            "abstractNote": "The role of peer relationships in supporting or hindering adolescents' talent development\nhas received little research attention, despite the importance of peers\nin adolescents' lives. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 41\nadolescents talented in sports or the arts, and their parents, to investigate (a) the role of peer relationships in adolescents' continued involvement in their talent\nactivities, (b) possible differences in this role by activity domain, and (c) possible\ngender differences. Thematic analysis indicated that peers typically played a\npositive function in supporting the continued involvement of talented adolescents\nin their talent activities. There were differences in opportunities for peer relationships\nand social satisfaction between in-school and out-of school activities, but\nnot between activity domains. Both males and females mentioned equally social\nbenefits of such involvement. However, females mentioned receiving negative peer\nattention more frequently than males, and more often cited social dissatisfaction\nas a significant contributor to decreased involvement or quitting.",

            "abstractNote": "Release time programs allow public school students to be excused from classes to receive offsite spiritual instruction during school hours. With the passage of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, schools are under increasing pressure to raise test scores, which has led to questions about the advisability of allowing students to miss classes. In the face of these concerns, this study examined the relationship between release time participation and academic outcomes in a large urban school district. Contrary to what might be expected, participation in release time was not associated with lower academic test scores. The article also explores the possibility that release time may represent a form of social capital, particularly in low-income neighborhoods, helping to instill values that directly and indirectly help students to achieve academically.",

            "extra": "Adolescent participation in extracurricular activities is associated with numerous positive outcomes yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship are largely unknown. This study had two goals: to investigate the association between participation in extracurricular activities and indicators of positive and negative development for Australian adolescents; and to determine if these associations were mediated by the characteristics of adolescents’ friends. Extracurricular participation was positively associated with higher academic track enrolment university aspirations and school belonging and negatively associated with skipping school; participation in team sports was related to greater alcohol use. In addition friend characteristics were found to mediate the association between activity participation and developmental indicators.",

            "abstractNote": "Extracurricular activity participation (EAP) is a formalized opportunity for youth to experience non-classroom-based, prosocial programming. A considerable amount of research, using both cross-sectional and longitudinal samples, has found important relationships between EAP and a decreased likelihood of dropping out and substance use, as well as an increased likelihood of academic achievement and prosocial behavior. The importance of EAP upon prosocial behavior has been widely held, yet little research has examined the process by which youth develop a sense of connectedness to school, particularly with minority youth. Since most studies on extracurricular activity participation have been limited to largely European American samples, the participation rates of non-European American students is unknown. This article uses data collected from a large, diverse sample of students, to examine EAP participation rates among European American, Hispanic American, African American, and Asian American students. The relationship between EAP and school connectedness is examined, and the implications of these results for the education community is discussed. (Contains 1 table.)",

            "abstractNote": "This article reviews the contemporary literature on school-based activity participation, focusing on patterns of participation, academic achievement, substance use, sexual activity, psychological adjustment, delinquency, and young adult outcomes. Also, the authors discuss possible mediators and moderators of extracurricular activity participation in regard to adolescent development. The review indicates that the associations between school-based activity participation and these outcomes are mostly positive but that the picture becomes mixed once moderator variables are included. The authors suggest areas for future research that include using new methods for measuring activities and applying an overarching theoretical framework to investigations of extracurricular activities and adolescent development. Finally, to move toward a causal model of activities and adolescent functioning, future research must consider the mechanisms through which activities exert their influence on development. The authors propose several possible mechanisms of participation in terms of adjustment during adolescence and young adulthood.",

            "abstractNote": "This report presents information on similarities and differences between U.S. high school sophomores as studied at three points in time over the past 22 years, with a focus on cohort demographics, academic programs and performance, extracurricular activities, life values, and educational/occupational aspirations. It provides an update to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report published in 1993, \"America's High School Sophomores: A Ten Year Comparison\" (Rasinski et al. 1993). This report uses data from the following NCES studies: (1) sophomores in 1980, as studied in High School and Beyond (HS&B); (2) sophomores in 1990, as studied in the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88); and (3) sophomores in 2002, as studied in the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002). The report is descriptive, serving to update published information on the HS&B and NELS:88 sophomore surveys with additional information from ELS:2002 for selected comparable questionnaire items. Secondary purposes are to note qualifications and limitations to the survey-based data comparisons and also to note related additional information from other data sources, such as the Current Population Survey (CPS), over the same period. With a few additions, the topics selected for the report are based on those selected for inclusion in the previous report comparing the 1980 and 1990 sophomores (Rasinski et al. 1993). The primary focus of this report is observation of change over the period for national averages and for subgroupings that have been of traditional interest to the NCES longitudinal studies. Appended are: (1) Technical Notes and Glossary; and (2) Standard Error Tables. (Contains 77 tables and 22 figures.) [This report was also produced by Kforce Government Solutions.]",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to discover the self-reported reasons for involvement in after-school, extracurricular music and athletic activities of high school students. One hundred-sixty high school students participating in either extracurricular athletic or musical activities served as subjects. Extracurricular activities were defined as un-graded activities offered beyond the regular school day. An open-ended, free response questionnaire was used to determine what personal factors students felt contributed most to their reasons for choosing to participate in extracurricular activities. Questionnaires were analyzed for similarities and differences and responses were coded and categorized. Four distinct categories of subject responses emerged from the analyses: \"Social/Integrative,\" \"Kinesthetic,\" \"Self-Esteem,\" and \"Self-Efficacy.\" Athlete and musician participants shared similar reasons for participating in extracurricular activities. Both groups articulated satisfaction in sharing their athletic or musical activity with others; a need for physical expression/release through musical or athletic movement; positive feelings of self-worth as a result of participation; and a sense of self-confidence in their ability to participate successfully in athletic and musical endeavors. Conclusions and implications for future study are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "The Minnesota Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Plus project augmented the DARE curriculum with community, parent involvement, and extracurricular activity components. Of the 24 schools in the DARE Plus project, the 8 receiving the DARE Plus intervention are examined in this study. The association of participation in the extracurricular activities component of the DARE Plus project with adolescent substance use is investigated. The  intervention targeted the class of 2005 from seventh to eighth grade (1999-2001). As part of the intervention, students participated in extracurricular activities planned by peer leaders, and annual surveys measured substance use and psychosocial outcomes. After 2 years students overall and boys participating in extracurricular activities had significantly less alcohol use and fewer intentions to use alcohol than did nonparticipants. Asian American  participants had significantly less tobacco use and fewer intentions to use tobacco compared with nonparticipants. The results suggest an association between extracurricular activity participation in DARE Plus and lower rates of substance use, especially among boys, and suggest that such participation can be helpful for youth of varying ethnicities. Further research is needed to more rigorously evaluate this association using an experimental design. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)",

            "abstractNote": "Utilizing a single-group interrupted time series design (Creswell, 2003), this pilot study examined the relationship between academic achievement, school bonding, and the extracurricular activity participation of \"uninvolved\" students (n=11) who participated in a voluntary support group at a suburban high school in the southeast. Results indicated that while involvement in the voluntary support group did not have a significant effect on the school bonding of students, involvement in the voluntary support group may have had a significant effect on the academic achievement of the students. These findings suggest that professional school counselors, school officials, and community agency personnel can collaborate and use extracurricular activities to help target the academic achievement of other uninvolved or off-track students.",
