Surprisingly, to date little research has been devoted to the characterization of the gamer, based on general game motivations. By means of an online survey, we questioned 2985 Flemish gamers on 11 general game motivations. K-means clustering was used to distinguish four distinctive gamer profiles: the overall convinced gamer, the convinced competitive gamer, the escapist gamer and the pass-time gamer.",

"abstractNote": "Learning Management Systems are sophisticated web-based\napplications that are being engineered today in increasing\nnumbers by numerous institutions and companies that want to\nget involved in e-learning either for providing services to\nthird parties, or for educating and training their own\npeople. Even though the construction of such systems has\nbeen taking place for many years, they are still designed\nand developed from scratch. The reason is that experience\nfrom previous Learning Management Systems, is not codified\nor documented, resulting in forcing the development teams to\n‘re-invent the wheel’. This paper presents an approach of\nrecording design experience in the form of design patterns\nfor Learning Management Systems and aims at developing a\npattern language for these systems.",

"abstractNote": "Expanding deadlines and escalating costs have notoriously plagued the game industry. Although the majority of the game development costs are spent on art and animation, significant cost reductions and more importantly reductions in development time can be achieved when developers use off the shelf components rather than develop them from scratch. However, many game developers struggle with component integration and managing the complexity of their architectures. This paper gives an overview of developing games with components, presents a reference architecture that outlines the relevant areas of reuse and signifies some of the problems with developing components unique to the domain of games.",

"abstractNote": "Electronic games and simulations (eGames) are a valuable support for adaptive learning. This adaptation can be based on different inputs, such as the user's performance, behaviour or cognitive load. Both adaptation and eGames can be modelled with IMS Learning Design (IMS LD) or integrated from an external resource. In this article we show the relation between IMS LD and the <e-Adventure> Project when it comes to authoring adaptive Units of Learning (UoLs) integrated with eGames. We first describe the challenges of this objective and the several different solutions on authoring and integration. We also describe the content-centred authoring approach in <e-Adventure>, and the need for a communication service with IMS LD that makes a bidirectional influence on the user's adaptive learning experience. At the end, we describe a practical example that illustrates how an adaptive IMS LD UoL with an integrated <e-Adventure> eGame is developed.",

The motivational and immersive traits of game-based learning have been deeply studied in the literature, but the systematic design and implementation of educational games remain an elusive topic. In this study some relevant requirements for the design of educational games in online education are analyzed, and a general game design method that includes adaptation and assessment features is proposed. Finally, a particular implementation of that design is described in light of its applicability to other implementations and environments.",

Spend 15 seconds reading Clark Aldrich's The Complete Guide to Simulations and Serious Games. Witty, fast-paced, and non-linear--it's Spock meets Alton Brown.\" --Lynne Kenney, Psy.D., The Family CoachThe Complete Guide to Simulations and Serious GamesHow the Most Valuable Content Will Be Created in the Age Beyond Gutenberg to GoogleClark AldrichAuthor of Simulations and the Future of Learning and Learning by DoingPraise for The Complete Guide to Simulations and Serious Games\"Yes, this is an encyclopedic overview of the simulations and serious gaming world, but it's far more important than a 'how-to' book. Aldrich is signaling the end of the age of Gutenberg. Aldrich takes direct aim at why the K-12 and higher education system are failing--myopically trapped in a nineeenth-century world of 'learning to know' in a twenty-first century world that requires the judgment and skills of 'learning to do.' Aldrich's revolution transforms the way we learn.\"--Jeff Sandefer, founder, the Acton School of Business \"Clark Aldrich provides his clear vision of how 'learning to do' will liberate us from our industrial education legacy that has for too long been shaped by outdated, linear, passive instruction. I recommend this book without reservation for anyone interested in the future of learning.\"--Don Williams, manager, global learning research, Microsoft Corporation\"This exhaustive guide to computer gaming and simulation points the way to a new, more powerful way of learning by doing. It is a must-read--a must-read and study--for those involved in education and journalism.\"--Bill Kovach, former Washington bureau chief of the New York Times, and former editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution \"Aldrich has done it again. He provides an intuitive framework for those interested in (and perhaps overwhelmed by) simulations, games, and virtual worlds. Before you're halfway done with this book you'll be looking with a new perspective and set of competencies for creating interactive experiences.\"--Denis Saulnier, educational technology director, Harvard Business Publishing\"The Complete Guide sets the standard as the encyclopedia for serious games and simulations. In this comprehensive volume, Aldrich uses hundreds of examples for this new medium. If you want to stay at the forefront of education, this book is a must-have!\"--Jerry Bush, program manager, Learning@ Cisco",

"abstractNote": "Complex computer and video games may provide a vehicle, based on appropriate theoretical concepts, to transform the educational landscape. Building on the original game object model (GOM) a new more detailed model is developed to support concepts that educational computer games should: be relevant, explorative, emotive, engaging, and include complex challenges; support authentic learning activities that are designed as narrative social spaces where learners are transformed through exploration of multiple representation, and reflection; be gender-inclusive, include non-confrontational outcomes, and provide appropriate role models; develop democracy, and social capital through dialogue that is supported by means of computer mediated-communication tools; and include challenges, puzzles or quests, which form the core of the learning process, where access to explicit knowledge, conversations, and reflection results in the construction of tacit knowledge. It is argued that the GOM version II can be used not only to support the development of educational computer games but to provide a mechanism to evaluate the use of computer games in the classroom.",

"abstractNote": "Affect has been the subject of increasing attention in cognitive accounts of learning. Many intelligent tutoring systems now\nseek to adapt pedagogy to student affective and motivational processes in an effort to increase the effectiveness of tutorial\ninteraction and improve learning outcomes. To this end, recent work has begun to investigate the emotions experienced during\nlearning in a variety of environments. In this paper we extend this line of research by investigating the affective transitions\nthat occur throughout narrative-centered learning experiences. Further analysis differentiates the likelihood of affective\ntransitions stemming from pedagogical agent empathetic responses to student affect.",
