"abstractNote": "Violence and Racism in Football examines how social anxieties about government repression, immigration, and unemployment were represented and contested through violence and racist aggression at football matches from the late 1960s to the 1990s. Rather than examining football per se, the principal aim is to investigate how this distinct cultural milieu became a site for the reproduction and performance of racial and class tensions, masculinity, and racist violence. Professional British football provides a window through which to reconsider important debates about the cultural and social make-up of postwar British society, including how politicians, state agencies and working-class Britons contributed to them.\n\nFirst, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, violence among fans and with police became expected on a weekly basis within and outside football stadiums. Though football “hooliganism” has received much attention from sociologists, anthropologists and criminologists, my research attempts to historicize and contextualize football violence, revealing that many spectators attributed their violent conduct to concerns about immigration, job and housing competition, and the state’s approach to working-class social conflict. Successive governments from both major parties repressed these customary expressions of community solidarity and discontent, increasing the policing, security measures and punishment of rowdy football spectatorship. These actions have not been analyzed in detail. This research reveals how the state created a “total policy of containment” that aimed to demonize working-class supporters, discipline them through reorganizing spatial environments in stadiums, monitor them through increased police networks, and punish them to fulfill expectations in a renewed “law-and-order” society. Through the Department of the Environment, the Home Office, and local police agencies, politicians and sports authorities approached this embarrassing phenomenon by reviving class discourses and meeting violence with their own repressive measures. These measures paradoxically escalated violent conflict, ignoring its relationship to broader social fissures and cultural dialogues. During these key years, state efforts to sanitize football were shortsighted, unsuccessful and challenged postwar social democratic promises. In the end, state authorities, politicians, supporters and the press engaged in a struggle of representation over football’s meanings and purpose, threatening ideas of British national mythology, multicultural harmony, and class compromise. Football became a microcosm of the social tensions occurring outside the football stadium on the local and national levels.\n\nSecond, from the late 1970s to the 1990s, the negotiation of a new social fracture emerged as black football players increasingly achieved sporting prominence. To some fans, they came to represent perceived problems external to the football environment. Spectators expressed their aversion to thriving black laborers in Britain’s national sport through routine racial abuse and racial violence. Within the community-based arena of football spectatorship, concerns about labor, housing, and immigration coincided with the maintenance of shifting masculine values of loyalty and working-class “Britishness.” These events challenged the emergent national mythology of a peaceful, multiethnic Britain, and spawned several anti-racist measures continuous with those used previously against football violence. In effort to again sanitize the sport of unwanted elements, British football became a cultural location where several groups self-consciously contested and manipulated racial and class conflict. Activists from the neo-fascist National Front, several grassroots anti-racist organizations, the Home Office responsible for public order, the national press, and everyday supporters all participated in debates about how football should reflect British society. Consequently, the football environment not only mirrored social and political hostilities, but produced them, as competing interest groups attempted to manipulate the British social landscape through the sport.",

"abstractNote": "This book is the first overview of Wales in the period from the Second World War to the early years of devolution. Drawing upon in-depth research, it offers an incisive account of an important phase in British history from the perspective of a nation that is too often overlooked.\n\nThe period since 1939 saw more rapid and significant change than any other time in Welsh history. Wales developed a more assertive identity of its own and some of the apparatus of a nation state. Yet its economy floundered between boom and bust, its traditional communities were transformed and the Welsh language and other aspects of its distinctiveness were undermined by a globalizing world. Wales was also deeply divided by class, language, ethnicity, gender, religion and region. Its people grew wealthier, healthier and more educated but they were not always happier. This ground-breaking book examines the story of Wales since 1939, giving voice to ordinary people and the variety of experiences within the nation. This is a history of not just a nation, but of its residents’ hopes and fears, their struggles and pleasures and their views of where they lived and the wider world.\n\nA significant contribution to ideas on national identity and to public debates on Welshness and Britishness in a devolved UK, Wales since 1939 embraces topics as wide ranging as the Aberfan disaster, the miners’ strikes and the flooding of Tryweryn to the impacts of consumerism, rugby and popular music. It will appeal to anyone interested in the recent history of both Wales and Britain, and in British social and political history more generally.",

"abstractNote": "Migration and Empire provides a unique comparison of the motives, means, and experiences of three main flows of empire migrants. During the nineteenth century, the proportion of UK migrants heading to empire destinations, especially to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, increased substantially and remained high. These migrants included so-called 'surplus women' and 'children in need', shipped overseas to ease perceived social problems at home. Empire migrants also included entrepreneurs and indentured labourers from south Asia, Africa, and the Pacific (together with others from the Far East, outside the empire), who relocated in huge numbers with equally transformative effects in, for example, central and southern Africa, the Caribbean, Ceylon, Mauritius, and Fiji. The UK at the core of empire was also the recipient of empire migrants, especially from the 'New Commonwealth' after 1945. These several migration flows are analysed with a strong appreciation of the commonality and the complex variety of migrant histories. The volume includes discussion of the work of philanthropists (especially with respect to single women and 'children in care') as well as governments and entrepreneurs in organising much empire migration, and the business of recruiting, assisting, and transporting selected empire migrants. Attention is given to immigration controls that restricted the settlement of some non-white migrants, and to the mixture of motives explaining return-migration. The book concludes by indicating why the special relationship between empire and migration came to an end. Legacies remain, but by the 1970s political change and shifts in the global labour market had eroded the earlier patterns.",

