Using the Lexis/Nexis on-line database, we collected articles from the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, the Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. These papers were chosen either for their agenda-setting influence (i.e., New York Times, Wall Street Journal) or wide circulation (i.e., USA Today). \nFindings: By examining the discourse surrounding STDs, this study provides a baseline assessment of how the problem of STDs is being presented to the American public through the print news media.",

"abstractNote": "The objective was to determine how the Internet is used to promote sexual health among adolescents. Six key words were entered into three search engines producing 87,180 results. Three percent (n = 36) were educational Web sites targeted at teenagers and covered a range of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These were content analyzed using sexuality education and usability guidelines. All sites addressed some STD information, but only two covered negotiation. Navigability results were mixed; only one third offered a site map. Sexual health educators may need to include more information on how to negotiate safe sex and improve Web navigability for teenagers.",

Early health care seeking was determined by perceived seriousness of STDs, an absence of self treatment prior to seeking care and positive attitudes regarding personal autonomy in condom use behaviour. "abstractNote": "Purpose: The study aimed to determine the factors associated with a delay in seeking health care for symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among a sample of 1482 patients attending STD clinics.\nFindings: Of the sample 78% were male, 58% sought help from the clinic within the first 6 days of noticing symptoms, 24% waited between 7 and 10 days and 17% waited longer than 10 days before seeking health care. Patients who delayed were those who treated themselves prior to seeking health care, who were female, whose friends waited before seeking treatment, who held misconceptions regarding the cause of STDs, who perceived STDs not to be serious and who valued personal autonomy in sexual behaviours less and had less positive outcome expectations of refusing sex. The data suggest that targeted interventions should be directed specifically at women and the youth. Early health care seeking could be facilitated through improved basic knowledge regarding STDs, control over one’s own sexual behaviour and social support for early health care seeking.",

"abstractNote": "Purpose: the study investigates the knowledge and awareness about sexually transmitted infections, the general belief and attitudes related to HIV infection and persons with AIDS among secondary school students in Ogun State, Nigeria \nMethods: A questionnaire with questions on sexually transmitted infections, self-assessed knowledge about HIV/AIDS modes of transmission and prevention, attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS and sources of information on HIV/AIDS was administered. The mean age of participants was 15.5 years.\nFindings: The respondents demonstrated good knowledge on general belief mode of transmission and precautionary measures against HIV But few had misconceptions especially on modes of transmission. The proportion of respondents that demonstrated intolerant attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS ranged from 22.2% to 50.8% for the various questions which expressed stigmatising attitudes. The main sources of information for AIDS awareness as reported by the respondents were the radio (77.1%), bill boards/posters (73.4%), and television (66.4%). School teachers (22.6%), churches/mosques (20.9%), libraries (11.8%) and Internet (10.5%) were the least sources of information used. The results suggest that more information towards people living with HIV/AIDS awareness programmes are needed in secondary schools in Ogun State to correct their inadequate knowledge on modes of transmission knowledge, and develop positive attitudes among students towards HIV positives and AIDS patients. The paper recommends that the mass media, having been identified as the leading information sources need to implement innovative strategies to improve public knowledge of HIV/AIDS. The roles that teachers and librarians could play in the delivery of information on reproductive health education to promote awareness on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are also highlighted.",
