L. Going's Fat Kid Rules the World; Deborah Blumenthal's Fat Camp (2006); Carolyn Macker's The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things (2003).

Going back a little further there is Louis Sachar's Holes (1998), Cherie Bennet's Life in the Fat Lane (1998) and Chris Crutcher's Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes (1993). Hillel Schwartz noted a flowering of children's books about weight loss in the nineteen seventies, and offers a very succinct but comprehensive summary of relevant examples in his book Never Satisfied. I'd recommend your student look that section up for context. Paula Danziger's The Cat ate my Gymsuit (1974) and the Sweet Valley High book Power Play (1983) come to mind.

As far as visual representation goes, I am sure there are relevant picture books but unfortunately they fall outside my research area. Filmwise, and following on from her interest in Disney, it may be worth looking at Pixar animations. I wrote an article about Up! which she may want to read