"abstractNote": "\"For nearly half of the eighteenth century, the exiled Stuart Court provided an important British presence in Rome. It acted as a surrogate embassy for the many Grand Tourists passing through the city - Hanoverian Whigs as well as Tories and Jacobites - and as a significant social and cultural centre. This book presents the first complete study of the Court of the exiled Stuart King James III, offering a significant reassessment of its importance and of the lives of the Stuarts and their courtiers, and their relations with the Popes, cardinals and princely families of Rome. Edward Corp's interdisciplinary approach also reveals the Stuarts' patronage of leading portrait painters, their influence on the development of Italian opera, and the impact of theirCourt buildings on relations with their supporters. This book will be essential reading for everyone with an interest in Jacobitism, Italian culture and the eighteenth-century Grand Tour\"--",

"abstractNote": "Andrew Marvell's celebrated poetic ambivalence to the philosophical, political and religious controversies of mid-seventeenth century England is the subject of this book, which includes major new historical readings of his most important lyrics and political verse, incorporating material from hitherto unpublished contemporary manuscripts. It places the poetic imagination of Marvell and his contemporaries - such as John Milton, Henry Vaughan, Abraham Cowley, Margaret Cavendish, William Davenant, and Thomas Fairfax - into the context of the turbulent public events of the time; and demonstrates Marvell's hitherto unnoticed connection with the liberal, rational and sceptical thinkers associated with the Great Tew circle. It also argues that Marvell's `middle way' in theology is bound up with his ambivalence towards the Calvinist God. Takashi Yoshinaka took his D.Phil. at the University of Oxford, and is Professor of English in the Graduate School of Letters, Hiroshima University.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, imperial history has experienced a newfound vigour, dynamism and diversity. There has been an explosion of new work in the field, which has been driven into even greater prominence by contemporary world events. However, this resurgence has brought with it disputes between those who are labelled as exponents of a ?new imperial history? and those who can, by default, be termed old imperial historians. This collection not only gathers together some of the most important, influential and controversial work which has come to be labelled ?new imperial history?, but also presents key examples of innovative recent writing across the broader fields of imperial and colonial studies. This book is the perfect companion for any student interested in empires and global history.",

"abstractNote": "Identities and Social Change in Britain since 1940 examines how, between 1940 and 1970 British society was marked by the imprint of the academic social sciences in profound ways which have an enduring legacy on how we see ourselves. It focuses on how interview methods and sample surveys eclipsed literature and the community study as a means of understanding ordinary life. The book shows that these methods were part of a wider remaking of British national identity in the aftermath of decolonisation in which measures of the rational, managed nation eclipsed literary and romantic ones. It also links the emergence of social science methods to the strengthening of technocratic and scientific identities amongst the educated middle classes, and to the rise in masculine authority which challenged feminine expertise. This book is the first to draw extensively on archived qualitative social science data from the 1930s to the 1960s, which it uses to offer a unique, personal and challenging account of post war social change in Britain. It also uses this data to conduct a new kind of historical sociology of the social sciences, one that emphasises the discontinuities in knowledge forms and which stresses how disciplines and institutions competed with each other for reputation. Its emphasis on how social scientific forms of knowing eclipsed those from the arts and humanities during this period offers a radical re-thinking of the role of expertise today which will provoke social scientists, scholars in the humanities, and the general reader alike.",

"abstractNote": "Eighteenth-century British culture is often seen as polite and sentimental—the product of an emerging middle class. Simon Dickie contests these assumptions in Cruelty and Laughter, a wildly enjoyable but shocking plunge into the forgotten comic literature of the age. Beneath the veneer of Enlightenment civility, Dickie uncovers a rich strain of cruel humor that forces us to recognize just how slowly ordinary sufferings became worthy of sympathy. Delving into an enormous archive of jestbooks, comic periodicals, farces, variety shows, and minor comic novels, Dickie discovers a bottomless repository of jokes about cripples, blind men, rape, and wife-beating. He also finds epigrams about scurvy and one-act farces about hunchbacks in love, powerful proofs of the limits of compassion in the period. Everyone—rich and poor, women as well as men—laughed along. In the process, Dickie expands our understanding of many of the century’s major authors, including Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Tobias Smollett, Frances Burney, and Jane Austen. Cruelty and Laughter is an engaging, far-reaching study of the other side of culture in eighteenth-century Britain.",
