"abstractNote": "Henry Jenkins at Authors@Google (video)Winner of the 2007 Society for Cinema and Media Studies Katherine Singer Kovacs Book Award2007 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Convergence Culture maps a new territory: where old and new media intersect, where grassroots and corporate media collide, where the power of the media producer and the power of the consumer interact in unpredictable ways.Henry Jenkins, one of America’s most respected media analysts, delves beneath the new media hype to uncover the important cultural transformations that are taking place as media converge. He takes us into the secret world of Survivor Spoilers, where avid internet users pool their knowledge to unearth the show’s secrets before they are revealed on the air. He introduces us to young Harry Potter fans who are writing their own Hogwarts tales while executives at Warner Brothers struggle for control of their franchise. He shows us how The Matrix has pushed transmedia storytelling to new levels, creating a fictional world where consumers track down bits of the story across multiple media channels.Jenkins argues that struggles over convergence will redefine the face of American popular culture. Industry leaders see opportunities to direct content across many channels to increase revenue and broaden markets. At the same time, consumers envision a liberated public sphere, free of network controls, in a decentralized media environment. Sometimes corporate and grassroots efforts reinforce each other, creating closer, more rewarding relations between media producers and consumers. Sometimes these two forces are at war.Jenkins provides a riveting introduction to the world where every story gets told and every brand gets sold across multiple media platforms. He explains the cultural shift that is occurring as consumers fight for control across disparate channels, changing the way we do business, elect our leaders, and educate our children.",

"abstractNote": "A revelatory examination of how the wildfirelike spread of new forms of social interaction enabled by technology is changing the way humans form groups and exist within them, with profound long-term economic and social effects-for good and for ill A handful of kite hobbyists scattered around the world find each other online and collaborate on the most radical improvement in kite design in decades. A midwestern professor of Middle Eastern history starts a blog after 9/11 that becomes essential reading for journalists covering the Iraq war. Activists use the Internet and e-mail to bring offensive comments made by Trent Lott and Don Imus to a wide public and hound them from their positions. A few people find that a world-class online encyclopedia created entirely by volunteers and open for editing by anyone, a wiki, is not an impractical idea. Jihadi groups trade inspiration and instruction and showcase terrorist atrocities to the world, entirely online. A wide group of unrelated people swarms to a Web site about the theft of a cell phone and ultimately goads the New York City police to take action, leading to the culprit's arrest. With accelerating velocity, our age's new technologies of social networking are evolving, and evolving us, into new groups doing new things in new ways, and old and new groups alike doing the old things better and more easily. You don't have to have a MySpace page to know that the times they are a changin'. Hierarchical structures that exist to manage the work of groups are seeing their raisons d'Âtre swiftly eroded by the rising technological tide. Business models are being destroyed, transformed, born at dizzying speeds, and the larger social impact is profound. One of the culture's wisest observers of the transformational power of the new forms of tech-enabled social interaction is Clay Shirky, and Here Comes Everybody is his marvelous reckoning with the ramifications of all this on what we do and who we are. Like Lawrence Lessig on the effect of new technology on regimes of cultural creation, Shirky's assessment of the impact of new technology on the nature and use of groups is marvelously broad minded, lucid, and penetrating; it integrates the views of a number of other thinkers across a broad range of disciplines with his own pioneering work to provide a holistic framework for understanding the opportunities and the threats to the existing order that these new, spontaneous networks of social interaction represent. Wikinomics, yes, but also wikigovernment, wikiculture, wikievery imaginable interest group, including the far from savory. A revolution in social organization has commenced, and Clay Shirky is its brilliant chronicler.",

By drawing\nattention to this grammatical oversight, we will review non-fiction transmedia literature, highlight the\nsuccess of GoBacktoWhere You Came From(O’Mahoney, Australia, 2011) and provide a detailed analysis\nof the production of the The Living History of Fort Scratchley project (DVD documentary, i-doc, website,\nbooklet, 2004–2008) against Henry Jenkins’ seven transmedia principles (2009b). This detailed analysis\napplies transmedia ‘fiction’ criteria to ‘non-fiction’, challenging transmedia’s explicit reference to fictional\nstory universes.",

In the first section, the article presents the basic compo- nents of transmedia storytelling from a theoretical point of view that combines narratology and semiotics. After describing the most important components of Lost's transmedia fictional universe in the second section, the article presents a general description and taxonomy of expansion/compression narrative strategies based on traditional rhetorical categories. The article also analyzes \"compressed texts\" - like recapitulations - and their role inside the expansive strategies.",

The essay both shares the syllabus as a resource for other teachers and reflects on the challenges of teaching such cutting edge content.",

