"abstractNote": "This research set out to examine in detail how eight first-time entrepreneurs went about finding out what they felt they needed to know during the first months of their business's operation, and in particular how they constructed their problems or questions in discourse and how they went about addressing them. Based on Brenda Dervin's Sense-Making methodology and work by Pamela McKenzie, the research involved semi-structured interviews in which participants were invited to recount specific instances of problems or questions they had experienced in their business. Data analysis involved close reading of both the interview transcripts and the researcher's notes and observations in order to draw out key themes and enable analysis of the discursive practices respondents used, particularly in privileging some information sources over others. The research found that the respondents experienced questions and problems largely relating to a small number of business issues, principally around the mechanics of setting up a company, deciding what kinds of services to provide and learning about the market environment in which they were operating. Like other studies of the information behaviour of small business owners, the research found that all of the respondents reported acting on information obtained from friends, colleagues or family. Most had consulted professional advisors, and all but one talked of using the Internet as a source of information. Only one respondent had sought assistance from an enterprise agency. The objectives of this research were twofold; to gather information about the actual behaviour of new entrepreneurs, and to test the potential usefulness of the sense-making methodology to an understanding of new business owners' information needs. Both of these objectives were largely met, with the research concluding that Sense-Making offers a valid and useful model with which to investigate the information behaviour of new entrepreneurs.",

It has been developed in tandem with the Auckland Plan through a series of discussions and research, and in partnership with:\n\nkey government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Economic Development, Department of Labour, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Innovation \nour Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) council controlled organisation (CCO) \nbusinesses and business organisations, including the Business Advisory Panel, Business Improvement Districts and business associations, and \nthe wider Auckland community.\nThe strategy is a call to action for a greater degree of investment and cooperation by business, industry, government and community organisations. It will guide Auckland’s economic development and the council’s planning and investment decisions over the next 10 years. \n\nThe Draft Economic Development Strategy has ambitious economic goals that include increasing Auckland’s annual average regional exports, real GDP, and productivity. \n\nTo achieve this, the strategy proposes five strategic directions and four cross-cutting themes to focus efforts. \n\nStrategic directions \nA business-friendly and well-functioning city \nAn innovation hub of the Asia-Pacific region \nInternationally connected and export driven \nInvesting in people to grow skills and local workforce \nA vibrant, creative world city \nCross-cutting themes \nCreating a sustainable eco economy \nFacilitating an iwi/Māori economic powerhouse \nDeveloping and enhancing an innovative rural and maritime economy \nSupporting a diverse ethnic economy",

They need to better solutions place in the market in a less time with less cost. There is a general intuition that knowledge management or collaboration, especially mixed with Web 2.0 approach within companies and ecosystems, can boost knowledge exploitation and innovation process with positive impacts on financial and market indicators. For many executives, when facing a buying decision for a new knowledge management, collaboration or Web 2.0 based solutions for their companies (sometimes also known as Enterprise 2.0) they need to understand its benefits and investment. \nThis chapter introduces some insights for the commercialization of knowledge management solutions from technology and marketing point of view. On the other hand it aims at pointing out some of the market trends for the next years where productivity and added value already are key for business processes. \nBased on some reports, data and forecasts from Forrester Research (http://www.forrester.com), Gartner (http://www.gartner.com), intelligence from some specialists on enterprise 2.0 solutions (http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/doug-miles/1/370/6a0), personal experience deploying projects in large companies (http://semtech2010.semanticuniverse.com/sessionPop.cfm?confid=42&proposalid=2920) and results from the R&D project ACTIVE (http://www.active-project.eu/) this chapter tries to illustrate some important challenges and promising paths to the mainstream market with semantically enabled knowledge management solutions.",

