"abstractNote": "In this paper we investigate the concept of shared leadership in the context of physically straining multi-service work in a public sector organisation. We expand the concept of shared leadership with the concept of shared caring by evaluating caring, relationships of trust and shared experiences within a group of employees, managers and customers. The results show\nthat the caring observed in the group is shared among the individuals and that it exhibits trust relationships that have been created through shared experiences. We found evidence that shared caring can be a pattern of positive leadership influence, directed to nurture, improve or help the situation of others in the group. The work group did not develop the pattern intentionally – rather it had evolved naturally through shared experiences and expected, foreseeable experiences. We suggest the notion of ‘leadership with care’ to describe this type of shared leadership influence. \nKeywords: shared leadership, shared caring, shared experience, trust, service work, teams",

"abstractNote": "While increasing, the project form of organising work is relatively new to the public sector. Despite this, many public sector employees have an understanding of how projects should be set up, managed and implemented. External funding for projects is often used to expand the regular budget funding to produce public services. Often the basic model of objective-realising project organising is not followed in its clearest form, rather the projects are set up to extend the organisations’ resources and to get something going – for many this is a gap between their prior assumptions about projects and the actual practice of projects. We investigate two case projects aiming at developing and producing public services with external funding. In the first case the participants do not discuss the nature and objectives of the project clearly, which resulted in a collapse of sense-making and frustration regarding the project and its participants’ roles. In the second case the purpose of the project in relation to other activities in the organisation was actively discussed, forming explicit identity regulation activities and experiences of progress for the participants. We analyse the cases through the framework of identity regulation and evaluate potential for micro-emancipation in the projects.\n\nKeywords: Identity regulation, micro-emancipation, public sector, service development, project management",

"abstractNote": "The article investigates the pattern of influence enacted by shop-floor service workers and line managers in a public sector organisation which have been affected by New Public Management changes. Applying the concepts of care (caring) and trust, we expand the concept of the relational influence pattern originating from leadership theory. We supplement our analysis with the sensitive methodology of studying activities in shop-floor work, namely experiences of transitions on the micro-level among a group of employees, managers and clients. The results show that the caring observed in the group is shared among the individuals, it supports their collective responsibility, and exhibits trust relationships that have been created through shared experiences. Qualitative evidence illustrates that shared caring can be a pattern of relational, embodied leadership influence, directed to nurture, improve or help the situation of others in the work community. The pattern had evolved naturally through shared and expected, foreseeable experiences. We suggest the notion of leadership with care to describe this type of relational leadership influence.",

"abstractNote": "In this paper we suggest that there are two types of project strategy: project’s business strategy and project’s execution strategy. The project’s business strategy focuses on the purpose of the project, addressing the question: Why does the project exist? The project’s execution strategy addresses the question: How is the project executed? We conduct a conceptual analysis of the distinctive contents of these two project strategy types by focusing on the project management literature. We also analyse the links of the two types of project strategy to other stakeholders in the project’s environment than the parent organisation, and to other contextual factors in the project’s environment. Our analysis suggests that the formation of these two types of project strategy is a complex process that is affected not only by the corporate level strategies and guidelines of the project’s parent firm, but also by stakeholders and contextual factors in the project’s context. In the empirical study, we investigate risk strategies and risk management strategies in eight power plant delivery projects in one major energy system supplier company. For the empirical study, we define the corresponding project strategy concepts in the project risk management application area. Risk strategy corresponds to the project’s business strategy by addressing the “why” question for the management of risks being in place. The risk strategy includes the project’s approach to different kinds of risks, and it includes statements of the project’s attitude to risks: for example, what kinds of risks are acceptable and what kind of risks must be avoided. Risk management strategy corresponds to the project’s execution strategy by including the project’s approach to organize its risk management in a most effective way (“how”) to meet´goals for risk management as defined in risk strategy. The results of our study suggests that in addition to the parent firm, also the customer, subcontractors and local authorities are major stakeholders that have an influence of strategy formation of the two types of the project’s strategy. The influence of these stakeholders on the project’s strategies varied, depending on the case project. The parent firm has a significant influence on the risk strategies (or business strategies) of the case projects. The other stakeholders’ impact can be seen more clearly on the risk management strategies (or execution strategies). The parent firm thus sets the purpose of a project, but the project sets its management strategies by taking into account the contextual factors and stakeholders.\n\nKeywords: Project strategy, project’s business strategy, project’s execution strategy, strategy formation, contingencies, context, stakeholders",

"abstractNote": "This conceptual paper aims to increase our under-standing of service innovation by separating and ana-lyzing some of its basic dimensions: the target of the renewal, the nature of the renewal, and the radicalness of the renewal. Service innovations are discussed both at the product level and at the firm level. In innovation literature, the product level has deserved most attention. We summarize and develop further the views that we consider most promising here. In addition, we highlight the importance of innovations regarding the whole service portfolio, the general organization of service firms and the positioning of service firms in the markets. These issues have rarely been discussed from the innovation perspective, but the original thoughts of Schumpeter provide good starting points for the extension of innovation analysis to this broader level.",

