Musuems were unable to agreed on a data standard and this hurt automation initiatives. Museums fell behind libraries in automation. With the rise of computers in the workplace museums begain developing databas and other systems at their own institutions. Later collaboration became yet more difficult because the systems the institutions developed were incompatible.</p>\n<p>I think it would be intersting to map our timeline on a board LIS timeline.             "note": "<h2>Reading Notes: (Shared Copy)</h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This was an excellect reource that serves well as a review of key literature. (p. 261)</li>\n<li>The authors also point out that capturing information in a museum is a difficult task because it is complex and information exists at several levels simultaneously. (p. 262)</li>\n<li>Lack of cooperation early on led to museums developing systems seperately and these weren't extremely compatible for sharing information with one another. (p. 265)</li>\n<li>The author lists several benefits that could be enjoyed if museums developed a common standard form documenting musuem artifacts. (p. 267)</li>\n<li>Types of data sharing initiatives are mentioned by the authors, all seems to have had limited success although I am unfamiliar with the particulars. (p. 267)</li>\n<li>Standardized use of terminolgy has had some success (p. 267)</li>\n<li>The authors mention that even within a \"wired museum\" some important information exists outside of the systems and off line. (p. 268)</li>\n<li>The authors reference Orna and Pettitt's discussion fo the the \"meaning of information in a museum context\", while later referencing Marty's own investigation in for the communication dynamics within museums. (p.  270)</li>\n<li>The authors note collaboration efforts including AMICO and CHIN as well as research into a long term project in Austrailia called the Austrailian Museums and Galleries Online. (p. 271)</li>\n<li>Some studies have investigated museum professionals themselves. (p. 272)</li>\n<li>There has been significant research into the potential  ability of electronic information to increase the value of museum objects themselves. See Hoopes 1997 and Hickerson 1997. (p. 274)</li>\n<li>Opales project referenced by the authors could be seen as a predecessor to the Smithosonian Common / Smithosonian 2.0 initiative. (p. 274)</li>\n<li>The author address fears with in the museum communitiy about the changing role of the museum.
