Connecting this distributed knowledge and enriching it with more data following a specific research question is a big challenge in digital humanities. The project Interlinking Pictura (IP) addresses this challenge by bridging Citizen Science with Open Educational Resources (OER). In order to achieve this objective, citizens are involved in a broad range of participatory levels of research. Besides the involvement of lay researchers (retired teachers, citizen associations etc.), IP adjusts the tasks to open educational resources for distributing and for an easy integration into learning environments. The IP project is built on semantic wiki platform and involves open linked data to enrich the corpus. This offers the possibility to realize the interoperability at multiple levels using standardized vocabularies. In IP the object of interest is the multilingual \"Bilderbuch für Kinder\" (illustrated book for children) by F. J. Bertuch (1790-1830), which is one of the earliest encyclopedias for children and a milestone in the development of educational resources. An open edition has been created using Semantic MediaWiki as a collaborative platform to facilitate citizens’ contribution. K.", "lastName": "Parrish" } ], "abstractNote": "The collective impact of humans on biodiversity rivals mass extinction events defining Earth’s history, but does our large population also present opportunities to document and contend with this crisis? We provide the first quantitative review of biodiversity-related citizen science to determine whether data collected by these projects can be, and are currently being, effectively used in biodiversity research. We find strong evidence of the potential of citizen science: within projects we sampled (n = 388), ∼1.3 million volunteers participate, contributing up to $2.5 billion in-kind annually. These projects exceed most federally-funded studies in spatial and temporal extent, and collectively they sample a breadth of taxonomic diversity. However, only 12% of the 388 projects surveyed obviously provide data to peer-reviewed scientific articles, despite the fact that a third of these projects have verifiable, standardized data that are accessible online. Factors influencing publication included project spatial scale and longevity and having publically available data, as well as one measure of scientific rigor (taxonomic identification training). Because of the low rate at which citizen science data reach publication, the large and growing citizen science movement is likely only realizing a small portion of its potential impact on the scientific research community. It consists of a collection of practices, tools and users generally found outside of traditional, authoritative GIS. GIS are computer applications that allow users to contribute geotagged data and to access and utilize geospatial data sets in combination with attribute information for a variety of purposes. This paper investigates questions of whether neogeography furthers the democratization of GIS and if increased access translates to empowerment or, conversely, to further marginalization. The research is interpretative and involves a literature review of the topic and a metasynthesis of recent qualitative research. Metasynthesis involves critical evaluation of data to identify an appropriate research sample and synthesis of findings by a compare-and-contrast exercise followed by reciprocal translation of each study into the other studies to reveal overarching metaphors. This is followed by conclusions and recommendations. The findings show that, depending on circumstances, neogeography can result in the democratization of GIS and geospatial data but may also constitute new methods of exclusion depending on technological and societal barriers. However, delineating the spatial extent of all RRRs regulated in legislation remains a challenge. Approaches that have been used so far are mainly based on accurate surveying processes, which are untimely and too expensive. Previous studies proposed Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) as a practical and low-cost method for fast acquisition of spatial data from volunteered contributions, mostly for countries where a limited number of land rights records exist. However, VGI could be beneficial for advanced and developing land administration systems in terms of collecting a range of RRRs which are not spatially well recorded and represented. A multidisciplinary review of the literature on VGI and land administration reveals the lack of a comprehensive conceptual framework for utilising VGI in land administration for the purpose of collecting a range of RRRs related to land and property. This paper investigates the main aspects of utilising VGI in land administration based on qualitative content analysis of available resources. The outcome of this research suggests that using VGI in land administration requires a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and interconnections of legal, institutional, technical and social aspects within each jurisdiction. These findings are merged to formulate a generic and innovative conceptual framework which serves as a basis for the process of collecting land and property RRRs from volunteer contributions. While many of these assessments rely on evaluation of individual participant knowledge and skill, they are driven by a broader interest in how such individual outcomes influence the form and function of science in society. Such a science-centered emphasis is neither surprising nor inappropriate. Nonetheless, such appraisals generally do not interrogate the full range of program goals and outcomes. This article advocates for greater comprehensive examination of the effects of PPSR participation on program volunteers. A more integrated perspective is therefore assumed to report on research conducted with volunteers in the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team citizen science program to interrogate the inter- and intrapersonal outcomes of program engagement through narrative interviews and focus groups. Findings highlight that while program participants value the data and research contributions they make, a suite of additional personal outcomes exist beyond these research inputs. Mothers are used to dealing with diarrhoea and have an ample repertoire of home-based practices, traditional treatments, and western-style medicine to manage diarrhoeal episodes. However, programme planners often overlook and/or underestimate this knowledge, and by so doing they constrain the possible impact of educational messages and intervention programmes designed to treat diarrhoea and to promote oral rehydration therapy. This study addresses the \"popular epidemiology\" of diarrhoea, in an effort to highlight data that may prove useful for planners of diarrhoea-management programmes. We found that when mothers assess the severity of diarrhoea they consider an increase in the usual number of stools passed per day, as well as the colour, smell and liquid content of the stools. However, they also place special consideration on how much the episode of diarrhoea interfered with their daily activities. When considering the worsening or improvement of their child during the episode, they rely on symptoms related to changes in the child's usual wellbeing, while the more important signs that they recognise are focused on the child's eyes. In both cases, citizen volunteers concerned with creating baseline databases for local watershed areas formed as a result of severe problems in local water quality and because of the lack of baseline data from which to assess these problems. Both view GIS as an important tool in improving their respective organizational capacities to respond to environmental quality problems once detected by citizen-volunteer monitoring and in contributing to environmental policy formation. One aspect of how GIS is being conceived of at Alabama Water Watch and Nucleo Pro Tiete is that the data used in both instances are obtained by citizen volunteers. In both cases, GIS is seen as a tool for organizing recently obtained water quality records from collection points in local watershed areas and integrating these records with other environmental factors. However, Nucleo Pro Tiete and Alabama Water Watch diverge in that the Brazilian GIS model incorporates perceived information about environmental quality objectives, whereas Alabama Water Watch seeks to develop GIS to augment the state's existing institutional water quality research and assessment efforts. L.", "lastName": "Slothower" } ], "abstractNote": "In the winter of 1993-94, house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) with severe conjunctivitis (later shown to be caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum) were first observed in suburban Washington D.C. (USA) and adjacent states. Using a large network of volunteer observers in eastern North America, we were able to track the monthly prevalence of the disease between November 1994 and March 1997. Using the information on 24,864 monthly data forms, we describe the very rapid spread of the conjunctivitis epidemic through the eastern house finch population. The epidemic first expanded mainly north, probably carried along by house finches on their return migration, then mainly toward the southeast, and. later west. By March 1997, conjunctivitis had been reported from most of the eastern range of the house finch. The prevalence of the disease seemed to fluctuate seasonally with increases in the fall, probably as a result of dispersing juveniles. Residents express concern about cancer risks due to contamination from a land-fill dump site and from radioactivity from previous mining activities. These concerns carry a range of meanings, not only regarding the threats to the physical place of Oceanpoint, but the social space the community occupies and the values they espouse. The perceptions of health risks in this location involve a contest over the cultural politics of place, the political economy of development and the sense of a former authentic 'community' that is being lost and disempowered from controlling its future.