When referring to e-Government applications in Local Administrations, the above mentioned research fields have to be tackled, as the resulting systems need to be functional, easy to implement and maintain, capable of interconnecting with back-office systems and citizen and employee friendly. This paper shows that the conceptualization, design, implementation and maintenance of Municipality Service Portals can be standardized, following a specific methodology. Piloted in a Greek Municipality with almost 50,000 citizens and 3,000 businesses, the methodology comprises of (a) rapid process modeling with the use of BPMN-aware modeling tools, (b) CCTS-based data modeling (c) step-by-step adaptation of Content Management, Citizen Relationship and Workflow Systems, (d) SoA-enabled interconnections with back-office applications and (e) overall guidance based on Service Composition taxonomies.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract \nThis paper seeks a good measure of new business performance, and then explains this measure by various dimensions of business strategy. Three criteria are used to create a one dimensional ordinal ranking of high, medium and low performance for new business starts: employment growth; return on capital employed; and labour productivity. It is shown that statistical cluster analysis provides a convincing separation of a sample of new business starts into high, medium and low performance categories, using a minimum distance criterion for clustering. An ordinal logit model (with selection) is then used to explain this performance ranking. The results indicate that many widely discussed features of small business strategy have little, or even negative, impact on performance. Of the numerous aims that owner managers may adopt (survival, growth etc.), only one appears to have a major impact on performance; the pursuit of the highest rate of return on investment. Many entrepreneurial perceptions of their own capabilities appear false or unimportant, with the exception of organisational features and systems.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract \nThis paper is an empirical study, making appeal to firsthand evidence gathered by face-to-face interviews with the owner-managers of 150 small firms in Scotland. It investigates the performance of the micro firm in the early years of its life cycle, by reference to four key behavioural characteristics: (i) strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis; (ii) the gathering of trade intelligence on the firm''s rivals; (iii) the use of information technology (IT) in the business; and (iv) financial form and the owner-manager''s preferences as regards the form of their equity stake holding. Seven propositions, based on the evidence accumulated, are formulated, and tested. These are illustrated by boxplots and cross-tabulations, and supported with chi-square statistics for testing measures of association. Taken together, the data provide an illuminating picture of the strategic behaviour of the young micro firm, and the subsequent effect that actions can have on firm performance. In particular, it is found that the use of IT in clusters of devices has a highly significant positive association with performance.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract \nThe foundation of a business illustrates the first success, as a significant portion of those attempts to start a business fail (Gelderen et al., 2006). Business startups and new enterprises are, however, confronted with a multitude of different challenges and problems due to limited resources, insecurities, risks and deficiencies such as missing know-how and experience (Achleitner & Engel, 2001; Dowling & Drumm, 2003). Technology-oriented start-ups in particular have to cope with challenges that result from their innovative character (Nathusius, 2001) and a higher capital demand. To alleviate some of those problems, start-ups and new enterprises can use services and support offered by a variety of organisations and networks. The services and support activities cover variety areas such as education, supply of office space and capital, business plan competitions and coordination of networking events and other awards. These types of activities have a positive influence on the foundation, development and sustainment of new enterprises and small businesses that has been confirmed in the relevant literature (e.g. Gottschalk et al., 2007, Voigt et al, 2005). However, the existing studies into this topic are sparse and have generally taken a narrow scope by examining a single type of support organisation, for example Maggi (2001) examined technology and foundation centres in North Rhine-Westphalia. Schulte (2002) compared foundation centres in Germany (Ruhr) and the Netherlands (Utrecht) to analyse whether political expectations could be met. Achleitner and Engel (2003) conducted a survey in 2000 with 65 business incubators (the provision of office or workshop space for start-ups) in Germany.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract \nThis chapter examines how identity is related to the mobility of professionals who initiate expatriation. In this context a “professional” has a multifaceted identity in which career (a personal identity), family (a role identity) and cultural selves (a collective identity) are combined. These components vary in the degree to which they affect the motivation to expatriate or repatriate. \nHaving a career orientation as a salient component of identity is central to whether a professional initiates expatriation. Career and economic motivations are crucial. However, a career orientation is not why professionals repatriate. \nAn identity in which family roles are salient is associated with a professional – especially a woman – who chooses to expatriate to be with a partner and family. However, family and lifestyle motivations are central to repatriation. Nevertheless, professionals, especially women, follow the location of the primary family when making their decision. When an expatriate is embedded in the host community (e.g., when their partner is foreign born), they are more likely to remain abroad, especially if they are a woman. A woman’s family identity influences her decision to expatriate or repatriate to meet the needs of her partner and family. By contrast, a man’s identity, whereby he meets his career and financial needs and those of family provider, has a strong influence on his decisions. \nIdentification with the home country is a strong and enduring feature of an expatriate’s identity. Professionals prefer to expatriate to countries culturally similar to their own. Those who strongly identify with their national culture are more likely to repatriate. \nThe recommendations for a mobility strategy that takes these various motivations into account suggest that home-country governments need to provide incentives and initiatives if they are to gain professionals’ permanent, or temporary, return; to gain professionals’ remittances for the benefit of the family; and to capitalize on the diaspora to be able to use professionals’ identification with their home country to assist its welfare.",