"abstractNote": "A common dilemma faces today's news editors who must decide whether to devote time and resources to the production of interactive graphics for their websites. Are interactive graphics an important storytelling tool? Are they cost-effective in this digital age? This study finds that while editors value interactive graphics, few newspapers devote prime website real estate to graphics, making it difficult to assess their worth. The authors also use the results of a national survey, a content analysis, and personal interviews to determine the frequency with which graphics are produced and to identify the barriers to their production. Interactive graphics, once the “next hot thing” in multimedia content, now compete for time and attention with social media, news curation, and apps development projects. Directions for future research are also discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Over the last 10 years, radio listeners have increasingly begun to tune in online – via podcasts, radio-on-demand and other digital distribution platforms. In the last couple of years, they have begun to interact with radio in theatres, cinemas and assorted make-shift gig venues, via mobile apps and social media platforms, and in the form of live performances, online videos, maps, tweets, blogs, forums, essays, photographs and interactive websites. Radio, like every other medium, is experimenting with ever more complex cross-media practices. These kinds of activities have been analysed at length with regard to commercial film, television and gaming, but much less is understood about radio-born approaches to transmedia content. This article considers how existing transmedia theories can contribute to our understanding of these new radio practices and also how radio-originated cross-media productions might challenge some of the ingrained assumptions we have about transmedia engagement.",

"abstractNote": "This article explores an alternative understanding of storytelling, which has risen with the emergence of new forms of narrative media, particularly with the medium of computer games. I explicate the distinctive logic behind this novel understand- ing and investigate how this logic differs from prior conceptualizations of narrative. In the past decades, marginal formats such as the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book and experimental practices like Experience Theatre already tested the concept of narrative as developed once in structuralist narratology. Narrative experiments like these have now become mainstream, story-driven computer games being one of the prime examples. Drawing on recent theories on the distinction between representation and presentation from the fields of media studies and the arts, this article explains the limits of a structuralist approach, and, in the process, develops an additional concept of narrative, more suited for studying the popular story-driven games of today.",

Using computational discourse analysis, we examine news values and the form of news exhibited in #egypt from January 25 to February 25, 2011, pre- and post-resignation of Hosni Mubarak. Results point to a hybridity of old and newer news values, with emphasis on the drama of instantaneity, the crowdsourcing of elites, solidarity, and ambience. The resulting stream of news combines news, opinion, and emotion to the point where discerning one from the other is difficult and doing so misses the point. We offer a theory of affective news to explain the distinctive character of content produced by networked publics in times of political crisis.",

Planned events are temporal occurrences that are normally well schematized and publicized in advance. The proposed model addresses the fundamental features involved in transmedia strategies for media coverage to contribute to scho- lars’ analytic needs and to guide journalists in developing transmedia strategies in the context of the news coverage of planned events. Multiplatform news media production is already a reality that, although probably more modest than comprehensive, will inevitably grow and improve.",

"abstractNote": "Digital technology holds the potential to transform journalism and the media in several beneficial ways, including new forms of storytelling that might better engage citizens and provide more context, nuance, and texture to reported events and issues. However, the extent to which these benefits have been realized is mixed and subject to debate. In this monograph, we examine how digital technology might transform the content of journalism through augmented reality (AR). The significance of digital storytelling through AR is manifest in its potential to engage a citizenry increasingly disengaged from traditional news and to provide more contextualized information.",

"abstractNote": "Technological convergence and altered dynamics of content circulation, what is here referred to as “transmedia textures”, change the ways in which news is consumed. This is in regard to both how individuals navigate and orient themselves through representational spaces and flows, and how their media practices amalgamate with other activities in everyday life. The aim of this study is to explore how altered dynamics of amalgamation are related to various news media orientations and how these relationships correspond to forces of structuration. The study applies a communication geographical analytical framework and combines quantitative and qualitative interview data from Sweden. The empirical data illustrate how the spatial practice of news consumption changes into an increasingly amalgamated, mobile practice. Transmedia textures flourish within geo-social settings marked by relatively affluent, mobile lifestyles and cosmopolitan news orientations. However, it is also shown that transmedia textures, due to the forces of geo- social structuration, sustain sedentary lifestyles, corresponding to more locally oriented news media practices.",

This article will discuss the opportunities that have been opened up for writers and producers of radio drama through the development of online and downloadable audio. It will discuss the use of both social media tools and diverse media platforms in a construction of story in which the membrane between the real and fictive has become permeable. It will focus on the author’s ongoing work on The Flickerman, a piece of applied creative research that began as an attempt to explore the possibilities offered to writers by working outside conventional radio networks, and has developed into a piece of as-live, collaborative, open-source storytelling.",
