"abstractNote": "In safety-related industrial systems, stringent timelines and a high degree of reliability in communications are required. Networking protocols have to be certified using a mathematical framework that ascertains the end-to-end communication delay of flows is upper bounded. The recently created IETF 6TiSCH networking stack is a promising candidate to offer realtime communication services as communications are scheduled at the link layer in time and frequency. Its 6top sublayer manages the way communication resources are scheduled and thus messages routed. This paper proposes a novel certifiable resource allocation algorithm for multi-hop 6TiSCH wireless networks that simultaneously offers high reliability, low end-to-end delay and low energy consumption for safety-related industrial applications. The schedules are defined such as to directly derive a bound on the worst-case end-to-end delay. Schedules are fixed and computed by solving a multi-objective optimization problem. Two different problems are defined. The first one designs a deterministic schedule and the other one a probabilistic schedule where node are assigned a probability to forward a message in a TSCH cell. We show in our results that the latter method offers better performance in terms of robustness as possible losses due to fading are compensated for by cyclic path redundancies.",

"abstractNote": "Wireless networks have become a very attractive solution for soft real-time data transport in the industry. For such technologies to carry real-time traffic, reliable bounds on end-to-end communication delays have to be ascertained to warrant a proper system behavior. As for legacy wired embedded and real-time networks, two main wireless multiple access methods can be leveraged: one is time division multiple access (TDMA), which follows a time-triggered paradigm, and the other is carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), which follows an event-triggered paradigm. This paper proposes an analytical comparison of the time behavior of two representative TDMA and CSMA/CA protocols in terms of the worst-case end-to-end delay. This worst-case delay is expressed in a probabilistic manner because our analytical framework captures the versatility of the wireless medium. Analytical delay bounds are obtained from delay distributions, which are compared to fine-grained simulation results. Exhibited study cases show that TDMA can offer smaller or larger worst-case bounds than CSMA/CA depending on its settings.",

"note": "<p>This paper presents a combination of three mechanisms to provide end-to-end latency guarantees in CPS communicating over wireless interfaces. It assumes communication messages that are sporadic, and potentially with release jitter.</p>\n<p>The first mechanism is the so-called Bold interconnect, which provides a bidirectional FIFO-based interface between two processing cores, one of them used to process application tasks and the other to handle the wireless communication protocols. By using such approach, the authors hope to avoid interference between computation and communication. The FIFO-based interface is encapsulated by a simple API that has known latency upper-bounds.</p>\n<p>The second mechanism is the use of the Blink protocol, but authors claim that the approach could be adapted to use other protocols. Blink is based on globally time-triggered communication rounds that all devices use to perform multi-hop communication. Each round has a fixed duration C_net and a fixed period T_net between rounds. Within each round, a maximum number M of messages can be sent over M exclusive slots. During runtime, a network manager can tune the value of T_net according to the communication traffic demands, but this is kept between implementation-specific upper and lower bounds.</p>\n<p>Blink is able to guarantee delivery of all messages within their deadlines, but assumes that messages are delivered to its interface periodically, and with a known initial phase. Because of that, the authors had to provide a mechanism, described below, to regulate the delivery of flows to the Blink interface to match its assumption even thought the system assumes messages can be sporadic and jittery.</p>\n<p>The third mechanism is referred to as \"contracts\" by the authors, and they are in fact ways to partition end-to-end deadlines into smaller deadlines that are then assigned to each one of the previously described mechanisms. By setting periods and phases for Blink, it is possible to bound the wireless communication latencies. Consequently, it is necessary to tune the applications to use the Bolt APIs accordingly to read and write outgoing packets in a way that prevents buffer overflows and underflows (since at that point, Blink will follow a fixed schedule and will assume a well-behaved production and consumption rate). &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>",

"abstractNote": "WirelessHART is a secure and reliable communication standard for industrial process automation. The WirelessHART specifications are well organized in all aspects except security: there are no separate specifications of security requirements or features. Rather, security mechanisms are described throughout the documentation. This hinders implementation of the standard and development of applications since it requires profound knowledge of all the core specifications on the part of the developer. In this paper we provide a comprehensive overview of WirelessHART security: we analyze the provided security mechanisms against well known threats in the wireless medium, and propose recommendations to mitigate shortcomings. Furthermore, we elucidate the specifications of the security manager, its placement in the network, and interaction with the network manager.",

"abstractNote": "Technologies to support the Internet of Things are becoming more important as the need to better understand our environments and make them smart increases. As a result it is predicted that intelligent devices and networks, such as WSNs, will not be isolated, but connected and integrated, composing computer networks. So far, the IP-based Internet is the largest network in the world; therefore, there are great strides to connect WSNs with the Internet. To this end, the IETF has developed a suite of protocols and open standards for accessing applications and services for wireless resource constrained networks. However, many open challenges remain, mostly due to the complex deployment characteristics of such systems and the stringent requirements imposed by various services wishing to make use of such complex systems. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the current approaches to standardization in this area can be improved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the IoT field. To this end, this article presents an overview of current standards and research activities in both industry and academia.",

"abstractNote": "Eboracum is an extensible modeling simulation framework for evaluation of reactive and adaptable wireless sensor networks (WSN), which provides high-level primitives for modeling platform and application aspects of WSNs. Combining application to environment-generated workload and computing/communication infrastructure, this framework allows to evaluate the efficiency of WSN configurations with regards to metrics that are meaningful to specific application domains and respective end-users. In this work, we demonstrate that Eboracum can be easily extended to support different types of nodes, events, as well as dynamic adaptability strategies. Moreover, this work discusses how to employ Eboracum to evaluate load balancing strategies and describe two different realistic scenarios, extending its primitives, for instance, to support mobile nodes and trigger events.",

"abstractNote": "We consider the scenario of wireless sensor networks where a given application has to be deployed and each application task has to be assigned to each node in the best possible way. Approaches where decisions on task execution are taken by a single central node can avoid the exchange of data packets between task execution nodes but cannot adapt to dynamic network conditions, and suffer from computational complexity. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose an adaptive and decentralized task allocation negotiation algorithm (TAN) for cluster network topologies. It is based on noncooperative game theory, where neighboring nodes engage in negotiations to maximize their own utility functions to agree on which of them should execute single application tasks. Performance is evaluated in a city scenario, where the urban streets are equipped with different sensors and the application target is the detection of the fastest way to reach a destination, and in random WSN scenarios. Comparisons are made with three other algorithms: 1) baseline setting with no task assignment to multiple nodes; 2) centralized task assignment lifetime optimization; and 3) a dynamic distributed algorithm, DLMA. The result is that TAN outperforms these algorithms in terms of application completion time and average energy consumption.",

"abstractNote": "Nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming more and more complex systems with the capabilities to run distributed structured applications. Which single task should be implemented by each WSN node needs to be decided by the application deployment strategy by taking into account both network lifetime and execution time requirements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive decentralised algorithm based on noncooperative game theory, where neighbouring nodes negotiate among each other to maximize their utility function. We then prove that an increment of the nodes utility corresponds to the same increment of the utility for the whole network. Simulation results show significant performance improvement with respect to existing algorithms.",