"abstractNote": "The objective of this paper is to identify control mechanisms and evaluate factors affecting modes of control. We focused on the control relationships within a programme team consisting of project managers and the programme manager. We investigated four case programmes aiming at an organisational change and including a significant IT component, and identified 23 control mechanisms. The control mechanisms seemed to be complementary rather than substitutes, and the overall level of control in the case programmes varied significantly. The selection of control mechanisms was influenced significantly by the existing mechanisms and the code of conduct of the parent organisation, the programme manager’s and the project managers’ personal preferences, knowledge and skills. The results mainly support existing literature on organisational control, but some findings are controversial or novel compared to extant literature.\nKEYWORDS: change programme, control, control mode, control mechanism",

"abstractNote": "Services are becoming increasingly important part of the Finnish real estate business as structure of the cluster changes and the organisations are challenged by international competitors. This pre-study aims at creating better understanding of the typical service innovation practices currently used in the Finnish real estate cluster. The objective is to find out how sophisticated the service development activities are; what are the processes and organisational practices in developing services and what types of service innovations are most typical for the industry. The concept of service innovation includes both innovation in service characteristics and innovation in service process and organisation. The theoretical background for this study consists of previous research on characteristics of service innovation, service innovation processes and management of service development. The study itself is carried out as qualitative theme interviews of 5 property owners and 10 service producers.\n\nThe results of the study imply that the companies in the industry in general do not have formal, systematic mechanisms for creating service innovations. However, some typical elements of service innovations and innovation processes in the real estate cluster can be found. The form of innovation process varies depending on the type of service innovation in question. Also the context, e.g. the organisation’s role in a value chain has an impact on the service innovation practices. This study can be used as a basis for further research on the subject. Especially two issues seem to need closer examination: how current innovation activities can be improved, and into what extent the industry could benefit from more systematic approach to innovation processes?",

Our comparative case study indicates that a separate unit as such does not guarantee success. An essential issue is how customer interaction and the continuous flow of customer information have been secured. Sales personnel have often been regarded as a crucial group in the creation of customer intelligence. Our study indicates that field technicians and operative personnel are at least equally important as a channel of customer information.",

This paper studies manufacturing companies entering the service business, and offers a framework based on a literature review focusing on challenges in their servitization process. The framework presented enables companies to examine their capabilities to servitize and to view, which business units would most benefit from servitization. By offering a starting point for manufacturers, the framework facilitates identifying servitization gaps and understanding the required scope of change to achieve the service strategy goals set.",

"abstractNote": "Innovation studies are currently increasingly emphasising participatory models where employees and customers are engaged in innovation activities. This study analyses employees’ participation in professional service firms’ innovation and development activities with the help of social system theories. Social structures are studied from the perspective of goals and roles of different employees in innovation and development activities in five professional service firms. The findings show that there existed a variety of innovation and development subsystems in each case firm, each having own goals and participants. Five role structure types were identified in these systems, varying from centralised to dispersed mode; in all of them the emphasis was on individually negotiated roles of different employees, instead of formally established ones. These results suggests that instead of treating a professional service organisation as a synchronous entity that follows a specific organisational mode of innovation activities, innovation studies should take into account the diversity of different modes that exist simultaneously in such organisational context.",

"abstractNote": "This paper investigates the concept of success in internal development programmes. The theoretical approach of organisational effectiveness is used to analyse literature of programme management and empirical data from four case programmes with 24 informants. Perceptions of informants on the success factors and success criteria of internal development programmes are classified using the competing values model of organisational effectiveness and differences in the perceptions of informants are evaluated. The usability of the competing values model in programme context is evaluated and the implications of the conflicting perceptions of success are discussed. Based on the analysis we identify four key areas of programme success and evaluate the implications of this focus on the management of programmes.\n\nKeywords: development programme, programme management, success criteria, success factor, organisational effectiveness, competing values model",

In order to carry out this function, KIBS have to be innovative themselves. The paper in hand describes the plan and early stages of a study KIBSINET which examines KIBS’ innovation activities at the firm level, at the level of individual innovation processes and at the network level. The firm level analysis focuses on those mechanisms in which KIBS stimulate and channel their innovativeness. The study of individual processes covers both planned and unplanned processes leading to innovations. One aim is to find ways in which innovations emerging outside the planned projects could be recognised early and linked effectively to the knowledge-base of companies. In the analysis of the structures and characteristics of networks, suitable network arrangements for different phases of innovation processes are searched for. The framework of the study is the Finnish real estate and construction cluster and KIBS serving that cluster.",

"abstractNote": "Change programs are temporary organizations in which multiple projects are managed together to deliver a change in the program’s permanent parent organization. Change programs are embedded in their wider organizational context, and the programs’ boundaries need to be managed. The purpose of this study is to examine boundary management between the temporary change program and the permanent parent organization. Based on the identification of different types of boundary activities we examine change programs’ different boundary management profiles and their performance effects. Our data consists of questionnaire survey responses from 131 program managers of recently completed change programs. The analysis reveals five distinct types of boundary management activities, including both integrative and isolative efforts. Three types of boundary management profiles of change programs are identified based on the varying emphasis on isolative and integrative activities. The analysis shows that while programs with any of the three boundary management profiles can be implemented on time, on budget and in an efficient manner, the balanced profile with active integration and isolation is the most successful in terms of achieving program team satisfaction and longer term organizational effects. The study contributes to the research on temporary organizing by showing evidence on the nature and importance of boundary management between a temporary change program and its permanent parent organization. Several avenues for future research are discussed, including the role of contextual factors in integration and isolation, and the interplay between formal integration mechanisms and informal boundary management.",
