We produced a global, 30-m-resolution inland surface water dataset with an automated algorithm using Landsat-based surface reflectance estimates, multispectral water and vegetation indices, terrain metrics, and prior coarse-resolution water masks. The dataset identified 3,650,723 km2 of inland water globally – nearly three quarters of which was located in North America (40.65%) and Asia (32.77%), followed by Europe (9.64%), Africa (8.47%), South America (6.91%), and Oceania (1.57%). Boreal forests contained the largest portion of terrestrial surface water (25.03% of the global total), followed by the nominal ‘inland water’ biome (16.36%), tundra (15.67%), and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests (13.91%). Agreement with respect to the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer water mask and Landsat-based national land-cover datasets was very high, with commission errors <4% and omission errors <14% relative to each. Most of these were accounted for in the seasonality of water cover, snow and ice, and clouds – effects which were compounded by differences in image acquisition date relative to reference datasets. This is evidenced by the growing number of analyses and reviews of the effectiveness of habitats as natural defences and increasing funding world-wide for nature-based defences– i . e . restoration projects aimed at coastal protection; yet, there is no synthetic information on what kinds of projects are effective and cost effective for this purpose. This paper addresses two issues critical for designing restoration projects for coastal protection: (i) a synthesis of the costs and benefits of projects designed for coastal protection (nature-based defences) and (ii) analyses of the effectiveness of coastal habitats (natural defences) in reducing wave heights and the biophysical parameters that influence this effectiveness. We (i) analyse data from sixty-nine field measurements in coastal habitats globally and examine measures of effectiveness of mangroves, salt-marshes, coral reefs and seagrass/kelp beds for wave height reduction; (ii) synthesise the costs and coastal protection benefits of fifty-two nature-based defence projects and; (iii) estimate the benefits of each restoration project by combining information on restoration costs with data from nearby field measurements. The analyses of field measurements show that coastal habitats have significant potential for reducing wave heights that varies by habitat and site. In general, coral reefs and salt-marshes have the highest overall potential. Habitat effectiveness is influenced by: a) the ratios of wave height-to-water depth and habitat width-to-wavelength in coral reefs; and b) the ratio of vegetation height-to-water depth in salt-marshes. The comparison of costs of nature-based defence projects and engineering structures show that salt-marshes and mangroves can be two to five times cheaper than a submerged breakwater for wave heights up to half a metre and, within their limits, become more cost effective at greater depths. Ecosystem metabolism, chlorophyll a concentrations, and physical and chemical features were studied in the Santa Olalla lake from March 1998 to February 2000. Gross primary productivity (GPP) and community respiration (CR) were determined using a modification of the one-station diel oxygen change method. Chlorophyll a , Secchi depth, and total phosphorous and nitrogen reveal Santa Olalla to be a hypereutrophic system. Values of GPP and CR were very high (average 7.88 g O 2 m −2 d −1 and 8.52 g O 2 m −2 d −1 , respectively). Principal components analysis and a multiple regression model showed photosynthetically active radiation and soluble reactive phosphorus to be the main factors that control primary production in Santa Olalla. Also, the annual and interannual variation of water level in Santa Olalla seems to be an important factor that influences the ecological processes of this system. Mean net daily metabolism during a hydrologic period was not statistically different from 0 (0.008 g O 2 m −2 d −1 , p=0.99), and the average P/R ratio was not statistically different from 1 (1.164, p=0.343). These results suggest that the primary productivity was balanced with community respiration in Santa Olalla lake. The effect of an increase in the soil C-to-N ratio on the nitrogen dynamics in a Mediterranean shrubland was simulated by mixing with the litter layer wood shavings with a high C-to-N ratio. Samples of mineral soil, taken subsequently eight times during 404 d, were analyzed for total C, total N, total soil carbohydrates, potential net N mineralization, potential net nitrification and microbial biomass-N. We found significant increases in the concentration of total carbohydrates, C-to-N ratio and microbial biomass N in amended soils during the experiment, while potential net N mineralization rate and net nitrification rate significantly decreased; amounts of available nitrogen (NH4+–N+NO3–N) were unaffected by the amendment treatment. However, by the end of the experiment, no significant differences between amended and control soil samples were found. The total carbohydrates-to-K2SO4-extractable total-N ratio was the best predictor of both net mineralization rate and microbial biomass N, showing that the available C-to-available-N ratio is a better indicator of N dynamics than the total C to total N ratio. Here, we explore the potential of the new DEIMOS-1, multi-spectral, medium-resolution satellite sensor for quantifying TSS dynamics within the large, turbid Guadalquivir estuary (SW Iberian Peninsula). Eight scenes were atmospherically corrected using various image-based procedures (apparent reflectance; Dark Object Subtraction, DOS; and solar zenith angle approximation, COSTZ). In-situ measurements (100 to 1400 mg L− 1) from three campaigns coinciding (± 15 min) with satellite overpasses were used to assess the semi-analytical algorithm from Nechad et al. (2010) relating water-leaving reflectance (ρw) to TSS. All bands were very sensitive to TSS, however saturation of the visible wavelengths was observed at the highest sediment loads. The best correlation was obtained for the NIR band (755–906 nm) using the simple band-reflectance model at the top of atmosphere reflectance (ρw(TOA)), TSS (mg L− 1) = 21428.77 ρw(TOA) / (1 − ρw(TOA) / 0.21) − 346.17 (r2 = 0.864, p < 0.001, εr = 25.411%, n = 53), which was used to generate maps. This approach revealed detailed spatio-temporal variability in sediment concentrations within the river plume, near to shore and far up the river channel. The first coastal progradation occurred between 6900 and 4500 BP. The Doñana and (perhaps) La Algaida spits, both associated with the oldest and highest marshland in the Doñana National Park, are assumed to have been developed