effectively respond to campus initiatives and user expectations, the University of\nKansas (KU) Libraries underwent a process of significant organizational review and transformation.\nGuided by a purposeful, open process, a diverse and representative group was elected to serve on\nthe Libraries Organizational Review Team (ORT) to assess the existing organizational structure,\ndetermine major functions and cross-functional areas therein, and identify new and vital activities\nand positions essential for achieving our strategic priorities. Recognizing, too, the trends and\nchallenges occurring within higher education and academic libraries, ORT sought to redefine\nprofessional roles and functions to strategically position the Libraries for the future.\nUtilizing peer institutional research, library literature and reports, and focus groups with each library\nunit, the team ultimately recommended a significant overhaul of the Libraries' organizational\nstructure. Broadly, the recommendation was for an adaptive and agile structure that is more\nresponsive to university priorities, technological developments, and resource constraints.\nSpecifically, ORT recommended a structure driven by contemporary user expectations and\nsupportive of new modes of scholarly communication, new pedagogical methods, and data\nmanagement. The recommended organizational design is fluid and user-focused with an emphasis\non integrating into the academic life of scholars and students.\nThis paper will report on the purposeful ‘grassroots’ approach undertaken by the team and its\ncreative processes of organizational review. Additionally, the authors will present ORT’s final\nrecommendations, as well as the rationale thereof. A survey was designed to investigate how VLEs are affecting the work of subject librarians and to examine factors influencing their use in providing electronic information resources and developing information skills. The aim of this paper is to document the results Design/methodology/approach - A questionnaire was distributed electronically to a purposive sample of 132 subject librarians at seven UK universities. The instrument contained mainly closed specified response questions with a few open questions and a response rate of 43 per cent (n=57) was achieved. Findings - Use of VLEs by subject librarians varies both between and within institutions. Factors affecting this include the subject area, co-operation of academic staff and attitudes of librarians towards technology-based teaching. JISC-funded projects have enabled better use of VLEs through the creation of re-usable learning objects and development of pedagogical understanding and skills. Recognition by academic staff of the teaching role of subject librarians has a critical impact on their involvement with VLEs. Research limitations/implications - The timeframe limited the scale of the study and size of the sample. The mainly quantitative approach limited the detail and depth of responses, but sufficient data were collected to establish broad trends, illuminate important factors and identify key issues. Methods: First, through a review of the literature, the history of subject librarians and related experts in university libraries of the United States was clarified. Second, in order to examine the current situation and working circumstances of subject librarians, the websites of some university libraries were checked. More specifically, lists of subject librarians were found on websites and analyzed to compare their roles between types or categories of university. Results: In the early days, subject librarians appeared in the United States to deploy the subject divisional plan and to promote area studies in universities. It became clear that the status of subject librarians had become well established by the 1960s as the task of selecting books shifted from faculty members to librarians, due to the postwar increase in the number of students and publications. The subject librarians usually were responsible for collection development, reference services, research consulting, library instruction, and liaison service. Since the 1980s, the selection of electronic resources, chat reference and so on were added as new tasks due to the appearance of the online environment and electronic resources.
