Greek syntax and terminology in Ezana's inscription point to an anti-Arian Christology which may be associated with Frumentius, first bishop of Aksum, and his connection with Athanasius of Alexandria. The inscription's trinitarian formula \"the power of the Father and Son and Holy Spirit\" is structured in such a way as to assert the identity of the three members of the Trinity. The phrase \"in the power of God Christ\" further equates Christ with God. This christological language stands in contrast to the Arian imperial policy of the time, and is historically significant in light of Constantius's attempt to force Frumentius's recall to Alexandria. Prior to the fourth century CE, the proper noun Aithiopía referred to the area of northern Sudan. Aksum, however, deliberately appropriated the Greek term for its own geopolitical purposes, partly as a way to write itself both into the grand narratives of Graeco-Roman history, where “Ethiopians” recurrently figure as morally “blameless,” as well as—with their conversion to Christianity—into Old and New Testamental eschatologies that consistently position “Ethiopians” as first in the sight of God. This process of self-definition—achieved under the formative gaze of Hellenic, Roman, and Levantine Others—ultimately allowed ‘Ityoyā to become a key, if nonetheless still liminal and rogue, player in Mark Aldenderfer (archaeology in the Andes and Himalayas), Elizabeth DeMarrais (archaeology in highland Americas), and others like David Berresford Jones (Peru).  The Americas are the main \"highland\" area that has been studied the most.

Themes such as trade, interaction, and marginal societies (in relation to highlands) really started to be looked at in archaeology in the 1970s (people like Kent Flannery). These days, most archaeologists tend to focus on the environmental aspects of highland societies, and many of these are prehistorians (e.g. Brian Stewart palaeolithic South Africa, Richard Tipping in the Scottish highlands).  For work on more socio-cultural or topics I suspect there are more social anthropologists working on this than archaeologists.

Evidence from the Sondondo Valley suggests that the Wari Empire manipulated local belief systems in order to express its power and legitimate its domination. Wari imperial ideology was expressed through an iconography of power and an imposing style of architecture. Local belief systems can be reconstructed through the use of modern and historic observations combined with archaeological remains, and I identify one and possibly two major shrines that were in use during the Middle Horizon. Among the sites established by the Wari in the Sondondo Valley was Leqles Pata, located in proximity to local shrines in such a way as to exert control over their access and experiential nature. It is not unlikely that Wari strategies of ideological control were tailored to each region, much as were their economic and political reforms. The use of local belief systems as a form of resistance cannot be seen clearly in the case of the Wari occupation, but I cite the Taki Onqoy movement as an example of 16th-century resistance by the people of Sondondo against the Spanish.
