Students first learn Wikipedia policies and practices and analyze the historical development of articles before they make contributions. The pedagogical opportunities arguably outweigh the concerns of those who doubt the credibility of an open-authored encyclopedia.",

This study followed a first-year class of undergraduate, liberal arts students over the course of their first semester to see how they used, were influenced about, and rated Wikipedia. Data was collected via two surveys of the first-year class, as well as focus groups and a survey of college faculty. This study found that first-year students are uncertain about the variety of ways to use information sources like Wikipedia, and that a direct and balanced approach to this area from instructors may lead to better outcomes than strict prohibition or silence.",

"abstractNote": "Gender is one of the most pervasive and insidious forms of inequality. For example, English-language Wikipedia contains more than 1.5 million biographies about notable writers, inventors, and academics, but less than 19% of these biographies are about women. To try and improve these statistics, activists host “edit-a-thons” to increase the visibility of notable women. While this strategy helps create several biographies previously inexistent, it fails to address a more inconspicuous form of gender exclusion. Drawing on ethnographic observations, interviews, and quantitative analysis of web-scraped metadata, this article demonstrates that biographies about women who meet Wikipedia’s criteria for inclusion are more frequently considered non-notable and nominated for deletion compared to men’s biographies. This disproportionate rate is another dimension of gender inequality previously unexplored by social scientists and provides broader insights into how women’s achievements are (under)valued.",

"abstractNote": "As students increasingly rely on digital media to locate information, composition instructors must incorporate into writing instruction critical evaluation of and reflection on students' use of Web content. A growing problem in the composition class is underdeveloped critical digital literacy skills. To become fully literate, students need more practice in thinking critically about the evidence they choose to use in their academic arguments. Wikipedia, the free, online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is often cited as part of the problem. Instead of penalizing students for using Wikipedia as their go-to research source, writing faculty should encourage students to critically analyze this online encyclopedia in order to teach them how to think critically about all texts, online and in print. This article discusses how Wikipedia can be a valuable site for developing critical digital literacy skills for students. (Contains 1 note.)",

"abstractNote": "Students in a senior English class examined the question of whether the 'wisdom of experts' or 'the wisdom of crowds' is more reliable and useful in a writing course by engaging in a parallel Wikipedia project. Each student either created a new entry or made significant changes to an existing Wikipedia entry, tracked changes to their contributions, and then wrote a paper and gave a presentation reflecting on what they learned; simultaneously, the class as a whole collaborated on a Wikipedia entry about a local landmark's controversy. Background readings familiarizing students with Wikipedia's procedures, as well as critical and philosophical interpretations of Wikipedia's significance, provided students perspective on Wikipedia's utility. While the instructor expected students to enter with an uncritical understanding of Wikipedia's reliability and then to see Wikipedia's fundamental untrustworthiness, students' work demonstrated that they entered the class skeptical about Wikipedia and that their projects showed them that Wikipedia was mostly reliable and useful. In this experiment, students showed that they were at an intermediate stage of \"personal epistemology\" and still had not achieved the level of reflective judgment sought by the school's information-literacy competency goals.",

"abstractNote": "Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to investigate which learning targets can be achieved by using Wikipedia as a tool for teaching information literacy within the context of brief one-shot library instruction sessions. Design/methodology/approach -- In this case study, a Wikipedia-editing activity was incorporated into 2-hour one-shot instruction sessions. A variety of qualitative data were collected during these sessions: Student reflections during a facilitated discussion, student responses to exit-survey questions and instructor observations about the extent to which students completed Wikipedia-editing tasks. Findings -- Students found Wikipedia-editing activities and Wikipedia-related discussions engaging, and as a result they seemed to learn valuable lessons about research and writing. Students participating in this project effectively identified gaps in Wikipedia entries, critically evaluated and used sources to address those gaps and appropriately documented those materials. Students were easily encouraged to be critical about information sources, including Wikipedia and the more traditionally scholarly resources alike. Originality/value -- While a great deal of attention has been paid to teaching with multi-week Wikipedia assignments and coursework, evidence from this project suggests that Wikipedia-related activities can be used effectively within much narrower time constraints, including during brief one-shot library instruction sessions.",

"abstractNote": "Research across disciplines in recent years has demonstrated a number of gains involved in community engagement and service-learning pedagogies. More recently, these pedagogies are being filtered into digital contexts as instructors begin to realize the opportunities made available by online writing venues. This presentation describes a specific pedagogical model which sought to engage composition students in two specific communities, 1) the University libraries' Special Collections (Archives), and 2) the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Student-participants in this study performed original research within Special Collections on regional topics in order to edit and create corresponding Wikipedia articles. The presentation ultimately argues that such a pedagogical model leads to an increase in students' rhetorical knowledge and motivation levels, while at the same time promoting public awareness of library resources and contributing to public knowledge via Wikipedia.",

She then redesigned her course to leverage Wikipedia as a source of inquiry. In other words, she \"allows\" Wikipedia, but through the Wikipedia project, which is designed to address the deeper issue of students needing better information literacy. The Wikipedia project requires students to contribute their research to Wikipedia, building off a recently published Instructional Note in \"Teaching English in the Two-Year College\" that had students rhetorically analyze Wikipedia. Students contribute their research to Wikipedia, thereby improving their ability to evaluate online sources and revise their writing for different purposes and audiences. By contributing to Wikipedia, students switch from consumers to producers and subsequently change their relationship with Wikipedia, thereby increasing their information literacy and enhancing their multimedia composing processes. "abstractNote": "From the Publisher: Focusing largely on the controversial website Wikipedia, the author explores the challenges confronting teachers of college writing in the increasingly electronic and networked writing environments their students use every day. Rather than praising or condemning that site for its role as an encyclopedia, Cummings instead sees it as a site for online collaboration between writers and a way to garner audience for student writing. Applying an understanding of Commons-Based Peer Production theory, as developed by Yochai Benkler, this text is arranged around the following propositions: Commons-Based Peer Production is a novel economic phenomenon which informs our current teaching model and describes a method for making sense of future electronic developments. College writers are motivated to do their best work when they write for an authentic audience, external to the class. Writing for a networked knowledge community invites students to participate in making knowledge, rather than only consuming it. A plan for integrating networked writing for an external audience helps students understand the transition from high school to college writing. Allowing students to review and self-select points of entry into electronic discourse fosters \"laziness,\" or a new work dynamic where writers seek to better understand their own creativity in terms of a project's demands. Lazy Virtues offers networked writing assignments to foster development of student writers by exposing them to the demands of professional audiences, asking them to identify and assess their own creative impulses in terms of a project's needs, and removing the writing teacher from the role of sole audience.",

"abstractNote": "One of the biggest challenges faced by social media sites like Wikipedia is how to motivate users to contribute content. Research continues to demonstrate that only a small percentage of users contribute to user-generated content sites. In this study we assess the results of a Wikimedia Foundation initiative, which had graduate and undergraduate students from 22 U.S. universities contribute content to Wikipedia articles as part of their coursework. 185 students were asked about their participation in the initiative and their intention to participate on Wikipedia in the future. Results suggest that intentions to continue contributing are influenced by the initial attitude towards the class, and the degree to which students perceived they were writing for a global audience.",