at an early stage. Originally, the Guadalquivir estuary was wider and deeper than now, and its environment was mainly marine. The oldest littoral formations have been dated as ca. 4735 BP. They show erosional events, and indicate the breaking-up of earlier spit-barriers to form inlets. The marine environment became increasingly dominant, with heavy erosion of cliffs and a retreating coastline. This period was followed by another sedimentary cycle (4200-2600 BP) that surrounded the earlier eroded barriers. The size of the estuary decreased due to the increasing marsh deposits, and a fluvial environment was born. About 2600 years ago, progradation gave way to a new period of intense erosion. The resulting morphology of littoral strands and erosional surfaces permitted the return to a marine environment. The shoreline again retreated. From 2300 BP, coastal progradation has prevailed, with an erosional interruption at 1000 BP. Yet, the C dynamics of wetlands and floodplains are poorly defined and field data is scarce. Air-water fluxes in the wetlands of Doñana Natural Area (SW Spain) were examined by measuring alkalinity, pH and other physiochemical parameters in a range of water bodies during 2010–2011. Areal fluxes were calculated and, using remote sensing, an estimate of the contribution of aquatic habitats to gaseous transport was derived. Semi-permanent ponds adjacent to the large Guadalquivir estuary acted as mild sinks, whilst temporal wetlands were strong sources of (−0.8 and 36.3 mmolCO2 m-2 d-1). Fluxes in semi-permanent streams and ponds changed seasonally; acting as sources in spring-winter and mild sinks in autumn (16.7 and −1.2 mmolCO2 m-2 d-1). Overall, Doñana's water bodies were a net annual source of (5.2 molC m-2 y-1). Up–scaling clarified the overwhelming contribution of seasonal flooding and allochthonous organic matter inputs in determining regional air-water gaseous transport (13.1 GgC y-1). Nevertheless, this estimate is about 6 times < local marsh net primary production, suggesting the system acts as an annual net sink. Initial indications suggest longer hydroperiods may favour autochthonous C capture by phytoplankton. In the study area of the shelf, thermodynamic control over fCO2 predominates from early May to late November, and this is opposite and similar in magnitude to the net biological effect. However, biological control over fCO2 predominates during winter. The results suggest that surface waters in the coastal area are under-saturated with respect to atmospheric CO2 during most of the year; therefore they represent a sink for atmospheric CO2 between November and May (− 1.0 mmol m− 2 day− 1), but a weak source in June (1.3 mmol m− 2 day− 1). The role of groundwater in the behavior of wetlands has usually been recognized in a general way, but there are still few studies on the hydrogeology of wetlands. The Doñana National Park (DNP) is probably the most important National Park in the European Community. It is located on the estuary of the Guadalquivir River. The functioning of the DNP's ecosystems is closely related to the geohydrology of the area. The aquifer system consists essentially of unconsolidated Plio-Quaternary materials covering an area of 2400 km2. Under the central marshy area (about 1800 km2) the aquifer system is confined below low-permeability estuary deposits. Around most of the marshland the aquifer crops out and is recharged by rainfall. The DNP has an area of 730 km2; part of it is in the marshland and part in the rechaarge area where the aquifer is phreatic. In the 1970s Spain's largest irrigation project using groundwater, covering a surface area of 240 km2, was planned in an area bordering the national park. The initial project has been scaled down to 100 km2, mainly as a result of protests by conservation groups. A review is presented of the various evaluations of the influence of groundwater extraction on the functioning of the wetlands. The authors consider that the water table decline as a result of pumpage for current irrigation could cause a large part of the ecotone—situated at the contact-line between the marshland and the phreatic aquifer—to deteriorate. This ecotone exists because it is a natural groundwater discharge area. The small streams feeding the marshland will also be depleted by groundwater extraction. Several shallow interdunal lakes in southwest Spain are in close hydraulic connection with the shallow ground water. Two permanent lakes and one intermittent lake have chloride concentrations that differ by almost an order of magnitude. A two-dimensional solute-transport model, modified to simulate transient groundwater-lake interaction, suggests that the rising water table during the wet season leads to local flow reversals toward the lakes. Response of the individual lakes, however, varies depending on the lake's position in the regional flow system. The most dilute lake is a flow-through lake during the entire year; the through flow is driven by regional groundwater flow. The other permanent lake, which has a higher solute concentration, undergoes seasonal groundwater flow reversals at its downgradient end, resulting in complex seepage patterns and higher solute concentrations in the ground water near the lake. The solute concentration of the intermittent lake is influenced more strongly by the seasonal wetting and drying cycle than by the regional flow system. Although evaporation is the major process affecting the concentration of conservative solutes in the lakes, geochemical and biochemical reactions influence the concentration of nonconservative solutes. Probable reactions in the lakes include biological uptake of solutes and calcite precipitation; probable reactions as lake water seeps into the aquifer are sulfate reduction and calcite dissolution. The present study examines the vegetation changes in the Naves, the driest area of the stabilized sands of Doñana National Park, and the processes responsible for them. The long-term vegetation changes showed a trend to more xerophytic communities over the last 30 yr due to a decrease in water availability. The age of the oldest pine trees growing in the bed of a dried pond suggest that the process started around 1973–1974. Among the possible reasons, the decline in water table level due to the pumping for urban water supply of a close tourist resort set up at the end of 1960s seem the most probable cause and, to a lesser degree, the transpiration of large pine plantations. The dynamics of the water table and the effects of groundwater abstraction are explained in terms of the geomorphologic structure of the area. The existence of a semi-permeable soil layer (fragipan) between two different superimposed dune episodes could separate a deeper, semi-confined layer from a superficial unconfined one.
